MORNING WORSHIP. The Silent Meditation upon Entering the Sanctuary

Transcription:

THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 THE NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST If you care for me speak to me without words in a spiral of starlings thrown into a bank of wind, scarves of an invisible dancer making the sky a stage. Make a negligent gesture like the drop of a chestnut at my feet, the glossy nucleus bounding out of its spiky casing, rolling to me, a gift round and brown as a chocolate cream. Caress me with a curtain of dew on my moonlit skylight, or boulders shining under the clear skin of rain. In the rock garden a crimson cosmos articulates its bright, small world. Speak to my eyes in the syllables of light and color, if you care for me. Remind me about space as I watch the finches peck at the wind in the balsams. The do cleaves the air current over the ribbon of creek. The great blue heron elbows its way up through gaps wild with branches and you are opening for me, too, a new passage between the trees. By the way you breath dead leaves into a small whirlwind of fire show me, if you care for me, how you can lift me from the dust, light me like tinder.

THE WORSHIP OF GOD RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL GATHERING WORDS & INVOCATION Marcus McFaul PRELUDE If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee, BWV 647 J.S. Bach INTROIT This Is the Day Taizé * CALL TO WORSHIP One: I am the church; you are the church. One: We depend on our seniors and long-time members to remember where we came from and where we have been. One: We depend on our children to retell our sacred stories as they grow. One: We depend on our youth and young adults to ask us why we do things this way and to suggest something new. One: We need each other to be the church. One: Let us worship the One who has been our help in the past. All: And who is our hope now and in times to come! * PROCESSIONAL HYMN O God Our Help in Ages Past 67 * PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST One: The peace of Christ be with you. Many: And also with you. Please greet one another with this ancient sign of welcome and extension of hospitality and peace. * SONG OF PRAISE This is the Day 286 This is the day, this is the day that Lord has made, that the Lord has made; We will rejoice, we will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day, this is the day, that the Lord has made. A MOMENT WITH CHILDREN Following the Moment with Children, children ages 4-5 th grade are invited to process out of the Sanctuary with Stephanie to the Chapel for Worship with Children. LISTENING & LEARNING THE PSALM LESSON Psalm 124 If I had a song to sing, this would be the verse If I could write out a line this is what I d say: Without You, God, holding me in hand, (I ll say it again), With You, God, holding me in hand, the darkness would have drowned me, the flood waters would have engulfed me, the hatred of the world would have swallowed me, the stock market would have crushed me, the competition with peers would have hardened me. Then, alone and without a connection to tether me, I would have been lost to friends, lost to You, lost the community I long for. But I ve had enough of flood waters. I m tired of drowning. I don t want to choke on rage ever again. MINISTRY ACROSS THE DECADES HEARING OUR JOYS & CONCERNS From Fingerprints on Every Moment, Jerry Webber Melinda Wilde Velma Ferrell & Fred Schroeder Dale Osborne CALL TO PRAYER If You Will Trust in God to Guide You 565 Stanza one is sung by the choir, stanza two is sung by the entire assembly. DISCIPLINE OF SILENCE THE MORNING PRAYER RESPONSE If You Will Trust in God to Guide You 565 Sing, pray, and keep God s ways unswerving, so do you own part faithfully! And trust God s word, though undeserving, you will find God s promise to be true. God will never forsake in need the soul that trusts in God in deed.

