P R I N C E OF P E A C E L U T H E R A N C H U R C H VOLUME XI, ISSUE VIII AUGUST 2018 Hope Does Not Disappoint But we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. ~ Romans 5:3-5 I write this article still waiting for our daughter to be born. I hope that by the time you read this, she will be here and that she will be healthy and happy. I hope that we will be settling into a routine at home and learning what being new parents really looks like. I hope that you will soon all have an opportunity to meet her. At the same time, I hope that summer at Prince of Peace continues to go well and that you all have a chance to relax and enjoy the summer in some ways. I hope that the fall gets underway well, and that there is a great celebration as we begin a new program year. I hope to return with new learning, new understandings, and a sense of life as I have never known it sometime in October. Hope is a powerful thing. It is more than wishful thinking, more than unsubstantiated expectations. Hope is about trusting promises and expecting the unexpected, even when it seems impossible. Hope is about being in one situation and still seeing a different outcome. That outcome may not come easily, and it may require hard work, but hope is still expecting to get to that outcome. In the verse above, Paul talks about that hope is born through suffering and endurance. It is not easy to get to hope. It is not easy to allow hope to pull us through the difficult times, but it is one way we make it through. And most importantly that hope does not disappoint us. I have been doing a lot of hoping lately, and I hope that you too have many hopes for the rest of the summer and the fall. And I hope that your hope brings you through the difficult times, and reminds you always that our ultimate hope lies in God s love for us. I was just blessed to have a week of continuing education, 4 days of which I engaged in reading and thinking about a book a day. Three of the days I read works on leading the church through these challenging, changing times. Each of the works utilized a metaphor. Canoeing the Mountains told the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition who expected to pole and paddle their way to the Pacific Ocean until they ran into the Continental Divide and the vast mountain ranges that stood in their path. How do you carry on when you are prepared and equipped for river travel and now are faced with a completely different set of circumstances? Our Iceberg Is Melting is actually a business management book on 8 steps to significant change, built on the fable of a community of penguins that find their iceberg home endangered. Again, how do you move an organization into uncharted waters effectively? Finally, in A Door Set Open the author uses the image of an open door leading to a new, mission-filled world and all of the forces that work to keep us stuck looking at the opening but resisting walking through the open door. There was a lot to digest but to get us thinking about how to get focused on our mission (a key component in all the books) here is a little exercise you might try. It is called a Mission Statement of Conviction. Only 8 words are allowed, and it must be in the format of verb, target, outcome. We have a great 16 word Purpose Statement but can we give it a laser focus on what we are about and what will drive us forward? Think about it. Pray about it. And let me know your ideas for a Mission Statement of Conviction. * I look forward to hearing and seeing your ideas. PAGE 3 YOUTH NEWS FOR AUGUST 2018 Clown Troupe Clown troupe is in full swing! Rehearsal times are from 7pm to 9pm on Sunday evenings unless otherwise noted. Rehearsals Look for information about upcoming rehearsals in your text messages. We are planning on having one rehearsal a month for the rest of the summer. Sr. High Youth Group We will be planning at least one youth event each month through the school year. These events will fall on a variety of different days and will often be fun activities or service opportunities. It should be a great year! Future Activities I will be on maternity leave for August and September, so I won t be planning any youth group activities during that time. If some of the youth would like to suggest some activities and find some chaperons, it would be great to keep meeting! I will see you in October!!! FOOD SHARING Food collection for The Little Food Pantry at PoP will take place on the 1st Sunday of each month. Faces of Faith During the month of August we are recognizing Robin Domm as our Faces of Faith person. Robin was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She is a life-long Lutheran, baptized and confirmed in the same Lutheran church in Baltimore. Robin graduated high school and then attended college at Towson St. University in the Baltimore area. She received her BS degree in Health Administration in 1983. She has an MS degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. Robin enlisted in the Army in 1981 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1983. In the service, she served as an operations and logistics officer in the Medical Services Corp. This duty brought her engagement and experience in the States and overseas on many humanitarian missions. In 1995, Robin came to be stationed in Clifton Park so she could be near her husband who was a full time Army National Guard helicopter pilot. After 23 years of devoted service she retired in 2004. Since 2007 Robin has been working for Northeast Home Medical Equipment as Manager, Warehouse and Distribution. Once Robin and her husband, Joe Weiser, settled in Clifton Park, it didn t take long to find Prince of Peace Church. Robin found POP to be welcoming and friendly. She soon became involved in church ministries and activities, starting out as a Communion bread server. Currently, she is a Deacon, Church Council member and Offering Counter. Outside of POP, Robin is an avid reader, has two rescue dogs and is currently learning to ride horses. She also works with rescue horses. Robin has recently taken up finger crocheting. She is an avid scuba diver and has spent time in exotic places scuba diving. Robin has some fascinating pictures of underwater landscapes and sea life. Just ask her about her many travel destinations. Robin takes every occasion to visit family in Maryland. Give Robin a big hug for volunteering of her time and talents to PoP and country. THE HOLY ROLLERS have some important questions for you! Do you have access to a working bicycle? Do you like fresh air and sunshine? Excellent! Reserve these dates as we are planning rides for both August 11 and September 15. On August 11 we will ride from Glens Falls to Lake George. We will meet at Cove Park in Glens Falls at 9:00 a.m.. The GHG footprint is made up of contributions from many different sources. In the previous article the portion of the GHG footprint from electricity usage was presented (about 14 tons of carbon dioxide, or CO2, per year). Electricity usage is usually one of the first sources associated with a footprint, but there are several other that should also be accounted for when looking at the bigger picture. This month, we will be writing about water usage. How does water usage contribute to the GHG footprint? Since the building is mostly supplied with water from the City of Clifton Park, energy is used by the Water Authority to pump it and treat it for us. Energy is also used to heat the water, but that will be accounted for in a different category. Water also uses energy once goes to the sewer too. Energy is used to treat waste water at sewage treatment plant before it is discharged too. The amount of energy used (and the CO2 footprint) for water supply and disposal depends on how much effort it takes to supply and treat the water. This can be as much as 18 pounds of CO2 for every 1000 gallons of water used. The church uses just more than 35,000 gallons of potable water per year from the city water authority. For this water the annual GHG footprint is just over 630 pounds of CO2 per year. The sprinkler system gets water directly from a well and uses almost 46,000 gallons of water per year but has a much lower energy intensity since it is only pumped up from the well (46 pounds of CO2 per year). So, the total GHG footprint from water use at the church is about 676 pounds of CO2 per year, almost 50 times smaller than the footprint for electricity that we wrote about in May. Although the GHG footprint for this water isn t too large compared the one for electricity, water conservation and preservation is very important. Ways to improve how we use water helps to keep the Church s water bills down, as well as conserve water for others to use. If you have ideas or interest for water reduction, please let someone from the facilities team know. All Fair Trade products buy direct from small farmers who grow products using ecologically sustainable farming practices. Their trading partner, Equal Exchange, donates $.20 for each pound of Fair Trade coffee, tea, & cocoa we sell.
