When We All Get to Heaven * HYMN When the Saints Go Marching In 1. Oh, when the saints, go marching in, Oh, when the saints go marching in, O Lord, I want to be in that number, When the saints go marching in. 2. And when the sun begins to shine, And when the sun begins to shine, O Lord, I want to be in that number, When the sun begins to shine. 3. And when the trumpet sounds the call, When the trumpet sounds the call, O Lord, I want to be in that number, When the trumpet sounds the call. 4. (Trumpet only) * GREETING P Sisters and brothers, called to freedom in Christ: Grace, mercy, and peace be with you all. C And also with you. * KYRIE * CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the Sovereign over all the earth, the Wisdom from on high, our merciful Judge and Savior.. P Let us boldly approach the throne of grace, trusting in God's mercy and love. Generous and faithful God, C we confess to you all the ways, known and unknown, that we reject and undermine your steadfast love. Though you made us your people, we treat strangers with suspicion. Though you forgave our debts, we collect without mercy. Yet we are quick to pass judgment on others. Have mercy on us, O God, and remember your promise to us, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Through the living Word, Jesus Christ, God forgives your every debt, your every sin, and gives you a new heart and a new spirit. (continued on next page...) 2

* HYMN OF PRAISE * SALUTATION AND RESPONSE * PRAYER OF THE DAY P Almighty God, whose people are knit together in one holy Church, the body of Christ our Lord: Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (continued on next page...) 3 4

FIRST READING: Revelation 7:9 17 9After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with 10 palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" 11And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped 12 God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." 13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, 14 and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." PSALM 34:1 10, 22 [Bless the LORD, O my soul,* and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul,* and forget not all his benefits. 3 He forgives all your sins* and heals all your infirmities; 4 he redeems your life from the grave* and crowns you with mercy and lovingkindness; 5 he satisfies you with good things,* and your youth is renewed like an eagle's. 5 Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal ;they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. 16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; 17for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." A The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 6 The LORD ex- ecutes righteousness* and judgment for all who are oppressed. 7 He made his ways known to Moses* and his works to the chil- dren of Israel.] 8 The LORD is full of compas- sion and mercy,* slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 He will not al- ways accuse us,* nor will he keep his an- ger forever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins,* nor rewarded us according to our wickedness. 11 For as the heavens are high a- bove the earth,* so is his mercy great upon those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west,* so far has he removed our sins from us. 13 As a father cares for his children,* so does the LORD care for those who fear him. SECOND READING: 1 John 3:1 3 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know 2 him. Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is * GOSPEL ACCLAMATION And I will raise you up, and I will raise you up, and I will raise you up on the last day. * GOSPEL: Matthew 5:1 12 6 revealed, we will be like him, for we will 3 see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. A The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his 2 disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN WOV # 690 SERMON Shall We Gather at the River * HYMN LBW # 176 For All Your Saints, O Lord 8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. * NICENE CREED C We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was 7 crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen THE PRAYERS (Please be seated.) A Remembering the saints who have gone before us and giving thanks for God's blessings, we pray for the church, all in need, and God's good creation. Brief silence. God's precious saints A man mourning the sudden death of his young wife wondered, Where was God when Jenny died? Unable to sleep one night, he turned to Scripture and read Psalm 116:3 (NIV): The anguish of the grave came upon me: I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. The man s anguish echoed the psalmist s. Reading on, he discovered verse 15: Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. What does it mean by precious? the man wondered. The footnote proved helpful: Not in the sense of highly valued, but of that which is carefully watched over. The widower pictured God watching over his wife in her last moments. That s where God was, the man thought with relief, with Jenny the whole time. May we, too, be assured that God truly cares for his saints not only at death but also in life, through grief and into healing. 24
