Transfiguration of our Lord The Scripture Readings Exodus 24:12-18 Then the LORD said to Moses, Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them. So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. And he said to the elders, Wait here for us until we come back to you. Indeed, Aaron and Hur are with you. If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them. Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain. Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. The sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. Exodus 33:11-23; 34:4-6, 8 So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle. Then Moses said to the LORD, See, You say to me, Bring up this people. But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight. Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people. And He said, My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. Then he said to Him, If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth. So the LORD said to Moses, I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name. And he said, Please, show me Your glory. Then He said, I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But He said, You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live. And the LORD said, Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen. So he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone. Now the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, so Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. The Transfiguration of our Lord - 14

1 Kings 19:3-9, 11-13, 15-16 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he prayed that he might die, and said, It is enough! Now, LORD, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers! Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an angel touched him, and said to him, Arise and eat. Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. And the angel of the LORD came back the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you. So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Horeb, the mountain of God. And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah? Then He said, Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD. And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, What are you doing here, Elijah? Then the LORD said to him: Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. Bolharsky Tone 2 The Transfiguration of our Lord The Litija The Transfiguration of our Lord - 15

The following additional Litija verses are also sung in the Bulharsky Tone 2: You were transfigured in glory on Mount Tabor, O Christ God / showing to Your Disciples the glory of Your Divinity. / Enlighten us also with the light of Your knowledge and guide us in the path of Your commandments,/// for You alone are good and the Lover of mankind! Christ, the Light that shone before the sun, / Who in the body lived upon the earth, / The Transfiguration of our Lord - 16

and before His Crucifixion fulfilled all His fearful dispensation in a manner befitting His divine majesty, /today upon Mount Tabor mystically manifests the image of the Trinity. / Taking aside the expressly chosen Disciples, Peter, James and John, / He led them up into the mountain alone. / Concealing briefly the flesh He had assumed, He was transfigured before them, / manifesting the loveliness of the original beauty, though short of full perfection; / for He spared them as He assured them, lest seeing, they die./yet they perceived as far as they were able with their bodily eyes. / He likewise presented the chief Prophets, Moses and Elijah, / who testified to His Divinity: / that He is indeed the true brightness of the essence of the Father, / the Ruler of the living and the dead. / Therefore, a cloud covered them like a tabernacle, / and out of a cloud the Father s voice bore witness and said: This is My beloved Son, / Whom I have begotten without change from the womb before the Morning Star; / I have sent Him to save those who are baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, / and who confess with faith that the one power of the Godhead is indivisible: Listen to Him! / O Christ our God, supreme in goodness and the Lover of mankind, / shine also upon us with the light of Your unapproachable glory,/// and make us worthy to inherit Your eternal Kingdom! The Communion Hymn The Transfiguration of our Lord - 35

The Amvon Prayer Master Jesus Christ our God, lead us upon the all-holy mountain of love, just as You led Your chief apostles upon a lofty mountain; and open the eyes of our minds to a sight of unspeakable beauty just as for Your apostles You surrounded Your bodily form with a marvelous brightness, for You revealed the rays of Your Godhead through Your body. Guide us into better things by Your all-powerful right hand. Beyond our understanding You changed this limiting form: now raise our senses to see Your lordship witnessed by Moses and Elias. Give us a constant memory of the voice of Your eternal Father, revealing His beloved Son, so that we may put Your commandments into action, and shine forth with You to those worthy of Your immortal kingdom, who see in You the eternal Father, with whom You are blessed, together with Your all-holy, good and lifecreating Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. The Transfiguration of our Lord - 36
