The Walk to Emmaus... Message from Rev. Lea The Walk to Emmaus is based on the story in Luke 24:13-35, which provides the image for the three-day experience and follow-up. Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. (Luke 24:13-16) The Walk to Emmaus is our opportunity to rediscover this story as we slowly walk with the disciples learning, hearing, and interacting with these events again. The walk to Emmaus is a three day experience much like the journey these disciples went on with Jesus. For the disciples, Jesus was revealed to them again in a new way: When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" (Luke 24:30-32) When they had been walking with them, or going about their normal lives, they had not noticed, or forgotten, who Jesus really was. We, much like the disciples, need to be reminded of who Jesus really is in our lives. We need to slow down long enough to hear the familiar words, to reconnect NFUMC Services Sunday Adult Sunday School: 9:45 am Worship Service: 11:00 am Nursery and Children s Worship (Pre K to Grade 3): 11:00 am Tuesday 6:00 pm The Wesleyan Way: Faith that Matters Wednesday 6:00 pm: A.C.T.S.
