If your family has chosen to baptize your child at St. Jude Catholic Church, but is registered at another parish, you must obtain a Sacramental Release from your parish. 2) Parents must attend a Baptism Preparation session, held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm. (If the first Tuesday is a holiday, the session will be held on the second Tuesday of that month.) If at all possible Godparents are also highly encouraged to attend. Baptisms will be celebrated on the last Saturday of the month AFTER the 5pm Mass (unless otherwise specified). Thank you for entrusting your wonderful child/children to us. We are here to support you in your role as the primary educator of your child/children. Together we will help them to follow in the footsteps of Jesus to become loving, compassionate Christians, concerned about others and vibrant members of a Catholic faith community. The Diocese of Honolulu has stated that preparation for First Communion must take 2 years which means your child/ren must attend grade one. If not your child/ren will be placed in a pre First Communion class and will not receive the sacrament until the two years are completed. This handbook includes procedures and other pertinent information regarding our Religious Education programs. Please take a few minutes to review this information with your child/children. It is meant to provide you, the parents/guardians, with helpful information on how we intend to go about our mission in serving you and your children. St. Jude Catholic Church Religious Education Department reserves the right to amend this handbook as necessary in accordance with the Diocese of Honolulu Office of Religious Education. You will be notified in writing if changes are made to any information, policy or procedure contained in this handbook. Please review this booklet as it contains pertinent information regarding our programs and other procedures. REGISTRATION & FEES: Because of the increase in the cost of books and supplies the St. Jude Religious Education Program will now charge a registration fee. $35.00/child for the catechetical year Family rate (two or more siblings) $60.00 for the catechetical year Children in First Eucharist and RCIC $45.00 for the catechetical year (they have 3 books no family discount for children in sacramental preparation.) SESSION TIMES: Religious Education (Grades Pre-K, to Grade 8) meets on Sunday, from 12:30p.m to 1:30 p.m. ABSENCES: Children preparing to receive the sacraments are allowed 3 unexcused absences. If the child is consistently absent the DRE will meet with the parents/guardians to assess the child s readiness to receive the sacraments.
BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE: The Religious Education classes share class space in the Multi Purpose Room (MPR), in the church and lanai areas. It is expected that our students behave in a Christian manner: each child respects their fellow students, catechist, catechist s aide and other adult volunteers and the property of others; each child participates and cooperates in class. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated during religious education classes, retreats, and prayer services. The following behavior is considered unacceptable: Consistently talking out of turn and interrupting the catechist and class. Using inappropriate language. Biting, kicking, spitting on or hitting another student or adult. Bullying. Threatening another student or adult with physical harm. In the event of continuous unacceptable behavior: The catechist will report the incident to the DRE. The DRE will meet with the student and parents to discuss the behavior of the student. If the behavior continues, the DRE will notify the Pastor and the student will be asked not to attend religious education classes until his/her behavior improves. COMMUNICATION: Information and events are communicated through a Religious Education memo/flyer, St. Jude Religious Education website (stjudehawaii.org) and/or parish bulletin. DISMISSAL: The safety of your child/children is a priority of St. Jude Parish. The following rules MUST be followed to protect your child/children during dismissal for Religious Education classes on Sunday s at 1:30pm. Please do not leave your child unattended after the 11:00a.m Mass and meet your child on time after Religious Education class ends at 1:30 p.m.
a) No child attending the St. Jude Religious Education Program will be allowed to: leave St. Jude property and meet the people assigned to pick them up at the bus stop or at the entrance to St. Jude at the top of the driveway walk or take public transportation without a parent/guardian or designated adult minor children will never be allowed to leave St. Jude property without a designated adult b) All children must be off of St. Jude property by 1:50pm. In case of emergency please call the DRE, Mrs. Boquer (389-1420). c) Do not bring any child other than your own home without written consent from the parent/guardian addressed to the DRE. If there is a question the DRE will call the parents. d) Parents/guardians must follow traffic regulations and traffic flow. Please be aware of children and parents using the crosswalk. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES: In case of an emergency in the class, the catechist aide will notify the DRE immediately. The catechist will remain with the class. If needed the DRE will call 911. The DRE will then contact the parents or the Emergency Contact designated on the registration form. FIRE DRILL/EVACUATION: Should the need arise to evacuate the church building; catechists will assist their classes by leaving from their designated exit. All classes will proceed to the far end of the parking lot and wait there until the all clear signal is given to return to class. We will have several fire drills during the year. PARENT OUTREACH & SUPPORT: Parents/Guardians can best support their child s spiritual formation by: *attending Mass each week with your child *getting children to class regularly and on time *taking an interest in what is happening in your child s class *practice and live the faith your child is learning
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION: Sacramental preparation classes are only for registered members of St. Jude Parish. If you are not a registered member of our parish we need a letter from your parish priest allowing your child/children to receive the sacraments at St. Jude. Students wishing to receive First Eucharist are required to register at the beginning of the school year. * The Diocese of Honolulu has stated that preparation for First Communion is a two year process. Your child/ren must have attended religious education in a parish or school in the first grade. If they did not attend first grade then they will be placed in a pre- First Communion class. If you are transferring from another (Catholic) Religious Education program, a written confirmation of attendance will be required from your prior parish. A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR CHILD S BIRTH AND BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE IS REQUIRED. CHILDREN PREPARING FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST EUCHARIST MUST BE REGISTERED IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 16, 2010. For the children receiving the sacraments there will be 3 Saturday sessions for them to attend with their parents. Please check the schedule for the dates and times. *Please note new policy for First Communion RCIC for Children: a) 7 years old and above who desire to be baptized will attend RCIC classes and receive the sacraments of Baptism and Communion with the other adult Catechumens at Easter Vigil Mass. Birth Certificate isrequired upon registering. b) Out of sequence children (children in 4 th grade and above) who have not received First Reconciliation or Communion will attend RCIC classes and receive their First Eucharist at Easter Vigil Mass. Birth and Baptismal certificates are required upon registering.
SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM: The Diocese of Honolulu mandates that all parishes and schools in Hawaii conduct Safe Environment training as part of their religious education curriculum. Parents must sign the consent form for their children to be included in the program. The classes will take place during the Sunday Religious Education classes. Those parents not allowing their child/ren to attend the Safe Environment class must keep their child/ren home on the day the class is given. St. Jude Religious Education students will be using Faith First Legacy Series (grades 1-8). Parents/guardians are welcome to visit the Faith First website at www.faithfirst.com.
