Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna (1769) by Johann Christian Brand (1722-1795) UNIVERSITY BAPTIST CHURCH

WORSHIP OF GOD IN CHRIST Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 24, 2017 11:00 a.m. CHIMES We sound three chimes, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, and centering us in the embrace of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCE Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. PRELUDE Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite/oh gratefully sing His Power and His Love (Hymn 16 Hanover tune)... Burkhardt LIGHTING THE CANDLES (We light the two candles on the communion table to remind us of the oneness of Christ with God and with humankind.) OPENING THE BIBLE (We open the Bible to remind us that God speaks to the people through the Holy Word.) ** CALL TO WORSHIP...adapted from Psalm 144:1-8 (NRSV) Leader: Come, let s praise God together! For God is great, and worthy of our praise! People: Let s tell stories of God s power and majesty, His mighty acts throughout history: Leader: For God is great, and worthy of our praise! People: Let s remember the compassion He has shown toward us; His mercy and unfailing love, generation after generation: Leader: For God is great, and worthy of our praise! People: Let s pass these stories along to our children and grandchildren, so that they, too, may come to know and love our God. Leader: For God is great, and worthy of our praise! People: Let s worship God together!

** HYMN 11 My God, How Wonderful You Are... AZMON ** INVOCATION WELCOME HYMN 344 Jesus Loves Me... CHINA (As we sing the last stanza of the hymn, the children are invited to come to the front for the Children s Sermon.) CHILDREN S SERMON (At the conclusion of the Children s Sermon, all children, kindergarten through grade two, are invited to attend Children s Church.) EPISTLE LESSON... Philippians 1:21-30 (NRSV) 21 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. 23 I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; 24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. 25 Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, 26 so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again. 27 Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, 28 and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God s doing. 29 For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well 30 since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! ** HYMN 282 Living for Jesus... LIVING MISSION MOMENT GOSPEL LESSON... Matthew 20:1-16 (NRSV) 1 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 When he went out about nine o clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; 4 and he said to them, You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. 5 When he went out again about noon and about three o clock, he did the same. 6 And about five o clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, Why are you standing here idle all day? 7 They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You also go into the vineyard. 8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going

to the first. 9 When those hired about five o clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. 10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, 12 saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. 13 But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? 14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous? 16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! ** HYMN 643 For the Fruit of All Creation... AR HYD Y NOS MORNING PRAYER ANTHEM Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy (see insert)... arr. Bass SERMON What is Fair? ANTHEM Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy... arr. Bass Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore! Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, love and power. He is able, He is able, He is willing, doubt no more! Let not conscience let you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; All the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, This he gives you, 'tis the Spirit's glimmering beam. Saints and angels joined in concert sing the praises of the Lamb! And the blissful seats of heaven sweetly echo with His name! Alleluia! Alleluia! Sinners here may do the same! SOLO Hear My Cry, O God... Franck Hear my cry, O God, attend unto my prayer; From the end of the earth will I cry unto Thee. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For Thou hast been a shelter for me and a strong tower from my enemy. When I cry unto God, then shall my enemies turn back; This I know, for God is for me! In God will I praise His Word, in God have I put my trust. Let my mouth be filled with praise, and with Thy honor all the day. Amen. (Psalm 61, KJV) WORSHIP LEADERS TODAY Matthew Tennant, Senior Minister Alba Beasley, Associate Minister for Music and Worship Will Brown, Associate Minister for Community Sarah Wilson, Youth Ministry Coordinator Barbara Moore, Organist Sanctuary Choir Laura Martindale, Soprano Dean Tennant, Amanda Ohlms, Readers Sally Chewning, Medical On Call UBC Mission Statement God has called University Baptist Church to minister to the University Community and to the residents of the Greater Charlottesville-Albemarle Community serving as agents of Christ s love and justice for those in need and offering a vital family of faith.

Our Goal: $3,000... Jesus said to Simon, Don t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people. So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Luke 5:10-11 (NIV) This offering supports ministries in and missionaries from Virginia. A portion of the money goes back to the local associations. Since the CVBA (Central Virginia Baptist Association) supports the chaplain ministry, that means our contributions will be supporting the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women. The annual offering for Virginia missions was named for Alma Hunt (1909-2008), a native Virginian who was known worldwide for her missions service and her unswerving dedication to the cause of Christ. Virginia Baptist Disaster Response Please join us in continuing to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Pray for the victims, the local officials, and for those who strive to be the hands and feet of God as they offer comfort and relief and begin the rebuilding process. Give financially. Make your check out to UBC and designate it for Harvey Flood Relief. Join with a friend, class, or group to make Flood Buckets & Hygiene Kits UBC will be an area collection center for Flood Buckets (cleaning supplies) and Hygiene Kits for Houston flood victims. Details and lists of supplies to put in the buckets and kits can be Toy Collection We are collecting new and gently used toys suitable for 4-year-old Iggy Staller. His family was a part of our congregation before moving to Houston. They had to evacuate during Hurricane Harvey, leaving behind many of Iggy s clothes and toys. You can leave toys outside the nursery or give gift cards to Judy Gough, who will see that the family receives the donations.

VENABLE BACKPACK MISSION PROJECT With school back in swing, the Venable Backpack Program is up and running again, providing a bag of food each Friday to elementary children who receive free lunch at school during the week, but don't have enough to eat at home over the weekends. The kids in our Children's Missions Program on Wednesday nights will be packing the bags to be delivered each week, so all we need to do is help provide the food! We are currently in need of the following types of food: Easy meals: mac-n-cheese, ramen noodles, Cup-o-Noodles, canned soup, canned chicken, Chef Boyardee, etc. Fruit: applesauce, individual servings of peaches/pears/mixed fruit, raisins Milk: shelf-stable milk in individual servings (like Horizon or Organic Valley) Juice: juice boxes, Caprisuns, or other juices in individual servings Other foods: individually-packaged breakfast items (cereal, protein bars, oatmeal, grits, etc) and individually-packaged snacks (packs of sandwich crackers, Goldfish, pretzels, popcorn, granola bars, etc.). We also need brown paper grocery bags to help package and deliver the food. Collection boxes will be located in the First Floor Lobby and Fellowship Hall.
