An Ancient-Future Faith Community Liturgy April 24, 2016 (Fifth Sunday of Easter) GATHERING Alleluia! Christ is risen! Alleluia! He is risen indeed! The Messiah is Lord over all creation, the Savior of the world! Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights! Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, all His host! Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you shining stars! Praise Him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for He commanded and they were created. He established them forever and ever; He fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. Praise the LORD from the earth, all creatures and all nature! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and women alike, old and young together! Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven. He has raised up a horn for His people, praise for all His faithful. Praise the LORD! from Psalm 148 St. Peter Preaching in Jerusalem, Masolino da Panicale, c. 1426

All Creatures of Our God and King All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice and with us sing: Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise Him! O praise Him! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, Ye clouds that sail in heav n along: O praise Him! Alleluia! Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice; Ye lights of evening, find a voice. O praise Him! O praise Him! Let all things their Creator bless, And worship Him in humbleness: O praise Him! Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One. O praise Him! O praise Him! Text: St. Francis of Assisi, transl. William H. Draper. Music: Geistliche Kirchengesänge, Cologne, 1623; hymn tune: LASST UNS ERFREUEN. INVOCATION Prayers of welcome and praise The Basis of Blessing, Soichi Watanabe, Co 2

Of the Father s Love Begotten O ye heights of heav n, adore Him; Angel hosts, His praises sing; Pow rs, dominions, bow before Him And extol our God and King; Let no tongue on earth be si--lent; every voice in concert ring, Evermore and evermore. Christ, to Thee with God the Father, And, O Holy Ghost, to Thee, Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving, And unwearied praises be: Honor, glory, and domin--ion, and eternal victory, Evermore and evermore. Amen. Text: Aurelius C. Prudentius, 4 th century; transl. by John M. Neale and Henry W. Baker. Music: Plainsong, 13 th century. Arr: C. Winifred Douglas PROFESSION OF FAITH This is the message of life as preached by the apostle Peter. Let us together affirm his testimony: God shows no partiality: But in every nation anyone who fears Him and does what is right is accepted by Him. This is the message God sent, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And yet they put Him to death by hanging Him on a tree. But God raised Him to life on the third day and revealed Him to those who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with Him after He rose from the dead. He is the One ordained by God as Judge of the living and the dead. Of Him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name. based on Acts 10:34-43 3

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall all know Me, for I will forgive their iniquity and remember their sins no more. Jeremiah 31:33-34 [Silence] Most merciful God, You have loved us with a love beyond our understanding, and You have set us on paths of righteousness for Your name s sake. Yet too often we have strayed from your way. [Silent confessions] We confess that we have sinned: We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in Your will, and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen. The Jesus Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me, a sinner. Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison, Lord Jesus, have mercy on me. 2002 Petaluma Music; Setting by David Baker Used by permission. 4

ASSURANCE OF PARDON The word of the Lord, trustworthy and true: Behold, I am making all things new. To the thirsty, I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. I will be their God, and they shall be My children. from Revelation 21:5-7 In Christ, we who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He himself is our peace. And He has made both Jews and Gentiles into one new humanity, reconciling them in His death on the cross. from Ephesians 2:13-16 I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Ezekiel 37: 26-27 TIME OF OFFERING Reflections on God s gifts and faithfulness We Bow Down You are Lord of creation and Lord of my life, Lord of the land and the sea. You were Lord of the heavens before there was time, And Lord of all lords You will be. We bow down and we worship You, Lord, We bow down and we worship You, Lord, We bow down and we worship You, Lord, Lord of all lords You will be. You are King of creation and King of my life, King of the land and the sea. You were King of the heavens before there was time, And King of all kings You will be. We bow down and we crown You the King, (3 times) King of all kings You will be. CCLI Song #20003. 1984 New Spring. Twila Paris. CCLI License # 3097801 5

THE WORD Acts 11:1-18 Revelation 21:1-6 John 12:31-35 THE TABLE Remembering the Body of Christ John Watches the Descent of the New Jerusalem, 14 th Century Tapestry The Lord be with you! And also with you! Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. The Lord s Prayer (sung) Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your Name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, On earth as in heav n. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins As we forgive those who sin against us; Save us from the time of trial, And deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, And the glory are Yours. Now and forever, Amen. Setting by Eric Wyse; 2000 Wildgrove Music (BMI) 6

Behold the Lamb Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us: And we remember The promise made that all who come in faith Find forgiveness at the cross. So, we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of peace Around the table of the King. The body of our Savior, Jesus Christ, torn for you: Eat and remember The wounds that heal, the death that brings us life, Paid the price to make us one. So, we share in this Bread of Life, And we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of love Around the table of the King. The blood that cleanses ev ry stain of sin, shed for you: Drink and remember He drained death s cup that all may enter in To receive the life of God. So, we share in this Bread of Life And we drink of His sacrifice, As a sign of our bonds of grace Around the table of the King. And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond, And to remember Our call to follow in the steps of Christ As His body here on earth. As we share in His suffering, We proclaim: Christ will come again! And we ll join in the feast of heav n Around the table of the King. CCLI Song #5003372; 2007 Thankyou Music. Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, Stuart Townend. 7

SENDING FORTH The Life of the Body All Creatures of Our God and King (doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below: O Praise Him! Alleluia! Praise Him above, ye heav nly hosts; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. O praise Him! O praise Him! Benediction: I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord. Because He has triumphed over death, and Christ the Messiah is Lord over all creation, Savior to the entire world, you also live. Alleluia! Amen! Since we have been raised with Christ, let us now go forth as His witnesses, loving and serving Him in the joy and victorious power of His resurrection. Amen. Thanks be to God! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! A thought about worship from the Ancient Fathers The Lord redeemed us by his own blood, and gave his soul for our souls, and his flesh for our bodies, and poured out the Spirit of the Father to bring about the union and communion of God and man bringing God down to men by [the working of] the Spirit, and again raising man to God by his incarnation and by his coming firmly and truly [gave] us incorruption, by our communion with God.
