Sacred Space meets every Wednesday in term time at 19.00 in the Crypt and includes times of song, reflection and discussion. After the service there will be food provided and an opportunity to get to know one another from the 26 September. Whether you are already involved in a Christian community, or someone asking questions and exploring your spirituality, or someone who would simply value the time for reflection and contemplation, you are very welcome. This year we are making upcycled poppies for The Canterbury War Horse sculpture (see pg. 12). Learning for All Originating from a Benedictine foundation, the Cathedral has been a seat of learning since the Middle Ages, and continues to be a centre of excellence for learning and education through a wide ranging learning and participation programme of activities designed to inspire all ages and levels of learner, from curriculum-linked activities, student coursework and academic practice through to specialist research, professional development opportunities, apprenticeships, training and volunteering. Canterbury College professional development photographic project With three neighbouring universities and an expanding college, and central to one of the largest education authorities in the UK, Canterbury Cathedral naturally delights in welcoming returning and new students to the Precincts at the start of the academic new year. Our collaborative work with our higher and further education partners supports their student course framework across a range of subjects and provides student professional development opportunities in the visitor attraction, arts, culture and heritage sectors. Post-graduate students have the opportunity to apply for internships in conservation, collections care and community engagement. The Cathedral is also a rich learning resource for students studying architecture, conservation, literature, music, fine art and, of course, religion. Many of the Cathedral s guides are retired teachers and lecturers, and the staff themselves are world-leading specialists in their field. Our study days and conferences provide an international platform for knowledge exchange and peer-led learning in cutting edge research and practice in conservation, traditional craft skills and collections management. Within the Cathedral is a wonderful Archives and Library resource of material dating back to the 9th century including manuscripts, historic records, photographs, maps and printed books. The Library contains around 30,000 books and pamphlets printed prior to 1900, and approximately 20,000 books and serials published in the 20th and 21st centuries covering national and local history, church history and theology, the anti-slavery movement, travel, medicine and natural science. The Schools Department welcomes over 11,000 children from more than 220 UK primary and secondary schools to the Cathedral per year. A further 1,200 overseas schools bring over 65,000 students. Over the last year the Schools Department has been working with Canterbury Christ Church University Faculty of Education to develop a unique Loan Box Scheme linking to STEM, art and design subjects. These boxes will be available in 2019 for schools, learning providers, community groups and other organisations to use. The schools outreach programme is being further developed to include online resources. Adopt a Stop! 14 The Cathedral s main organ sits at the heart of our music, supporting all who sing here and inspiring all who journey here. This beautiful instrument has reached the end of its performing life, placing impossible restrictions upon our music team. From 2020, the organ will hold over 6,000 pipes. Each pipe, from the smallest to the largest will add to this wonderful instrument, enhancing the voices of all who sing within these walls. Meeting point for the talks is in the south aisle of the Nave at quarter past the hour Monday-Saturday or 13.00 and 13.30 on Sundays. Talks are free but normal Precincts charges apply. Audio Guides Visitors can use the excellent audio guided tours, available in seven languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. The main tour lasts 40 minutes with an optional section lasting another 20 minutes which covers the Great Cloister and Chapter House. Guided Tour Our expert guides make the Cathedral and its rich history come to life and a guided tour is highly recommended. Exhibitions To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One, the Chapter of Canterbury has curated an unprecedented visual arts programme to highlight and impact of war, the displacement of people and the Cathedral s history as a place of refuge. Remember Me?! Remember Me?! is both a question and a command and is the starting point for Dawn Cole s exhibition in the Chapter House. Drawing on her year as the Cathedral s Artist in Residence spent researching in the Cathedral Archives, Cole s installation explores remembrance and memorialisation of those who never returned and those who spent their remaining years living with their memories. 20 Oct - 2 Nov and 9-12 Nov, 10.00-16.00, Chapter House. Meet the Artist An opportunity to meet the Artist in Residence and hear about her residency and research in the Cathedral Archives. 27 Oct, 11.00 and 14.00, Chapter House Diaries of the Here and Now The Diaries of the Here and Now is a project commemorating the centenary of the Armistice. Small hand-made blank diaries will be made available to collect and use to make a diary on 11 November 2018; a day that the men who fought 100 years ago might have dared to dream that the world would be a better place because of their actions. The Diaries of the Here and Now will record this day and give a snapshot into the lives of the people who take part. 1 Nov, 11.00-13.00 and 14.00-16.00. Free, normal Precincts charges apply. Diaries come with a pre-stamped envelope for returning on or after 11 Nov 2018. The Canterbury War Horse The Canterbury War Horse is a large-scale wooden sculpture created by Canterbury College School of Visual Arts students. Free, normal Precincts charges apply. Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word, War Items from the Cathedral s historic collection are off to London for an exhibition of Anglo-Saxon life. See the tiny but beautiful Anglo-Saxon sundial and the early 10th century Fonthill Letter, the earliest known example of a personal letter from a layman to the King of England.
