Sunday Pekah and Rezin attack Jerusalem Bible Reading: 2 Kings 16v1-5; Isaiah 7v1-9 (cp. 2 Chronicles 28v1-4) As you read Isaiah 7, remember that Ephraim means the northern kingdom called Israel. 1. Who was the new king of Judah? (2 Kings 16v1) See chart of kings 2. What sort of king was he? (v2+3) 3. What did he do? (v3+4) 4. Who came to war with him? (v5) Find Syria and Israel on a map 5. Where did they besiege? (v5) Find it on a map 6. Did they win? (v5) 7. Who went to meet Ahaz? (Isaiah 7v3) 8. Where? (v3) 9. What was Ahaz NOT to do? (v4) 10. What did Isaiah call Rezin and Pekah?(v4) 11. What would NOT happen? (v6+7) The Bible doesn t say who the son of Tabeal was. But he was important enough to be a king 12. What would happen to Ephraim? (v8) 13. What if Ahaz wouldn t believe? (v9) Ahaz wasn t a good king. He didn t deserve God to be loving and kind to him. But the LORD was giving Ahaz the chance to trust Him. Then, the LORD would give him a strong kingdom. But Ahaz chose NOT to believe Him. You don t deserve God s mercy. But the Lord wants you to trust Him and be strong. MEANINGS: Abominations = things that God really, really hates; Heathen = people who worship false gods; Incense = spice burned to give nice smell; Prevail = win; Overcome = defeat; Confederate = united to fight; Conduit = water channel; Fuller = man who bleaches and cleans cloth; Take heed = be careful; Firebrands = burning stick; Counsel = advice; Vex = trouble; Breach = hole in the wall; Midst = middle; Threescore and five = 65; Established = set up That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. Answers 1) Ahaz; 2) Evil like the kings of Israel; 3) Made his son pass through fire like the heathen, sacrificed and burned incense in high places to idols; 4) Rezin king of Syria and Pekah king of Israel; 5) Jerusalem; 6) No; 7) Isaiah and Shear-jashub; 8) Condit of upper pool near fuller s field; 9) Fear or be fainthearted; 10) Tails of smoking firebrands; 11) Syria and Israel wouldn t take Judah or make the son of Tabeal king over it; 12) Within 65 years would be broken that it wouldn t be a people; 13) He wouldn t be established Did you know? Child sacrifices were made to Molech. He was an Ammonite god (1 Kings 11v7). This was done at Topheth in the valley of Hinnom (2 Kings 23v10). Find it on a map A metal statue of Moelech was heated red hot. A little child was put in Molech s arms...and burned to death. It was an abomination to the LORD. That means that the LORD really, really hated it The prophets Isaiah, Micah and Hosea prophesied at this time (Isaiah 1v1; Micah1v1; Hosea 1v1). We learnt a bit about them last week. (Leviticus 18v21; Deuteronomy 12v31). Often the firstborn children were sacrificed. Micah spoke against child sacrifice (Micah 6v7). King Ahaz sacrificed his son (2 Kings 16v3). Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? (Isaiah 7v13)

Genealogy of Kings

Monday Oded and the captives Bible Reading: 2 Chronicles 28v5-15 1. What did the LORD do? (v5) 2. Where were the captives brought to? (v5) Find it on a map 3. Who did Pekah s army kill? (v6) 4. Why? (v6) 5. Who did Zichri kill? (v7) Maaisah was a son of king Ahaz of Judah. Azrikam was governor over the king s house. Elkanah was next to the king in the land...bit like a prime minister. 6. What did Israel do? (v8) Find it on a map Judah and Israel are called brethren (brothers). They were all descended from the Israelites who came out of Egypt. 7. What did Oded say to do? (v9-11) Israelites weren t meant to keep other Israelites to be slaves (Leviticus 25v39). 8. Why? (v11) 9. Who wouldn t allow the captives into Samaria? (v12) 10. Why? (v13) 11. What did they do for the captives? (v15) 12. Where did they bring them to? (v15) Find it on a map God had His man in the right place at the right time. Oded was God's man with God's message. He wasn t afraid to speak out for the LORD. Never be afraid to speak out for God. But ask the Lord to put you in the right place at the right time...and to show you what to say. MEANINGS: Smote = defeated; Multitude = very big crowd; Captives = prisoners; Slaughter = great killing; Valiant = brave for battle; Forsaken = left; Host = army; Slew, slain = killed; Delivered = gave them up to; Purpose = plan to do; Bondmen = slaves; Wroth = angry; Hither = here; Offended = sinned against; Intend = mean to do something; Trespass = sin; Congregation = gathering of people; Expressed by name = named (in v12); Arrayed = clothed; Shod = put shoes on; Anointed = poured oil on them to help heal their wounds; Feeble = weak; Asses = donkeys

