Welcome! In this summer s worship series, Alive, we ll explore the work of the Holy Spirit. Understanding the Holy Spirit (also known as Spirit of God, Holy Ghost, Breath of God, Paraclete, and a bunch more) is essential to understanding God s work and will. God; in communion with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and people like us; has made a new spiritual community where all people are welcome. Welcome to the Kingdom of God! The image of walking is everywhere in Scripture. Walk in the light. Walk in love. Be like the disciples and walk in the footsteps of Jesus, your rabbi. What does it mean to walk in the Spirit? Parents, you can find canvas activity bags for your children in the back of the sanctuary. For infants up through age three, the nursery is available. Thank you for joining us today. We welcome you! You are also invited to take an Announcements sheet here at Easter, or visit easter.org for events & activities (Announcement sheets are posted weekly under Events & News). Alive! Walking in the Spirit June 17, 2018 8:30 & 10 a.m. This summer, the June and August worship services will feature a setting written by Ben Kornelis. If you d like to become familiar with the music, go to easter.org (Sermons) and click on the green button. This worship series is based upon the book We make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren. Prayer of the Day God of life, send your spirit to this place. Teach us to walk with you, one step at a time, for you have promised to meet us along the road. We want to be fully alive with your Spirit, Amen. Anthem: Just a Closer Walk arr. Ruth Elaine Schram Bev Hannon, vocalist Marilyn Bader, piano I am weak but thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to thee. Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea, daily walking close to thee: let it be, dear lord, let it be. Through this world of toils and snares, if I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee. So, when my feeble life is o er, time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely o er to thy kingdom shore, to thy shore. Children s Message Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Lesson: Colossians 2: 6-7 (NRSV) As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 5

Al - le - lu - ia. Gospel: John 15:1-8 (NRSV) Jesus said, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. L: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Pastor Kristen Capel 6
Hymn of the Day: We Know That Christ Is Raised Hymnal #449 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Another translation of catholic church is church universal 7

Offering Prayer God of life, be here now warming our hearts. You, who dwells in the wind; you, who breathes just like us; remind us to share. Inspire us to live fully. Remind us that we live within the breath of your Spirit. We thank you for your love and grace which sustains us every day. In your living name we pray, Amen. Pastor 4 Ó Ó œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ w The Lord be with you. And al - so with you. Pastor Pastor œ œ œ œ œ œ œ w œ œ Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. œ œ œ œ œ œ œ œ w P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: All are invited to receive these gifts of God. Children are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Children who have received instruction are welcome to commune. Communion today is at the table. Grape juice is available in the tray and gluten-free wafers are at the back of the sanctuary near the sound booth. 9
