KEEPING THE YEAR NEW CMBC January 5, 2014 2 Chronicles 6:12 21; 7:12 16 The honesty in the Bible is at times startling. The Bible is very realistic about who we are and realistic about our frailty and failures. God knows that we sincerely promise to follow Him, but that we are pretty fickle in following through on those promises. And still God does not despair and give up on us. That is what we see in the story of Solomon s dedication of the temple. The building and final completion of the temple by Solomon was a big new start for the people of Israel. And in many respects, the New Year is a new start for us. So this story has some realism in it for us. There are a lot of similarities to our own lives and Solomon s dedication of the temple. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? [17] If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple. As you heard in the reading of the Scripture from 2 Chronicles, chapter 6 is Solomon s prayer and chapter 7 is God s response. Here is what we see: 1. A glorious vision of God 2. A vision that gets old 3. A renewed vision and promise 1. A GLORIOUS VISION OF GOD a. The supreme God 2 Chron. 6:14 O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. Vs.18 The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! Solomon was inviting God to dwell in this temple to meet them there It is just as amazing that we would consider that God would dwell in my heart and life in me!!! 1

2 Chron. 6:18 But will God really dwell on earth with men? Here it in this sinful earth, a place of conflict? Will He really? b. God chooses to dwell here i. Solomon builds the temple but it is God s dwelling place. 2 Chron. 7:12 I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices. Vs. 16 I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. ii. God has chosen to dwell in you. John 15:16 Jesus said, You did not choose me, but I have chosen you. c. Blessed by God i. Everything that is needed to carry out that vision is given by God. 2 Chron. 6:15 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it as it is today. God helps our lives to be filled with His glory ii. Solomon s prayer of faith believing God is there and hears 2 Chron. 16:19 21 Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence. [20] May your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, this place of which you said you would put your Name there. May you hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place. [21] Hear the supplications of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. 2. A VISION GETS OLD a. The extraordinary becomes ordinary i. This is what so often happens. Solomon is being very realistic. ii. 2 Chron. 6:21 Hear from heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive. 2

iii. [22] When a man wrongs his neighbor and is required to take an oath and he comes and swears the oath before your altar in this temple, [23] then hear from heaven and act. iv. [24] When your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you and when they turn back and confess your name, praying and making supplication before you in this temple, [25] then hear from heaven and forgive v. [26] When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray and confess your name and turn from their sin [27] then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, vi. [32] As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your great name and prays toward this temple, [33] then hear from heaven, vii. [36] When they sin against you for there is no one who does not sin b. The universal need for renewal i. It is a fact of life that things need renewal 1. Our gardens 2. Our homes 3. Even our bodies need sleep ii. It is a mistake to think that never is the case for us in our relationship with God c. Misinterpreting trials and the opportunity for renewal i. Elijah 1. Physical and emotional drain combined with discouragement 2. God s solution a. Rest b. A task of discipling get a vision ii. Peter 1. Wild and hectic turn of events threw him off track 2. God s solution a. Repentance 3

b. A reminder of acceptance c. A job to do feed m sheep get a vision iii. Paul s 1. Discouragement from Athens to Corinth 2. Acts 18:10 Do not be afraid. For I have many people in this city. 3. Get a vision 4. So Paul stayed iv. Church at Ephesus 1. Rev. 2:1 6 lost their first love 2. Had been very busy vs. 2-3 3. What we all need is... A RENEWED VISION AND PROMISE Here is the heart of renewal 2 Chronicles 7:13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, [14] if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. a. Be reminded who you are i. God s chosen place my people called by my name ii. Not your own b. Be reminded what God wants you to do i. Make sacrifices unto himself ii. Light of the world c. Be reminded His people i. Look around you. Renewal never comes alone. It always happens in community. ii. Renewal in your life brings renewal to the community, the church. d. Be reminded of God s Promise i. I will hear ii. I will forgive iii. I will heal 4

The old song written by Elizabeth Clephane and put to music by Ira Sankey, wonderfully pictures this truth. Here are the first and last verses of that song. There were ninety and nine that safely lay In the shelter of the fold. But one was out on the hills away, Far off from the gates of gold. Away on the mountains wild and bare. Away from the tender Shepherd's care. And all through the mountains, thunder riven And up from the rocky steep, There arose a glad cry to the gate of Heaven, "Rejoice! I have found My sheep!" And the angels echoed around the throne, "Rejoice, or the Lord brings back His own!" 5