Answers 1) Delivered Ahaz and Judah to Syria; 2) Damascus; 3) 120 000 valiant men of Judah; 4) They had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers; 5) Maaseiah, Azrikam, and Elkanah; 6) Took 200 000 captives from Judah as well as much spoil to Samaria; 7) Don t keep the captives from Judah to be slaves, let them do; 8) The fierce wrath of God is upon Israel; 9) Some head men of Ephraim, Azariah, Berechiah, Jehizkiah, and Amasa; 10) The LORD was angry because Israel had already sinned against HIM, and they would be adding more sin to make the LORD more angry; 11) Clothed and shod them, gave them to eat and drink, and anointed them; 12) Jericho The prophet Oded prophesied in Samaria at this time. The Bible doesn t say anything else about him. Did you know? Jericho was the first city Joshua and the Israelites conquered after crossing Jordan (Joshua 6). Joshua put a curse on the man who would rebuild it. His oldest child would die when he laid the foundation. His youngest son would die Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? (Romans 2v4) when he finished putting on the gates. This really did happen...many years later (Joshua 6v26; 1 Kings 16v34). Jericho was known as the city of palm trees.

Tuesday Ahaz gets help from Assyria Bible Reading: 2 Kings 16v6-9; 2 Chronicles 28v16-21 1. What city did Syria take from Judah? (2 Kings 16v6) Find it on a map 2. Who did Ahaz ask to help him? (v7) Find Assyria on a map 3. What did Ahaz call himself? (v7) 4. How did Ahaz pay him? (v8) 5. What did the Assyrians do? (v9) Kir is also called Der. Find it on a map 6. What had the Edomites done? (2 Chronicles 28v17) Find it on a map 7. What had Philistines done? (v18) 8. Why was the LORD bringing Judah low? (v19) 9. What did the king of Assyria do? (v20) 10. What did he NOT do? (v20+21) 11. What had Ahaz given him? (v21) Assyria was the world power then...conquering the countries around. So, the king of Assyria was really looking out for himself...not Ahaz and Judah! And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. (Matthew 23v12) The LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz s sin (v19). Refusing to go God s way will cost you much. Humble yourself before the LORD and obey Him OR He will bring you down and punish you. Remember, the more you lift yourself up against God, the harder your fall will be! MEANINGS: Recovered = took back; Drave = drove out; Dwelt = lived; Messengers = people who brought messages; Hearkened = listened to; Captive = prisoner; Slew = killed; Smitten = attacked; Invaded = went into a country with army to attack it; Transgressed = broke God s law; Sore distressed = greatly troubled Answers 1) Elath; 2) Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria; 3) Tiglathpileser s servant and son; 4) Silver and gold from the LORD s temple and treasures from the king s house; 5) Took Damascus, killed Rezin and carried people captive to Kir; 6) Attacked Judah and taken captives; 7) Invaded south Judah and taken Beth-shemesh, Ajalon, Gederoth, Shocho, Timnah, and Gimzo; 8) Because king Ahaz led the people of Judah to sin against the LORD; 9) Distressed (troubled) Ahaz; 10) Strengthen or help Ahaz; 11) Took part of the treasures from the LORD s house, the king s house and of the princes

Map showing Philistine attacks Map showing Kir (Der) Stop and Think! Ahaz took silver and gold from the LORD s temple to pay the king of Assyria. Be careful. It s so easy to keep God s money for things we want...instead of giving it to God s work.

