Requiescat in Pace Grand Prior Emeritus Schulte Dead at 89 Former New Orleans Archbishop H.E. Francis Bible Schulte, KC*HS, died Sunday January 17 at a Churchrun facility in his native Philadelphia after a long illness. He served the Southeastern Lieutenancy as Grand Prior for nine years and upon his retirement, he remained a loyal and devoted member of our Order. Archbishop Schulte was appointed to the New Orleans See by Pope St. John Paul II in 1989. He had previously served as Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and as Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston in West Virginia. He served the people of New Orleans until his retirement in 2002. Archbishop Schulte had previously served as Superintendent of Education in Philadelphia and he took a strong interest in Catholic education during his tenure in New Orleans. His immediate successor, Archbishop Alfred Hughes, credited Archbishop Schulte with bringing an organizational structure to the archdiocese which required little adjustment when he took over. New Orleans was unique in that at one time there were four living archbishops. Pictured right are Archbishops Hughes, Schulte, Hannan and current Archbishop Aymond. A funeral Mass was celebrated for Archbishop Schulte at St. Louis Cathedral on January 28. 3