HEARING & RESPONDING SERMON Holy Conjunction Marcus McFaul OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH, SERVICE, & FELLOWSHIP Complete the requested information and then pass it back down the row. Thank you for worshipping with us at Binkley! SENTENCES OF STEWARDSHIP Having recognized the many gifts we bring and receive from one aother, let us share what we have in gratitude. May these tangible gifts and all the intangible gifts we share among us make known to the world that God is within us and among us. GIVING OUR GIFTS, TITHES, & OFFERINGS ANTHEM AT THE OFFERING God is Our Refuge Allen Pote God is our refuge and strength; a present help in time of trouble. Though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though the waters roar and foam, we will not fear. Come and behold the work of the Lord, the awesome acts of God. God is in the midst of the people, in all the earth. God is the Word, we are the hands, God will lead us. God is the air, we are the song, we will celebrate God's presence all the day long. Come and behold the work of the Lord, the awesome acts of God. God is in the midst of the people, in all the earth. God is the rain, we are the stones, God will cleanse us. God is the air, we are God's song, we will celebrate God's presence all the day long. Text: Psalm 46 * DOXOLOGY Please sign with the leader or simply sing. Bach Upon leaving the Sanctuary, please be mindful of those choosing to use the Voluntary as their final act of worship. MUSIC NOTES Bach was one of the greatest and most influential composers for the organ. Bach was also a numerologist and master word/ text painter. Bach's monumental Fugue in E-flat Major could be viewed as a representation of the Holy Trinity. The title "St. Anne" has frequently been added to the title because the fugal subject resembles the first phrase of "O God, Our Help in Ages Past". If we stick with the idea of this representing Bach's understanding of the Holy Trinity, we can draw the following conclusions: 1. Three sections: a stately, majestic but simplistic statement of the fugal subject representing the God-head; Alpha and Omega; First and Last; God the past, present, and future 2. Three flats for the key signature (E-flat Major) 3. A spritley, dance-like middle section, manuals only (no pedal) representing God to earth come down; two voices (could represent both the divinity and humanity of Christ) 4. A final festive fugal section utilizing the full resources of the organ, a joyful representation of the completion of the Holy Trinity. We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave your name and contact information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. This Hurricane, like Matthew in 2016 and Maria in 2017, has affected millions of people in our general area. Therefore, many of you have inquired about how Binkley can participate in a concerted effort to lend a helping hand. The church's response will be directed to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering that has as served our American Baptist Churches emergency relief effort for much of Binkley's history. One Great Hour of Sharing was established following WWII by Christian denominations around the United States. When you contribute to Hurricane Florence relief through One Great Hour of Sharing you can be assured that 100% of your dollars will go to disaster relief and not to administrative overhead. This is possible because the ABC covers the overhead costs. If you are able to make a financial gift, please write a check to Binkley Baptist Church with "OGHS Florence Relief" in the item section. We are also encouraged to be mindful and prayerful about our brothers and sisters who are struggling to put their lives back together. As you pray, please lift up the citizens of Puerto Rico, who continue to mourn and rebuild from Maria. May God have mercy on us all. ~Dale Angels Among Us: An Exhibit Honoring Binkley s 60 th Anniversary: Today only, see Angels Among Us, a fine-arts exhibit in the Robert Seymour Chapel. This eclectic exhibit features selected winged sculptures from a private collection in Chapel Hill. The angels range in scale from small candlesticks to large statement pieces. They draw from a variety of traditions, including 19 th century Victorian and 20 th century modern. Adults are invited to visit the exhibit after worship until 3 p.m. today. Written

guidelines are provided. Children and teens who attended Sunday School this morning already have viewed the exhibit with their classes and participated in a discussion about it. The exhibit is presented by Binkley s Fine Arts Committee as part of the church s 60 th Anniversary celebration. WEDNESAY NIGHT SERIES: Oct. 3, 5:30 pm, Lounge: Program: A Life Changing Friendship: 12-yearold Kaelyn "KK" Krawczyk has a rare disorder called Mastocytosis, which causes life-threatening reactions from things like being tired, hot, cold, and exercise. There is no monitor to detect when KK is about to have a reaction. That s where JJ comes in, KK s EENP dog since she was 5. JJ can sniff these reactions and warn responsible adults. Join us to hear KK share her amazing bout her journey with her life-saving canine partner. Check Event in the Friendship Register or contact the office by NOON ON MONDAY 10/1 to make a reservation. Dinner is $7 for adults, $4 for children. TIME FOR ACTION: Pastor Marcus, the Church Council, and the Reference Team are all moving us into a time of exploring, prioritizing, and putting into action, specific ways we will live out our mission of building joyful and compassionate community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing peace and justice in the way of Jesus. Vision 20/20: Sponsored by Church Council Sunday, September 30 The congregation is invited to join the church staff and council in helping determine specific goals and strategies for Binkley s focus in the next year and a half. Please join us immediately following the worship service at a Lunch and Learn (Lunch will be served.) The event will take place in the Fellowship Hall and child care is available. Please add your voice to those of your fellow Binkleyites. And feel free to contact Sonnie VanSant with any questions or for more information. Lunch and Learn: Sponsored by the Reference Team Sunday, October 21, Post-worship The Reference Team has developed a Behavioral Covenant to be introduced at a Lunch and Learn gathering on Sunday, October 21. In this session they will share and demonstrate how we can use the covenant in both individual interactions and large group discussions or in problem-solving. BINKLEY GOLF OPEN: The Occasional Binkley Fall Open has been rescheduled to October 2, 2018 at the Southwick Golf Course near Swepsonville. We will gather at 9:30 for team selection. THE BINKLEY PUMPKIN PATCH: October 14th through October 31 st : October is here and that means the Chancel Choir's annual pumpkin patch will be here October 14th through the 31st. This is one of the Chancel Choir's biggest fundraisers for the year. This fundraiser helps to support our Choral Scholars ministry plus supply special instrumentalists throughout the year that assist us in worship and other special programs. We need your help in two ways. First, by letting your friends, families, and coworkers know that the Binkley Pumpkin Patch will be available October 14th through the 31st. Second, by signing up to take one of the shifts to sell the pumpkins. A sign-up sheet is available in the Narthex both before and after worship services. The Chancel Choir at Binkley greatly appreciates the congregations continual support and acknowledges that many of our accomplishments are only made possible through the generous support from the congregation, and for that, we sincerely thank you.
