Truth Life and Love Are Our Substance February 3, 2016 Hymns 58, 131, 19 The Bible Job 33:4 The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. Isa. 2:22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of? John 6:53 (to said), 63 Then Jesus said It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 14:6 I I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 6:57 (to 1st,), 57 I (to :) As the living Father hath sent me, I live by the Father: Matt. 17:1-9 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. John 8:28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. I Cor. 2:9 Eye, 10, 12-14 Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth;
comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. I John 2:15, 17, 24, 25 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. Rom. 12:1 (to 2nd,), 2 1st be I beseech you therefore, brethren, be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. John 4:23 1st the, 24 The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. I Cor. 6:20 therefore Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God s. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy SH 492:3-6 For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence. In reality there is no other existence, since Life cannot be united to its unlikeness, mortality. SH 124:25-26 (to 1st.) Spirit is the life, substance, and continuity of all things. SH 173:12-13 (to 1st.) Neither the substance nor the manifestation of Spirit is obtainable through matter. SH 468:16, 18-22 Question. What is substance? Truth, Life, and Love are substance, as the Scriptures use this word in Hebrews: The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance. SH 94:1-6 Jesus taught but one God, one Spirit, who makes man in the image and likeness of Himself, of Spirit, not of matter. Man reflects infinite Truth, Life, and Love. The nature of man, thus understood, includes all that is implied by the terms image and likeness as used in Scripture. SH 284:11-12 (to 1st?), 16-20
Is God s image or likeness matter, or a mortal, sin, sickness, and death? Can the material senses, which receive no direct evidence of Spirit, give correct testimony as to spiritual life, truth, and love? The answer to all these questions must forever be in the negative. SH 27:10-16 That Life is God, Jesus proved by his reappearance after the crucifixion in strict accordance with his scientific statement: Destroy this temple [body], and in three days I [Spirit] will raise it up. It is as if he had said: The I the Life, substance, and intelligence of the universe is not in matter to be destroyed. SH 34:18 Through all the disciples experienced, they became more spiritual and understood better what the Master had taught. His resurrection was also their resurrection. It helped them to raise themselves and others from spiritual dulness and blind belief in God into the perception of infinite possibilities. They needed this quickening, for soon their dear Master would rise again in the spiritual realm of reality, and ascend far above their apprehension. As the reward for his faithfulness, he would disappear to material sense in that change which has since been called the ascension. SH 314:23-24 Because of mortals material and sinful belief, the spiritual Jesus was imperceptible to them. SH 314:19 This materialism lost sight of the true Jesus; but the faithful Mary saw him, and he presented to her, more than ever before, the true idea of Life and substance. SH 97:29-32 Christianity is again demonstrating the Life that is Truth, and the Truth that is Life, by the apostolic work of casting out error and healing the sick. SH 471:23 The The author subscribed to an orthodox creed in early youth, and tried to adhere to it until she caught the first gleam of that which interprets God as above mortal sense. This view rebuked human beliefs, and gave the spiritual import, expressed through Science, of all that proceeds from the divine Mind. Since then her highest creed has been divine Science, which, reduced to human apprehension, she has named Christian Science. This Science teaches man that God is the only Life, and that this Life is Truth and Love; that God is to be understood, adored, and demonstrated; that divine Truth casts out suppositional error and heals the sick. SH 162:22-25 I have restored what is called the lost substance of lungs, and healthy organizations have been established where disease was organic. SH 184:27 A woman, whom I cured of consumption, always breathed with great difficulty when the wind was from the east. I sat silently by her side a few moments. Her breath came gently. The inspirations were deep and natural. I then requested her to look at the weather-vane. She looked and saw that it
