GEne FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY July 23, 2017 *for those who wish to stand Bold print indicates congregational participation GATHERING AROUND GOD S WORD PRELUDE WELCOME Teressa Cooper CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 139 One: O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You discern my thoughts from far away. All: You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. One: Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? All: Search me, O God, and know my heart. See if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. One: Let us worship God! *OPENING HYMN Come, Ye Thankful People, Come #367 CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION We confess, O God, that our lives are a mixture of weeds and good seeds. The weeds choke us and limit our will to respond. We admire the good seeds and want to nourish them. When the harvest comes, we know that the good seed will be kept and all else will be judged unfit for your realm. Christ have mercy upon us as we learn of your will. Give us guidance and determination as we obey your command. Forgive our misplaced allegiance, when we settle for weeds. May we broadcast the landscape with the good seed of your Word. ASSURANCE OF PARDON

SUNG RESPONSE TO PARDON Gloria Patri #581 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE WELCOME THE CHILDREN This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshiping throng. Water, God s Word, bread and cup, prayer, and song: This is where children belong. CHILDREN S TIME Rev. Dr. Charlie Smith (Children may now be seated with their parents or those 5 and younger may leave for the nursery) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION PROCLAIMING GOD S WORD 1 ST SCRIPTURE READING Romans 8:12-25 (pg. 211, NT) One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. CHORAL ANTHEM 2 ND SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 (pg. 23, NT) One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. SERMON Weeds Rev. Dr. Charlie Smith AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF AFFIRMATION For the Fruit of All Creation #36 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. We are the Coffee Group and we meet every 2 nd and 4 th Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. in the conference room off the parlor. We sometimes have a subject, but we often get way off that subject, so we sometimes just wing it; it is more about the sharing ideas and thoughts with fellow nicely-aged friends than sticking to a plan. We have a good time, and we are very informal. No one has to talk unless he/she wants to. And we really do have coffee available. For more information, call Joyce Pearson, 825-5601. Come join us!
