We celebrate with Fr. Gosnell his 40th year of priestly ministry, and we wish him well as he begins retirement in a few weeks. He will be missed. Sadly, we find ourselves saying goodbye to Jackie Swinerton, our Youth Minister. As you will read in this week s bulletin, Jackie has been offered the position of Youth Minister in her home parish in Cleveland, Ohio. In speaking with Jackie, I know that it was a difficult decision for her to make, but one that she could not pass up. To minister in the parish her vocation as a youth minister was inspired is a wonderful thing, but to be near her family is a great support. Jackie, always know that you hold a special place in the hearts of many here at St. Ursula s, and that you will be greatly missed! God bless, Fr. Jason A Message from Fr. Jason A Message from jackie When I moved to Baltimore a year ago, I had to say goodbye to many things. My family and friends, my childhood home, my dog. But, I was greeted by an exciting adventure and a welcoming parish I am blessed to call my home. I love St. Ursula and am so blessed to have served the teens and the parish for the past year. After much prayer and discernment, I have decided to resign as Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Confirmation. Family is very important, and while my year away from them was fruitful, I feel like I m being called back to Cleveland as support for them. My last day will be Friday, July 13th. I am so sad to be leaving but I am excited for the future of youth ministry at St. Ursula. Thank you for supporting our teens. Thank you for praying for our teens. Thank you for opening up your homes and welcoming me into your families. You truly make St. Ursula a special place to be. Please pray for our teens through this transition and please be assured that I am praying for you. Jackie Swinerton Mrs. Stephanie Shock Communications Coordinator Stephanie.Shock@archbalt.org

Catholic Q & A My Protestant friend told me it s unbiblical to call priests father. Is it really unbiblical? Your friend is referring to the Gospel of Matthew 23:9, in which Jesus says Call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Jesus also admonishes those listeners not to use the word Rabbi, or teacher, which we know is also commonly used, and which Saint Paul used in scripture. And we also know that he wasn t saying we can t call our dads by the title of father. So what DID Jesus mean? We should never dismiss the words of Jesus, so we need to dig deeply to see what He was saying, and understand the context in which is was used. We need to understand how the Apostles interpreted these words of Jesus, how the early Church interpreted them. We know in other areas of scripture Jesus speaks in hyperbole, which is to say an exaggerated way of speaking, not to be taken literally, such as when he told us to pluck out our eyes if they cause us to sin. What we also know is that in other areas of Scripture the Apostles and disciples refer to themselves as spiritual fathers. Act 7:2 addresses brothers and fathers ; I Tim 1:2 and 1 Tim 1:18 and Titus 1:4 all refer to the readers as sons; Saint Paul even says For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel in 1 Cor. 4:14 15. When we look at the specific passage in context, we see Jesus warning against hypocrisy, warning against power for the sake of power, and against using that influence and power over other people, because all power belongs to the Father in heaven. Jesus commanded His Apostles to shepherd His flock, to be spiritual leaders. We are all brothers and sisters in the body of Christ, and priests, bishops, and the pope are our spiritual fathers, there to shepherd us through the storms of life, bringing us Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist, allowing us to encounter the Trinity in the Sacraments. It is fitting that we address them as father and it s in fact not unbiblical. GROW IN YOUR FAITH Saint of the Day Nativity of St. John the Baptist Saint of the Day for June 24 Jesus called John the greatest of all those who had preceded him: I tell you, among those born of women, no one is greater than John. But John would have agreed completely with what Jesus added: [Y]et the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he (Luke 7:28). John spent his time in the desert, an ascetic. He began to announce the coming of the Kingdom, and to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus. His baptism, he said, was for repentance. But one would come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John was not worthy even to untie his sandals. His attitude toward Jesus was: He must increase; I must decrease (John 3:30). John was humbled to find among the crowd of sinners who came to be baptized the one whom he already knew to be the Messiah. I need to be baptized by you (Matthew 3:14b). But Jesus insisted, Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:15b). Jesus, true and humble human as well as eternal God, was eager to do what was required of any good Jew. Jesus thus publicly entered the community of those awaiting the Messiah. But making himself part of that community, he made it truly messianic. The greatness of John, his pivotal place in the history of salvation, is seen in the great emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself both made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted countless people to the banks of the Jordan, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus, even to sending away some of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus. Perhaps John s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason, when he was in prison he sent his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Jesus answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah. John himself would share in the pattern of messianic suffering, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias. Saint of the Day reprinted with permission of Franciscan Media.