Wednesday Ahaz s idolatry Bible Reading: 2 Kings 16v10-20; 2 Chronicles 28v22-27 Ahaz was king of Judah. Tiglathpileser was king of Assyria. 1. Where did Ahaz meet Tiglathpileser? (2 Kings 16v10) Find it on a map 2. What did Ahaz send to Urijah? (v10) 3. When did Urijah have the altar ready? (v11) 4. What did Ahaz sacrifice on it? (v12+13) 5. Where did he take the brazen altar from? (v14) 6. What was it used for? (v15) 7. What was Urijah to do with the great altar? (v15) The great altar was the altar Urijah made. 8. Why did he sacrifice to the gods of Damascus? (2 Chronicles 28v23) 9. What was the ruin of him? (v23) 10. What did he do with the temple vessels? (v24) 11. What did he do with the temple? (v24) 12. What did he make in Jerusalem and Judah? (v24+25) 13. Who did he make angry? (v25) Idol worship is breaking God s 1st and 2nd commandments (Exodus 20v3-6). When you re struggling...don t make things worse by worshipping your own way. The altar is a picture of the cross of Christ. Make sure Christ is the centre of your worship... and the centre of your life. MEANINGS: Fashion = design; Made it against = made it before; Approached = went near; Forefront = out in front; Enquire = ask; Covert = covering, shelter; Trespass = sin; Smote = defeated; Ruin = be destroyed; Vessels = containers; Several city = every city; High places = places where gods were worshipped; Incense = spice burned to give nice smell; Provoked = made angry I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. (Isaiah 42v8)

Answers 1) Damascus; 2) Pattern of an altar he saw at Damascus; 3) Before king Ahaz came from Damascus; 4) His burnt offering, his meat offering, his drink offering and blood of his peace offering; 5) The temple of the LORD; 6) For Ahaz to enquire by; 7) Morning burnt offering, evening meat offering, king s burnt sacrifice and his meat offering, and the burnt, meat and drink offerings of all the people; 8) That they would help him; 9) The gods of Damascus; 10) Cut them in pieces; 11) Shut it up; 12) Altars in Jerusalem, and high places in every city of Judah to burn incense to other gods; 13) The LORD God Ahaz was wrong to use the great altar he made. The LORD wanted the burnt offerings made on the brazen altar (Exodus 38v1). The brazen altar was used every day for animal sacrifices. People came to worship God. They brought living animals. The priests killed the animals. Their blood was shed. This is a picture of the Messiah Christ. He shed His blood for us on the cross at Calvary (Romans 5v8; Ephesians 1v7).

Thursday Israel carried captive to Assyria Bible Reading: 2 Kings 17v1-14 (cp. 2 Kings 15v29; 18v9-12) 1. Who was the new king of Israel? (v1) 2. What sort of king was he? (v2) 3. Who came to fight against him? (v3) Shalmaneser was the son of Tiglath-pileser. 4. Why was Hoshea put in prison? (v4) Hoshea plotted. He d get So king of Egypt to help him. He d pay no more yearly tax to Assyria. 5. How long was Samaria besieged? (v5) 6. Where was Israel carried captive to? (v6) Find these places on a map 7. Why? (v7+8) 8. How did the LORD feel? (v11) 9. Why? (v10-12) 10. Who would they NOT listen to? (v13+14) 11. What had they transgressed? (18v12) The LORD had chosen Israel to be His special people. They were to worship only HIM (Exodus 20; Deuteronomy 6v6v1-6). Sadly, they chose to worship many gods. They wouldn t listen to God s prophets. Listen to God s warnings. He s giving you time to turn from your sin. It s your day of grace. But keep saying, No to HIM... and you ll die in your sins. Then, it will be forever too late. So, be careful not to sin away your day of grace. (Hosea 14v9) Stop and Think! Some people say that these 10 northern tribes were lost...and they eventually ended up in Britain. BUT that s not what the Bible teaches. Some people from these 10 tribes were living in Judah. Many years before this Jeroboam 1 st had set up idol worship. Those who loved the LORD went to live in Judah (2 Chronicles 11v14-17). Those who went into captivity were not lost. Some of them did mix in with Assyrian ways. But others still kept being known as Israelites.

Friday The Samaritans Bible Reading: 2 Kings 17v15-28 1. What did Israel reject? (v15) 2. What did they worship? (v16) 3. How did they make the LORD angry? (Psalm 62v11) The Samaritans were in God s land...the Holy Land. But they didn t worship the One True Living HOLY GOD. So, the LORD sent lions stop them. What is your lion? They let the devil have a foot-hold in your life. And they may cause you many problems in your life, too!

Did you know? The Jews didn t like the Samaritans in their land. They didn t like to have anything to do with them. This was still the same when Jesus was living on earth. The woman at the well was a Samaritan. She knew that the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. She knew that Succoth-benoth was a god from Babylon. Nergal was a god from Cuthah. the Samaritans and Jews worshipped differently (John 4v9+20). Ashima was a god from Hamath. Nibhaz and Tartak were gods from Ava. Adrammelech and Anammelech were gods from Sepharvaim. Find these places on a map
