FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Two Kinds of People June 11 & 12, 2016 5:00pm & 8:00am AS WE GATHER Both Law and Gospel; both sinner and saint; both confession and absolution. On this earth, we live with a constant tension of a both... and when it comes to who we are and what God calls us. We hear that clearly in today s Scripture, beginning with 2 Samuel. King David admitted, I have sinned against the LORD, and the prophet Nathan assured him, The LORD has put away your sin. In the Gospel, the sinful woman at the dinner party washed Jesus feet with her tears of repentance, and Jesus said, Your sins are forgiven. Realizing our own sin, the breaking of God s Law which is good and wise for our earthly lives, and recognizing our continual need of a Savior, the Lord never leaves us in our guilt and shame. In our own repentance, we find the Good News of living in a both... and state, with the last words from the Lord always being ones of hope, promise, joy, and forgiveness through Christ alone that in Christ Jesus... we might receive the promised Spirit through faith (Galatians 3:14). WELCOME [Jesus said,] But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26 HANDSHAKES & HUGS PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #915 Today Your Mercy Calls Us Today your mercy calls us To wash away our sin. However great our trespass, Whatever we have been. However long from mercy Our hearts have turned away, Your precious blood can wash us And make us clean today. Today your gate is open, And all who enter in Shall find a Father s welcome And pardon for their sin. The past shall be forgotten, A present joy be giv n, A future grace be promised, A glorious crown in heav n. 1 continued Today our Father calls us; His Holy Spirit waits; His blessed angels gather Around the heav nly gates. No question will be asked us How often we have come; Although we oft have wandered, It is our Father s home. O all-embracing Mercy, O ever-open Door, What should we do without you When heart and eye run o er? When all things seem against us, To drive us to despair, We know one gate is open, One ear will hear our prayer. INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have Been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Hear the Gospel, the Good News, that almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE This Is the Feast Page 155 Refrain 2 continued This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God. Refrain Power, riches, wisdom, and strength, and honor, blessing, and glory are His. Refrain

Sing with all the people of God, and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing, honor, glory, and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. Refrain For the Lamb who was slain has begun His reign. Alleluia. Refrain SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us your gifts of faith, hope, and love that we may receive the forgiveness you have promised and love what you have commanded; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING 2 Samuel 11:26 12:10, 13 14 (Following his grievous sins, David is confronted with God s Law by the prophet Nathan and comes to repentance.) When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she 3 became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD. The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, "There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him. "Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him." David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, "As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity." Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave your master's house to you, and your master's wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.' Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." Nathan replied, "The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die." EPISTLE Galatians 2:15 21; 3:10 14 (Justified by faith apart from the Law and living by faith) "We who are Jews by birth and not 'Gentile sinners' know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified. "If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners, does that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not! If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker. For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the 4

Law." Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 7:36 8:3 (As a sinful woman humbly anoints the feet of Jesus, she comes to learn the Gospel.) Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is-- that she is a sinner." Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said."two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?" Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven-- for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. (Be seated) 5 CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #761 Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy riven side which flowed, Be of sin the double cure: Cleanse me from its guilt and pow r. Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill Thy Law s demands; Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow, All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring; Simply to Thy cross I cling. Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly: Wash me, Savior, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyelids close in death, When I soar to worlds unknown, See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee. SERMON Two People: Different, but the Same Luke 7:36-8:3 OFFERINGS As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register to see the names of those to greet after the service. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us lift up our hearts and minds and voices to our God and Father in heaven and look to Him for the forgiveness of our sins and every good and perfect gift through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Almighty and most merciful God, we give you thanks for all your goodness and tender mercies, especially for the gift of your dear Son and for the revelation of your good and gracious will. People: Put our sins far from us, and guard us by Your Holy Spirit, that we not despise your Word nor disgrace your name but live by faith as your children. 6

Pastor: O God, in mercy you have called us by the Gospel, and by your grace you keep us and your whole Christian Church united in Christ Jesus in the one true faith. People: So guard and keep us strong, and preserve your Church in the unity of your Spirit, that the blessing of Abraham may extend to the nations through your Son. Pastor: Almighty and everlasting God, you desire not the death of any sinner, but that all people should repent and be saved through faith in Christ. According to your divine and holy wisdom, bring to repentance those who defame your Word through false doctrine and evil living. People: Enlighten them with the knowledge of the truth, that they may know the grace of your Gospel and serve you in the peace and righteousness of faith. Pastor: O Lord, our God, it is by your Word and Spirit that your Church on earth is called, gathered, enlightened and sanctified. Grant, therefore, that we and all your people may truly serve you according to our callings. People: Bless our colleges and seminaries to raise up faithful preachers and teachers of your Word so that the Gospel of your Son brings to faith many at home and in distant lands. Pastor: Lord of the Church, we praise your name for the gift of Holy Baptism, especially for Madelyn, Jaeden, and Oliver who are baptized into Christ this weekend. Bless parents, sponsors, and family members to rejoice in this rebirth and to grow in faith with these little ones day by day. People: As your children, grant us all to rejoice in having been claimed as your people, cleansed of our sins, and help us to heed your call to walk closely with you each day. Pastor: O Lord, we have sinned against you, and for our sins we surely deserve to die. But as your redeemed people, grant us to live by faith day by day. Grant also health and strength in heart and mind, body and soul, to all your servants who are sick or suffering in various ways especially Arlene, Ruth, Kathleen, Doris, Barb, Jean, Mae, Bob, Marion, Helen, Leonard, LuEva, Linda, Gladys, Russ, Jack, Shirley, Lois and Sarah. People: Sustain them in their time of trial and grant them deliverance in your good time. 7 Pastor: Lord God, heavenly Father, from your hand we receive all good gifts, and by your grace we are guarded from all evil. We rejoice with Vern and Norma as they celebrate 65 years of marriage and Versa Reichert as she celebrates her 90 th birthday, and the Gottschalks as they rejoice in Roger s 50 years of teaching and music ministry. Grant us thankful hearts for all your blessings, especially knowing Jesus Christ. People: As He loves us and has given Himself for us all, enable us to love one another and to render hospitality in your name. Pastor: Father in heaven, pour out your Holy Spirit on those who seek your Son at His Table this day. According to your tender mercies, grant that we poor sinners may worship you rightly by faith in your Word. People: Free us by your gracious forgiveness given through the body and blood of Christ, and bring forth the fruits of love for all the members of your Church. Pastor: Almighty God, unto you live all who depart from this vale of tears in the Lord Jesus Christ. We give you thanks for all your servants who have finished their course in faith and now rest from their labors. People: Grant that we, together with them, may enjoy your perfect paradise in eternal glory. Pastor: Into your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. SACRAMENT THE WORDS OF OUR LORD THE PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. AGNUS DEI Page 163 Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. HYMN #628 Your Table I Approach Your table I approach; Dear Savior, hear my prayer. Let not an unrepentant heart Prove hurtful to me there. Lord, I confess my sins And mourn their wretched bands; a contrite heart is sure to find Forgiveness at Your hands. Your body and Your blood, Once slain and shed for me, Are taken at Your table, Lord, In blest reality. Search not how this takes place, This wondrous mystery; God can accomplish vastly more Than what we think could be. O grant, most blessed Lord, That earth and hell combined May not about this sacrament Raise doubt within my mind. Oh, may I never fail To thank You day and night For Your true body and true blood, O God, my peace and light. HYMN #537 Beautiful Savior Beautiful Savior, King of creation, Son of God and Son of Man! Truly I d love Thee, Truly I d serve Thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.
