COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY February 25, 2018 2nd Sunday in Lent ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Morning Reflection Though people may turn their backs on us, you do not hide your face from us. Though others may try to take away our hope, you assure us of that future waiting for us. You speak your name and it is enough. When we try to dictate our fears to you, you invite us to follow you into self-denial and service. As we struggle to shape our lifestyle to yours, you carry us with you wherever we go. You speak your good news, Teacher of open hearts, and it is enough. Though we have done nothing to earn them, you pour out the gifts of grace and mercy upon us. When we stumble over our lack of trust, you set us back on our feet, to follow you into the kingdom. You speak your peace, Breath of Holiness, and it is enough. Prelude Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet or fill out a yellow welcome card located in the pews. The card can be placed in the offering place. Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one. (Please stand for items marked with an asterisk. GTG is the purple Glory to God hymnal. STF is the Sing the Faith smaller blue hymnal)

Centering Music - Called As Partners in Christ s Service GTG #761 Congregation sings verse 1 Call to Worship Leader: The season of Lent is a journey towards the events of Holy Week and the reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. People: On this journey, we have time to consider what we need to serve God and our world as we truly live out the good news and share God s light. Leader: We have the opportunity to examine the burdens we carry and sort through what necessary and what is separating us from God and each other, leaving the latter behind. People: We are called to leave behind our regrets, grudges and grievances. Leader: On this Lenten journey, we will confront the present challenges with faith, look to the future with hope, and leaving the past behind. People: May the light of Christ shine bright as together we worship God with joy and thanksgiving and focus on living as people of faith, hope and compassion. *Hymn - Open the Eyes of My Heart GTG #452 tune - Open the Eyes Prayer of Confession (unison) God of our ancestors in the faith, we are a people who have known the hurt of broken promises, and have spoken words we could not keep. We are quick to condemn those who make wrong choices, but want only gentle criticism directed our way. We let our lives be guided so much by our past, rather than opening our eyes, our hearts, our hopes to your amazing future. Forgive our distrust of the vows you have made to us, God of Sa rah. Forgive our disbelief that you can bring hope to those places where we see only despair, God of Abraham. Forgive our hesitancy in denying all that keeps us from committing ourselves completely to you, God of Peter. Forgive us, so we may take up the life you offer to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen Time for silent confession and reflection.

Words of Assurance Leader: Listen carefully, dear friends. God does not reject us, God redeems us. God does not back out of the relationship that was created so long ago, God restores it to its original purpose. God does not hold back, but pours abundant forgiveness into our lives. People: Forgiven, we can follow; filled with hope, we can empty ourselves for others; restored to new life, we can live in relationship with God, with our neighbors and enemies, with ourselves. Thanks be to God. Amen. *Response - The Church s One Foundation GTG #450 Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word; I ever with thee and though with me Lord; Thou my soul s shelter, and thou my high tower; Raise thou me heaven-ward, O Power of my power. *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. PROCLAIM GOD S WORD Children s Call - Come All Ye Children All please stand and join in singing and playing instruments Children s Sermon (Children and youth up through 5th grade may leave for Sunday School during the singing of this hymn.) Anthem - Amazing Grace by Chris Tomlin Will Powell, piano Old Testament Lesson - Genesis 17:1-7, 15-16 (pages 12-13) *Hymn - Great in Thy Faithfullness GTG #39 tune - Faithfulness Gospel Lesson - Mark 8:31-38 (page 919)

Sermon Our Response to Unsafe Moments Rev. Jen Fox RESPONSE TO THE WORD A Word From the Pew Offering We approach God just as we are but God doesn t want us to stay as we are. Through prayer, service and giving, we can experience God s transforming love. As disciples, we are to consider what we offer God through our time, talent and financial offerings not as owners of these items but as caretakers, returning a portion of what we have received from God. Musical Meditation - Instrumental *Doxology Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow GTG #606 Prayer of Dedication Glorious God, we dedicate these gifts as an expression of our faith. You alone know how much we share and how much we withhold. You know the extent of our trust and the depth of our commitment. May this act of giving draw us closer to you and extend a blessing to all who are helped through our sharing. Amen. Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Prayers of thanksgiving, intercession, petition All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

GO IN GOD S NAME *Hymn - Standing on the Promises GTG #838 tune - Promises *Benediction *Choral Benediction - God Be with You Till We Meet Again *Postlude Go Forward and Serve!
