An Ancient-Future Faith Community Liturgy April 10, 2016 (Third Sunday of Easter) GATHERING c Alleluia! Christ is risen! The grave is empty! Alleluia! Christ is risen indeed! c Come, sing praises to the LORD, O you His faithful ones, and give thanks to His holy name. We extol you, O LORD, for You have lifted us up. You have turned our mourning into dancing; You have filled us with joy So that our souls may praise You and not be silent. O LORD, our God, we will give thanks to You forever, and with the saints of all the ages we proclaim, Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and praise! from Psalm 30 and Revelation 5 Calling St. Paul, He Qi, 2001

Crown Him with Many Crowns Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne. Hark! How the heav nly anthem drowns all music but its own! Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee, And hail Him as thy matchless King thro all eternity. Crown Him the Lord of love! Behold His hands and side Rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified. All hail, Redeemer, hail! For Thou hast died for me: Thy praise and glory shall not fail throughout eternity. Crown Him the Lord of life! Who triumphed o er the grave; Who rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save. His glories now we sing, Who died and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring and lives that death may die. Public domain. Text: Matthew Bridges; Music: George J. Elvey (DIADEMATA) INVOCATION Prayers of welcome and praise Let the Peoples Praise Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb. (Repeat) Let the peoples praise You, O God. (4x) Only One, only One worthy (3x) Worthy is the Lamb. We, Your people, praise You, O God. (4x) Glory to the Righteous One (3x) From the ends of the earth we hear songs. (Hallelujah! The Lamb has won). 2005 Alisha Powell/Forerunner Music; Alisha Powell 2

PROFESSION OF FAITH This is the gospel, which we received, by which we were saved, and in which we stand: Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; He was buried, and was raised on the third day according the Scriptures, and He appeared to many faithful witnesses. In Christ, the Lamb, we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our sins in accordance with the riches of His grace. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. He reigns far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come King of kings, and Lord of lords! from 1 Corinthians 15:1-7; Ephesians 1:7, 20-21, Hebrews 12:2 Reading: Revelation 5:11-14 Crown Him with Many Crowns Crown Him the Lord of lords, Who over all doth reign, Who once on earth, th incarnate Word, For ransomed sinners slain, Now lives in realms of light, Where saints with angels sing Their songs before Him day and night, Their God, Redeemer, King. Crown Him, James B. Janknegt 2002 3

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION Thus says the high and exalted One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place, and with the contrite and lowly of spirit, in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. Isaiah 57:15 For though the Lord is exalted, yet He regards the lowly, but the proud He knows from afar. Psalm 130:6 [Silence] Righteous God, for our sake You made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin, for our redemption. He became what we are so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Yet we confess that often we ignore our sin. Too often we do not confess. We keep silent about the sin that clings to us. But our sins are too great a burden for us. Forgive us. In Christ take away our iniquity, and grant that we may serve You in newness of life to the glory of Your name. Amen. Agnus Dei O Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world; Have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world; Have mercy on us. O Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world; Grant us peace, Grant us peace. 2001 Arr. ICS, UBP; Setting Jim Hart. Used by permission. ASSURANCE OF PARDON Brothers and sisters, God s faithful ones this is the good news of God s salvation: By His resurrection He has overcome death so that He might make us share in the righteousness He won for us by His death. By His power we too are already now resurrected to a new life. Christ s resurrection is a guarantee of our glorious resurrection. 4 from Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 45

Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we also have obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God! Romans 5:1-2 TIME OF OFFERING Words and prayers of thanksgiving and praise Redeemed Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb! Redeemed through His infinite mercy; His child, and forever, I am. Refrain: Redeemed, redeemed; redeemed by the blood of the Lamb! Redeemed through His infinite mercy; His child, and forever, I am. Redeemed and so happy in Jesus, No language my rapture can tell! I know that the light of His presence With me doth continually dwell. I think of my blessed Redeemer; I think of Him all the day long. I sing, for I cannot be silent; His love is the theme of my song. I know I shall see in His beauty The King, in whose law I delight, Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps And giveth me songs in the night. Words: Fanny J. Crosby, 1882. Public domain. To Thee be endless praise, for Thou for us hast died. Be Thou, O Lord, thro endless days adored and magnified! Public domain. Text: Matthew Bridges. Music: George J. Elvey (DIADEMATA) Benediction: I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord. Because He lives, and has triumphed over death, you also live. Alleluia! Amen. Since we have been raised with Christ, let us go forth as His witnesses in the joy and power of His resurrection. Alleluia! Amen. Almighty God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever, as you go forth into the world to love and serve the risen Christ. Amen. Thanks be to God! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! A thought about worship The primary metaphor for the Easter season is the church as the resurrected people living a resurrected spirituality. Because of Easter we are in union with Christ and are called to live in our baptismal identity in his resurrection. This essential theme of Easter cannot be communicated in a day. It takes a season.... It is in worship that resurrection spirituality is learned and experienced. (Robert E. Webber, Ancient-Future Time: Forming Spirituality through the Christian Year [Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 2004], 148-151).
