Pre-Session Singing: (10 minutes) Purpose: When all children are in one group singing, it is easy for new children to join the group and immediately get involved. When the music can be correlated, it introduces the theme for the day. Choose two to three songs and list them here. Large Group Opening: (15 minutes) Purpose: The puppet demonstrates the need that will be met in today s lesson. The scripts are not written verbatim, but give a story line in which the group leader can interact with the puppet. The children are introduced to the Take Home Point and then interact with God s word as they experience the Bible event. Puppet Presentation: Purpose: The puppet demonstrates the need that will be met in today s lesson. The scripts are not written verbatim, but give a story line in which the group leader can interact with the puppet. Someone backstage shakes the sheet of metal or poster board to make the sound of thunder while another flashes a beam of light in a dimmed room. Judy comes out holding a blanket and cowering. The lightening and thunder scare her. She heard that lightening can cause a fire and she doesn t want her house to go up in flames. The presenter tells Judy that lightening and fire are ways God shows his power. A God who is powerful enough to make lightening and fire is powerful enough to protect his children and their homes. In today s Bible event, God shows his power by taking Elijah to heaven in a fiery chariot without Elijah burning. God also shows his power by taking care of us. What a powerful God! The greatest way God showed his power was by becoming a baby Baby Jesus. When Jesus became a man, he died on the cross for our sins. Some are the things we choose to do that are wrong. Jesus took our punishment on himself and then he came alive again. What a powerful God! Because Jesus died for us, God will someday take us to heaven. God is not only powerful, but he also loves. A God like that loves Judy and will take care of her when she is scared. The presenter teaches Judy the Take Home Point. *GOD IS AWESOME God shows me his power. After practicing the Take Home Point with Judy several times, the presenter teaches it to the children. Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 9-3

Bible Event: Video Test your sound and video system beforehand. Cue the video to its precise beginning. For larger groups of children (15 or more), use a large screen TV or imager. Dim the lights before starting the video. To introduce a video, you might read from a Bible storybook and leave off the ending, inviting the children to see what happens by watching the video. You could also introduce the video by inviting the children to keep an eye out for special actions or words they will see during it. Purpose: The Bible event is written in a creative fashion so children can recall major points of the event. The Take Home Point is reinforced. The leader says the first part of the Take Home Point and the children respond with their phrase. Show the video to the children, starting just after the lead in to the video (cue:45 seconds) and ending after Elisha crosses the Jordan River for the second time and the other prophets say, Can anyone doubt that this is now the Lord s prophet? Praise the Lord! (Cue: 6:27.) Review the ways in which God showed his power to Elijah, Elisha, and the other prophets. (By parting the Jordan River twice and by taking Elijah up to heaven in a fiery chariot.) Practice the Take Home Point with the children. * GOD IS AWESOME God shows me his power. End with a brief prayer. Thank God for showing us his power through Elijah and Elisha, by taking care of us and, most important, by coming to earth as baby Jesus and dying on the cross so that he can someday take us to heaven. Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 9-4

Small Group Application: (30 minutes) Purpose: Smaller groups enable children to develop closer relationships with adults and peers in the church. As you reinforce the Take Home Point with a fun hands-on activity, discuss the Bible event. Be sure to repeat the Take Home Point several times. Say the first part and have the children respond with the second phrase. Application questions help kids apply the Take Home Point to their daily lives. Close this session by gathering your small group for prayer. Let the kids pray! During the small group application time, discuss the following questions and points: How did God show his power to Elijah and Elisha? (By parting the Jordan River and by taking Elijah up to heaven in a fiery chariot.) How does God show his power to us? (Answers will vary, but stress that God uses his power to care for us. The best way God shows us his power is through Jesus death and resurrection.) How does it make you feel to know that God is powerful? (Answers will vary.) Activity 1: Elijah s Coat Craft As the children decorate the square of fabric as Elijah s coat, remind the children that both Elijah and Elisha used the coat to part the Jordan River. But it was not the coat, or even Elijah or Elisha, that parted the river. God's power parted the river. How does God show us his power? After the children are finished, they can use Elijah s coat to dramatize the crossing of the Jordan River. Practice the Take Home Point. * GOD IS AWESOME God shows us his power. Activity 2: Chariot of Fire Snack Have the children make a chariot of fire by sticking a pretzel in the center of half a Twinkie and using a plastic knife or craft stick to dab the Twinkie with blobs of red frosting. As the children work, review the Bible event. How did God show his power through Elijah and Elisha? How does God show us his power? Practice the Take Home Point, * GOD IS AWESOME God shows us his power. Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 9-5

