Q) When was fasting obligated? Ans: 2 Hijri. Q) Which events happened in Ramadan? Ans: Quran was revealed, Battle of Badr, Fateh Makkah. Q) Which verse of the Quran says that fasting is compulsory? Q) Does this mean that a person who has done Umrah in Ramadan, does not need to do Hajj? Ans: No. Hajj is a pillar of Islam and has to be done. When are they? Ans: One at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. Q) If a girl reaches puberty at an early age, does fasting become compulsory on her? Quran was revealed on this night, Jibrael (a.s) descends with a company of angels who invoke blessings on whoever is worshipping. Taraweeh Q) Is Taraweeh Fardh? Ans: It is Sunnah. Ans: Permissible but not recommended [View supported by Ayesha (R)]. A copy of Quran can be held in hand during prayer during Nafeel Salah only, not in Fardh. Rulings regarding Fasting Q) What is the ruling regarding the fasts of people who are travelling or are sick? Page 10 of 17

Ans: Traveling and sick people are excused from fasting, but if they fast, it is accepted. If they leave the fast, they have to keep it later. Q) What is the expiation of breaking a fast? Ans: Either of the three: -1- Freeing a slave. -2- Fasting for 2 continuous months. -3- Feeding 60 people. Q) What is true regarding the person who misses a fast of Ramadan without a valid excuse? Ans: He cannot make up for the loss even if he fasts his entire life. Q) If a fast was missed in Ramadan due to a valid excuse, when must it be made up? Page 11 of 17

Ans: Before the next Ramadan. If not made up within 1 year, then the person is not only required to make up that fast, but additionally has to feed people. Q) What is the ransom of feeding a person for one fast? Ans: About Half Sa'. Or Two Mudd. Or around 1.5 kg. Q) Is it allowed to get married in Ramadan? Ans: Yes. Q) Mention a few things that DOESN'T break your fast. Ans. Blood tests, vomiting due to sickness, swallowing your saliva, applying perfume, applying oil on hair/body, tasting food by the tip of the tongue only, ear drops, eye drops, brushing teeth, injection (Insulin, Vaccine, Painkiller, Anesthetic), inhalers, nose bleed, removing a tooth, using cosmetics, miswaak, cutting hair or nails, taking a shower. Q) Mention a few things that BREAK your fast. Ans. Body nourishing IV injection, blood donation, cigarettes, cupping, forceful and deliberate vomiting. Q) Can one fast on a journey? Ans. Yes, but it is not a pious thing to do. Q) Fasting is Haraam on 5 days, during the entire year. When are they? Ans: -1-1st Shawwal (Eid-ul-Fitr). -2-10th Dhul hijjah (Eid-ud-Duha). -3-11th Dhul hijjah (Ayyam-e-Tashreeq, the three days following Eid-ud-Duha). -4-12th Dhul hijjah (Ayyam-e-Tashreeq, the three days following Eid-ud-Duha). -5-13th Dhul hijjah (Ayyam-e-Tashreeq, the three days following Eid-ud-Duha). Q) What is the "day of doubt"? Is it permissible to fast on it? Ans: 30th Shaban - a day before Ramadan begins. Fasting is prohibited on this day. [Except if it comes in your fasting routine (like Monday or a missed up fast of last Ramadan)]. Q) What is Al-Wisal? What is the ruling regarding it? Ans: Fasting 2 days at the stretch without taking Suhur in between. Muhammad (S) did that. We are not allowed to do. Voluntary fasts Q) Which fasting is known as the fasting of Dawood (a.s)? Q) On which days of the week is fasting recommended, as deeds are presented to Allah on these days? Ans: Mondays and Thursdays. Q) What is the ruling of fasting on Friday? Ans. Singling out Friday for fasting is not allowed. Should also fast either on Thursday or Saturday along with Friday. Q) What is Ayyam-ul-Beed? Ans: 13th, 14th and 15th of every lunar month. Q) In which month other than Ramadan, did Muhammad (S) fast the most? Ans: Shaban. Page 15 of 17

Q) Muhammad (S) encouraged people to keep fasts in which months? Ans: In the 4 forbidden months of Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, Rajab. Q) The fasting of which days can give you reward of fasting the whole year? Ans: 6 days of Shawwal. Q) Should fasting the 6 days of Shawwal be continuous? Ans: No, not necessarily. Q) Which fasting will forgive a person s previous year s sins and the coming year s sins? Ans: 9th Dhul Hijjah. Page 16 of 17

Q) Who is prohibited from Fasting on 9th Dhul Hijjah? Ans: Hajj pilgrims who are in Arafah on that day. Q) What is Aashura? Ans: The fast of 10th Muharram. Allah gave victory to Musa (a.s) from Firaun on that day. Muslims are instructed to fast either on 9th or 11th along with 10th to differ from Jews. Q) What should a person do if he breaks a voluntary fast intentionally? Ans: He is not required to repeat or makeup that fast. Neither is he required to give charity or repent. A person can break a voluntary fast without any excuse. (But it should not be the fast making up of missed or incomplete Ramadan fast!) Page 17 of 17
