Introduction Jesus Parable of The Laborers In The Vineyard "So the last shall be first, and the first last." A parable is an earthly story designed to teach a spiritual lesson through a comparison Many parables focused on the nature of the kingdom of God, its King and its citizens Today, Jesus church is the visible manifestation of His kingdom 2 Introduction Common saying is last hired first fired We are used to seniority giving us earned advantages in the workplace We are used to working for a period of time providing certain skills and services in order to earn our pay We seek to develop and promote a work ethic which also the Scriptures teach If we work longer and harder we expect to Working Hard To Earn A Living Is A Command of God 2Th 3:10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. 2Th 3:11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies. 2Th 3:12 Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread. receive more than those who do not 3 4 Introduction But, when it comes to our salvation, we find a principle that seems to challenge our thinking That is, our salvation, eternal life, is a gift from God s grace and there is no amount of works we can do to earn our salvation 5 Our Salvation Is An Unearned Gift By God s Grace Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; Eph 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 6

Our Salvation Is An Unearned Gift By God s Grace Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 7 Introduction It is clear we, by our works, cannot earn our salvation, place God in debt to us But, it is also clear, whatever time the Lord gives us on earth, we are to lovingly labor in His vineyard, His kingdom, His church, saved body But, no matter how long or how short the time we labor, by His grace, He gives eternal life to all His children 8 Introduction Does this sound unfair of God to provide equal reward to all, no matter the quantity and duration of their labor? And, since we will all receive the unearned reward of eternal life, then why should we work that hard in His kingdom? Jesus tells the parable of the laborers in the vineyard to explain God s wonderful grace which we cannot earn 9 Jesus Parable of The Laborers In The Vineyard 1. Background 2. The parable 3. Applications 10 Background To The Parable of The Laborers In The Vineyard The parable is found only in Matthew 20;1-16 but for the background, we must go back to Matthew 19, the account of the rich young ruler The rich young ruler does not love Jesus enough to give up his possessions Jesus warns how hard it is for the rich to be saved Then Peter follows with a question Jesus The Rich Man Questions About Eternal Life and Jesus Answers Mat 19:16 And someone came to Him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?" Mat 19:17 And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." answers and repeats it after the parable 11 12

The Rich Man Questions About Eternal Life and Jesus Answers Mat 19:18 Then he *said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS; Mat 19:19 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 13 The Rich Man Questions About Eternal Life and Jesus Answers Mat 19:20 The young man *said to Him, "All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?" 14 His Love of Material Things Exposed Mat 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." Mat 19:22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property. Jesus Warns It Is Hard For A Rich Man To Be Saved Mat 19:23 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Mat 19:24 "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 15 16 Only By God Can Anyone Be Saved Mat 19:25 When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" Mat 19:26 And looking at them Jesus said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." 17 Jesus Answers Peter About What They Would Receive For Following Him Mat 19:27 Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" Mat 19:28 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 18

Jesus Answers Peter About What They Would Receive For Following Him Mat 19:29 "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. Mat 19:30 "But many who are first will be last; and the last, first. Jesus Answers Peter About What They Would Receive For Following Him Mar 10:29 Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel's sake, 19 20 Jesus Answers Peter s Question About what They Would Receive For Following Him Mar 10:30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life. 21 A Landowner Hires Laborers For His Vineyard Throughout The Day Mat 20:1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. Mat 20:2 "When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. Mat 20:3 "And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the market place; 22 A Landowner Hires Laborers For His Vineyard Throughout The Day Mat 20:4 and to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' And so they went. Mat 20:5 "Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing. A Landowner Hires Laborers For His Vineyard Throughout The Day Mat 20:6 "And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he *said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day long?' Mat 20:7 "They *said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He *said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.' 23 24

At Evening Starting With Last and Ending With First He Pays Each The Same The First Hired Grumble Against The Last Receiving Equal Wages For Less Work Mat 20:8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard *said to his foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last group to the first.' Mat 20:9 "When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius. Mat 20:10 "When those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; Mat 20:11 "When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner, Mat 20:12 saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.' but each of them also received a denarius. 25 26 The Landowner Justifies His Actions and Gives A Warning To The Grumbling Mat 20:13 "But he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Mat 20:14 'Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. Mat 20:15 'Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye The Last Shall Be First and The First Last Mat 20:16 "So the last shall be first, and the first last." envious because I am generous?' 27 28 The Last Shall Be First and The First Last Mat 19:29 "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, will receive many times as much, and will inherit eternal life. Mat 19:30 "But many who are first will be last; and the last, first. Jesus Parable of The Laborers In The Vineyard 1. Background 2. The parable 3. Applications 29 30

Summary of The Parable of The Laborers In The Vineyard A landowner hires laborers for his vineyard throughout the day At evening starting with last and ending with first he pays each the same The first hired grumble against the last receiving equal wages for less work The landowner justifies his actions and gives a warning to the grumbling The last shall be first and the first last 31 God Is Always Seeking People To Labor In His Vineyard 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 32 Our Sins Insure We Can Never Earn Our Salvation From God Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Mat 26:28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 33 Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; Eph 2:9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Eph 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. 34 Act 2:36 "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 35 36

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Rom 6:2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 37 38 Tit 2:11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, Tit 2:12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, Tit 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, Tit 2:14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. 39 40 1Jn 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to When The Gospel Calls Obey Immediately and Joyously Labor Act 16:29 And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, Act 16:30 and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Act 16:31 They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 41 42

When The Gospel Calls Obey Immediately and Joyously Labor Act 16:32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. Act 16:33 And he took them that very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household. 43 When The Gospel Calls Obey Immediately and Joyously Labor Act 16:34 And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household. 1Th 1:3 constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father, 44 Our Motive For Serving The Lord Must Never Be For Personal Material Gain 1Ti 6:3 If anyone advocates a different doctrine and does not agree with sound words, those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine conforming to godliness, 1Ti 6:4 he is conceited and understands nothing; but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, 45 Our Motive For Serving The Lord Must Never Be For Personal Material Gain 1Ti 6:5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. 1Ti 6:6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 46 Our Motive For Serving The Lord Must Never Be For Personal Material Gain 1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. Eph 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 47 Only The Lord Has The Authority To Determine The Gospel and Rewards Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 48

Only The Lord Has The Authority To Determine The Gospel and Rewards Act 2:42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. 49 All Service Done Because We Ought To Have Done It Luk 17:7 "Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come immediately and sit down to eat'? Luk 17:8 "But will he not say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink'? 50 All Service Done Because We Ought To Have Done It Luk 17:9 "He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? Luk 17:10 "So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done.'" 51 The Quality of Our Labor Is More Important Than The Quantity 1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 1Co 15:11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. 52 The Quality of Our Labor Is More Important Than The Quantity 1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord. 53 The Quality of Our Labor Is More Important Than The Quantity 2Pe 3:17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 2Pe 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. 54

All Will Receive The Same Reward Eternal Life 2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 2Ti 4:8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all Beware of Envying Another s Spiritual Reward Php 1:12 Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, Php 1:13 so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, who have loved His appearing. 55 56 Beware of Envying Another s Spiritual Reward Php 1:14 and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.
