May God renew and lift you up as you worship today! Greeting & Announcements: - Greeting - Saying good morning to one another - A few announcements before we get going: o Call meeting July 18 @ 7pm o Counterfeit Gods Books are available in the Bookstore in the office for $10 if you have paid, it should be in your member mailbox if ordered, please pay. o OTHER: o OTHER: WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD (WL:) Today we begin a journey to allow God to expose the idols in our heart. While the first commandment: You shall have no other gods is perhaps easy to memorize, but challenging to really apply consistently. More introduction to the series will be in the message so I will save it for then. For now, let s focus our hearts to worship both asking and affirming that the Lord God is My All in all. SONG: You Are My All In All You are my strength When I am weak You are the treasure That I seek You are my all in all Seeking You as a precious jew'l Lord to give up I'd be a fool You are my all in all 1

Jesus Lamb of God Jesus Lamb of God Taking my sin My cross my shame Rising again I bless Your name You are my all in all When I fall down You pick me up When I am dry You fill my cup You are my all in all Jesus Lamb of God Jesus Lamb of God Jesus Lamb of God Jesus Lamb of God CCLI Song # 825356 Dennis Jernigan 1991 Shepherd's Heart Music, Inc. (Admin. by PraiseCharts Publishing, Inc.) [BLANK SLIDE: We pause to confess our sins.] TRANSITION (WL): While we know that the Lord is God and the God of the Bible is the true God, to keep God at the front of all we are and do is a challenge. While it s hard to admit, you will see that counterfeit gods creep into our lives subtly and sometimes without us knowing. We allow our significance to come from our performance. We determine our security based on our career or financial security. We can allow our relationships to trump our relationship to the Lord and we can allow our passions and interests to supersede our passion and interest in the Lord. We have to admit that idols form in our hearts and replace what only God can give. As we sing the next song, let your heart confess your idols and ask God s forgiveness to remove the false and replace it with the truth of who He is and who we are. 2

SONG: Remind Me Who I Am When I lose my way And I forget my name Remind me who I am In the mirror all I see Is who I don't want to be Remind me who I am In the loneliest places When I can't remember what grace is Tell me once again Who I am to You who I am to You Tell me lest I forget Who I am to You that I belong to You to You When my heart is like a stone And I'm running far from home Remind me who I am When I can't receive Your love Afraid I'll never be enough Remind me who I am If I'm Your beloved Can You help me believe it Tell me once again Who I am to You who I am to You Tell me lest I forget Who I am to You that I belong to You to You I'm the one You love I'm the one You love That will be enough I'm the one You love Tell me once again Who I am to You who I am to You Tell me lest I forget Who I am to You that I belong to You 3

Nothing Is Wasted Music (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.) Spirit Nashville Three (Admin. by Spirit Music Group) [BLANK SLIDE: We rejoice to receive forgiveness!] TRANSITION (WL): Nothing in all creation can replace the love God has for you. Nothing in all creation can provide forgiveness like Jesus does. Nothing in all creation can give you strength of faith like the Spirit does. Your Father in heaven wants you to know that although we at times put him second or more in our list of priorities, his love for you is always first priority. Your salvation and forgiveness is his passion. In spite of our sin, he tells you today: Your sins are forgiven! Live in the forgiveness he gives always putting him first in your life. AMEN. WE LISTEN TO THE WORD OF GOD [BLANK SLIDE: We LISTEN to the Word of God.] TRANSITION (WL): Our life of faith is not without trial. It is not without sin. It is not without Satan s traps that entangle us and cause us to lose our focus on Jesus. Yet God desires the wellbeing of our souls and so he allows challenge to come into our lives to discipline us bring us back to following the Lord more closely. First Lesson: Hebrews 12:1-8 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, My son, do not make light of the Lord s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son. 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined- and everyone undergoes discipline- then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 4

TRANSITION (WL): Our reading from the Gospel of Matthew puts Jesus in the middle of a conversation where he is asked which of the commands is the most important. He affirms our love for the Lord is more important than any religious activity. Second Lesson: Mark 12:28-34 The Greatest Commandment 28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, Of all the commandments, which is the most important? 29 The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. 32 Well said, teacher, the man replied. You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. Children s Message All the young children in attendance today are invited down to the front for a children s message. He said to him, Abraham! Here I am, he replied. 2 Then God said, Take your son, your only son, whom you love- Isaac- and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you. 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you. 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, Father? Yes, my son? Abraham replied. The fire and wood are here, Isaac said, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? 8 Abraham answered, God himself will provide the 6

lamb for the burnt offering, my son. And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, Abraham! Abraham! Here I am, he replied. 12 Do not lay a hand on the boy, he said. Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son. 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided. 15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me. 19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba. WE RESPOND TO THE WORD OF GOD Confession of Faith: The First Commandment, Martin Luther s Large Catechism All: The First Commandment: You shall have no other gods. That is: You shall have and worship Me alone as your God. What is the force of this, and how is it to be understood? What does it mean to have a god? What is God? Answer: A god means that from which we are to expect all good and to which we are to take refuge in all distress, so that to have a God is nothing else than to trust and believe Him from the whole heart; as I have often said that the confidence and faith of the heart alone make both God and an idol. If your faith and trust be right, then is your god also true; and, on the other hand, if your trust be false and wrong, then you have not the true God; for these two belong together, faith and God. That now, I say, upon which you set your heart and put your trust is properly your god. 7

Therefore it is the intent of this commandment to require true faith and trust of the heart which settles upon the only true God, and clings to Him alone. That is as much as to say: "See to it that you let Me alone be your God, and never seek another." Whatever you lack of good things, expect it of Me, and look to Me for it, and whenever you suffer misfortune and distress, creep and cling to Me. I, yes, I, will give you enough and help you out of every need; only let not your heart cleave to or rest in any other. Thank-offering Our financial offerings are another part of our worship life and a heartfelt expression of gratitude to the Lord who is the giver of all we have. You may request to keep them private, or to have them shared with the congregation for encouragement. [BLANK SLIDE: PRAYER ] Prayer: Spoken by pastor LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours now and forever. Amen. WE DEPART TO SERVE GOD [BLANK SLIDE: BLESSING] BLESSING (WL): As you go from worship today, the Lord, the true God does what no other god can do: truly bless you. 8

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with his favor and give you peace. Amen TRANSITION (WL): When it comes to the bottom line what no other god can do is rescue us from what our sins deserve and secure heaven. Why God wants to expose and remove counterfeit gods from our lives is so we enjoy his blessing of salvation for eternity enjoy singing this truth in our closing song!
