October 2018 Down by the Riverside What Is Riverside Doing Right? Rev. Michael Hafele Pastor Diana Amtower Organist Kaitlin Petrillose Office Manager Chuck Torgler Sexton Cecilia Quist Nursery Karen Ward Audio Doug Kasimier Treasurer Travis Smith Band Worship Leader One of the initiatives brought by the denomination recently is the "what is the Church doing right?" campaign to give witness to the extraordinary work of ministries in the name of Jesus Christ by the local churches. Large Churches, small Churches, mid-size Churches all celebrate innovative and passionate ministries to the communities they are called to serve. It is not self promotion but a witness to the diverse work of the Holy Spirit in communities around the country and world. In a world that has no problem focusing on the negative, the cynical, and insufficiency this opportunity moves us into a heart of thankfulness to the One who claims, calls, and sends His people in gracious partnership with Him. In that light, Id like to offer one of the multitude of ways in which RPC is "getting it right" in the ministry to Jesus Christ and His people. I'm reminded of the words of Paul to the Philippians, "Don't look out for your own interests, but also to the interests of others too." Those words resonate in the heart of this wonderful community of faith. On both individual and community levels, those words ring very true. For example, I cannot celebrate enough your passionate support and witness to the families of Cape View Elementary school in Cape Canaveral. The overwhelming majority of those who are recipients of your love have not stepped foot in this sanctuary and may never, yet you continue to respond to the physical needs of the students and families of Cape View with passion and incredible generosity. That selfless giving is without the expectation that recipients would "join" RPC, which would serve "our" interests, but since there is a need you respond with the loving abundance God has provided. From October through the New Year, I want to encourage you to give witness to "What Riverside Is Doing Right." Please send your written encouragements to Pastor Mikemichaelhafele@hotmail.com - and we will place them in the newsletters and on our Facebook page for others to celebrate and gain encouragement. Thank you all for your passionate ministry to Jesus Christ and this wonderful community! Grace and peace in Christ, Rev. Michael Hafele

Operation Christmas Child RPC will be collecting shoe boxes filled with gifts to be delivered to children in need around the world. Each box gives an opportunity for a child to experience the grace of our God, and hear his Holy Gospel. Your simple gesture will be vessel that helps these children open their hearts and minds to faithfully follow Christ!! Please look in Fellowship Hall for their donation table. Last date to donate is Nov. 18th. Contact J.B. Olds or Cliff Schmitt for further questions. Baptism in the Reformed Tradition continues through october! Rev. Michael Hafele, Facilitator Baptism is fundamental to our understanding of God s divine work in Jesus Christ as well as our acceptance as God s people. But what is baptism, where is it in the Bible? How do Presbyterians and other Reformed churches understand it? Why is it relevant to us today and especially for RPC? This 8 week series will offer an exploration into the biblical/theological, the practical, and the missional facets of baptism. This equipping opportunity will be meeting in Knox Parlor at 9:00am on Sundays before worship service. Walking Through the Lectionary w/ Rev. Mike Are you interested in walking through the Scripture texts for the sermons the coming week? Are you wondering some of the background to the texts, the connections, the opportunities to offer your insights into the sermon for Sunday? In this equipping opportunity, we will journey through the lectionary together in a relaxed off campus setting. Everyone is welcome to attend. Classes Meet Weekly: Mondays 7:00PM at Florida Beer Company in Cape Canaveral Wednesdays 12noon at Juice and Java in Cocoa Beach

Family Promise of Brevard, with Riverside as a host congregation, has served more than 100 families in its shelter program, and more than 800 families through diversion and prevention. With an average stay of 35 days in the program, more than 87 percent of our families are still in stable housing one year after completing this pathway home program. You can help support Family Promise financially by donating to this year s Helicopter Ball Drop for a chance to win up to $2,500. Balls will be dropped from a helicopter at the conclusion of the golf event Nov. 10th. A $25 donation gets you 1 ball, or you can get 3 balls for $50, or 10 balls for $100. The balls landing closest to the pins take the cash prizes. Winner need not be present to win. Balls can be purchased online at www.familypromiseofbrevard.org (click on golf under Events ) or see Judy George or Pam Weiger. Let s all pitch in to provide a hand up for homeless families! Peace & Global Witness Offering On October 7, we will be taking up a special offering that enables the church to promote the peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice in our own communities, as well as around the world. As a benediction in II Thessalonians 3;16, Paul tells us, Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. We can help others achieve this peace by contributing to this offering. Twenty-five percent of this offering stays in our local area, 25% stays in this region and 50% supports the world for peace and reconciliation being done by Presbyterians across the globe.