HEALTHY SNACK OPTION: Choose a God-given food like apples or celery. After the children eat their snack and clean up after themselves, ask them where their snack went? Talk about how Elijah couldn t be found after God took him home, just like their snack is all gone! Activity 3: Coat, Coat, Who s Got the Coat? Game To play: 1. Have the children stand in a circle. One child is It and is in the center of the circle. 2. It closes his eyes, while the shepherd goes around the outside of the circle touching the hands of different children before secretly hiding the coat in one child s hand. 3. The shepherd tells It to open his eyes. 4. After opening his eyes, It chants, Coat, coat, who s got the coat? He then has three chances to guess which child is hiding the coat. (If the group is smaller, It may have only one or two guesses.) 5. After It takes a guess, the child who was guessed opens both hands in front of her body. 6. If It guesses correctly, he changes places with the child who had the coat. 7. If It does not guess correctly, he remains in the center. Alternative Game: If your group is too small to play this activity, hide the coat under one of three bowls turned upside down. Mix the bowls around quickly, several times. Have children take turns guessing which bowl the coat is under. After playing the game, point out to the children that, just as the shepherd gave away the coat, Elijah gave his coat to Elisha. But God gave his power to Elisha. It was by God s power that both Elijah and Elisha were able to part the river and it was by God s power that Elijah was able to go to heaven in the fiery chariot. In the same way, it is by the power of Jesus forgiveness that we will someday be able to go to heaven. Practice the Take Home Point. * GOD IS AWESOME God shows us his power. Prayer Time: Pass around the coat used during the game. As each child gets the coat, have him or her thank God for one way in which God shows us his power. End by thanking God for sending Jesus. (Hint: If a child is too shy to pray, it is okay for him or her to pass.) Safety and Security: Safety and security procedures are important for each church to carefully define and implement according to their unique needs. The security, safety, illness and accident procedures described in this curriculum are provided for example purposes only and may not be appropriate, applicable or adequate for every situation. Each church is responsible for determining whether any security, safety, illness and accident procedures contained in the curriculum are appropriate, applicable or adequate for its unique situation. The activities described in this curriculum require adult supervision and may not be suitable for each child and each situation. Each church is responsible for ensuring that adequate adult supervision is provided for all activities and for determining whether an activity is appropriate for each child and each situation. Large Group Wrap-Up: (10 minutes) Purpose: The crazy bird puppet, Albie, struggles with learning the Take Home Point. The leader shows an example of each small group application activity from this lesson and says the first phrase of the Take Home Point. The kids respond with their phrase. They try to teach the puppet the Take Home Point, but each time he confuses words or concepts. After three attempts, he finally gets it right and sings the correct Take Home Point in a silly opera-like voice. Singing: (Optional) Lesson Review with Puppet Skit: Presenter shows Albie a craft made in Activity 1. Then the kids attempt to teach Albie the Take Home Point. Presenter says to kids: God is awesome Kids say: God shows us his power. Presenter says to Albie: God is awesome Albie says: I have a cool new coat! Presenter shows an example of the next activity done in small group and repeats first phrase to kids. The kids say the correct response trying to teach Albie the Take Home Point. Continue in this manner with the presenter showing example of each activity. Here are Albie s responses: Albie s response to Activity 2 sample: Twinkie (drooling ) Twinkies gimme, gimme, gimme. Albie s response to Activity 3 sample: God shows me the powder puff girls. Presenter says: Albie, listen one last time. God is awesome Kids say: God shows us his power. Presenter says to Albie: God is awesome Albie s response: (Warms up his singing voice with Mee, mee, mee, mee, mee and sings in a silly dramatic opera-like voice) God is awesome-god shows us his power. Welcome guests and thank them for attending. Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 9-7