pointed due east. The wind had not changed, but her thought of it had and so her difficulty in breathing had gone. The wind had not produced the difficulty. My metaphysical treatment changed the action of her belief on the lungs, and she never suffered again from east winds, but was restored to health. SH 349:31 In Christian Science, substance is understood to be Spirit, while the opponents of Christian Science believe substance to be matter. They think of matter as something and almost the only thing, and of the things which pertain to Spirit as next to nothing, or as very far removed from daily experience. Christian Science takes exactly the opposite view. SH 311:26-28; 312:1 The objects cognized by the physical senses have not the reality of substance. They are only what mortal belief calls them. How true it is that whatever is learned through material sense must be lost because such so-called knowledge is reversed by the spiritual facts of being in Science. That which material sense calls intangible, is found to be substance. What to material sense seems substance, becomes nothingness, as the sense-dream vanishes and reality appears. SH 91:5-21 Let us rid ourselves of the belief that man is separated from God, and obey only the divine Principle, Life and Love. Here is the great point of departure for all true spiritual growth. It is difficult for the sinner to accept divine Science, because Science exposes his nothingness; but the sooner error is reduced to its native nothingness, the sooner man s great reality will appear and his genuine being will be understood. The destruction of error is by no means the destruction of Truth or Life, but is the acknowledgment of them. Absorbed in material selfhood we discern and reflect but faintly the substance of Life or Mind. The denial of material selfhood aids the discernment of man s spiritual and eternal individuality, and destroys the erroneous knowledge gained from matter or through what are termed the material senses. SH 285:2-3 Man s individuality is not material. SH 172:18-22 On the contrary, man is the image and likeness of Spirit; and the belief that there is Soul in sense or Life in matter obtains in mortals, alias mortal mind, to which the apostle refers when he says that we must put off the old man. SH 519:14-16 Mortals can never know the infinite, until they throw off the old man and reach the spiritual image and likeness. SH 3:12-16 The Divine Being must be reflected by man, else man is not the image and likeness of the patient, tender, and true, the One altogether lovely; but to
understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire. SH 330:11-15 God God is infinite, the only Life, substance, Spirit, or Soul, the only intelligence of the universe, including man. Eye hath neither seen God nor His image and likeness. Neither God nor the perfect man can be discerned by the material senses. SH 335:12-15 Spirit is the only substance, the invisible and indivisible infinite God. Things spiritual and eternal are substantial. Things material and temporal are insubstantial. SH 330:19-20 God God is what the Scriptures declare Him to be, Life, Truth, Love. SH 29:30-32 Man as the offspring of God, as the idea of Spirit, is the immortal evidence that Spirit is harmonious and man eternal. SH 427:14-16 Nothing can interfere with the harmony of being nor end the existence of man in Science. SH 467:3-7 The The first demand of this Science is, Thou shalt have no other gods before me. This me is Spirit. Therefore the command means this: Thou shalt have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no truth, no love, but that which is spiritual. SH 489:13-18, 24-28 Corporeal sense defrauds and lies; it breaks all the commands of the Mosaic Decalogue to meet its own demands. How then can this sense be the Godgiven channel to man of divine blessings or understanding? How can man, reflecting God, be dependent on material means for knowing, hearing, seeing? The corporeal senses are the only source of evil or error. Christian Science shows them to be false, because matter has no sensation, and no organic construction can give it hearing and sight nor make it the medium of Mind. SH 63:5-6, 9 In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being. SH 264:10-12 We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being. SH 361:18-20 The Scripture reads: For in Him we live, and move, and have our being. SH 410:1-7, 9-12 (to ;) If here we give no heed to Christian Science, which is spiritual and eternal, we shall not be ready for spiritual Life hereafter.
This is life eternal, says Jesus, is, not shall be; and then he defines everlasting life as a present knowledge of his Father and of himself, the knowledge of Love, Truth, and Life. The Scriptures say, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God, showing that Truth is the actual life of man; SH 267:1-5 (to 1st.) Every object in material thought will be destroyed, but the spiritual idea, whose substance is in Mind, is eternal. The offspring of God start not from matter or ephemeral dust. They are in and of Spirit, divine Mind, and so forever continue. SH 278:14-16 Hence, as we approach Spirit and Truth, we lose the consciousness of matter. SH 292:31 In his resurrection and ascension, Jesus showed that a mortal man is not the real essence of manhood, and that this unreal material mortality disappears in presence of the reality. SH 516:4-8 The substance, Life, intelligence, Truth, and Love, which constitute Deity, are reflected by His creation; and when we subordinate the false testimony of the corporeal senses to the facts of Science, we shall see this true likeness and reflection everywhere.
