He Is Risen Indeed You probably do not remember the name Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin. During his day he was as powerful a man as there was on earth. As a Russian communist leader, he took part in the Bolshevik revolution of 1917, he was editor of the Soviet newspaper Pravda (which, by the way, means truth), and was a full member of the Politburo. His works on economics and political science are still read today. There is a story told about a journey he took from Moscow to Kiev in 1930 to address a huge assembly on the subject of atheism. Addressing the crowd he aimed his heavy artillery at Christianity hurling insult, arguments, and what he considered proof against it. An hour later he was finished. He looked out at what seemed to be the smoldering ashes of people s faith. Are there any questions? Bukharin demanded. Deafening silence filled the auditorium, as no one dared to say a word. Then one man approached the platform and mounted the lectern standing near the communist leader. He surveyed the crowd first to the left then to the right. Finally he shouted the ancient greeting known well in the Russian Orthodox Church: CHRIST IS RISEN! The crowd arose together as one man and the response came crashing like the sound of thunder: HE IS RISEN INDEED! We are living in times when people, are questioning all aspects of Christianity and religion. However, one fact remains. It is something that changes lives, both now and eternally: CHRIST IS RISEN! When the reality of what happened at Easter becomes a reality in our lives, we are never the same again. The Bible says, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (Romans 6:4) God proved His love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, I love you. - Billy Graham

Easter L eggs Philip was born with Down s syndrome, and attended a thirdgrade Sunday School class with several eight-year-old boys and girls. Typical of that age, the children did not readily accept Philip with his differences, according to an article in Leadership magazine. But because of a creative teacher, they began to care about Philip and accept him as part of the group, though not fully. The Sunday after Easter the teacher brought L eggs pantyhose containers, the kind that look like large eggs. Each child was given one, and told to go outside on that lovely spring day and find some symbol for new life, and put it in the egg-like container. After running about the church property in wild confusion, the students returned to the classroom and placed the containers on the table. Surrounded by the children, the teacher began to open them one by one. After each one, whether flower, butterfly, or leaf, the class would ooh and ahh. Then one was opened, revealing nothing inside. The children exclaimed, That s stupid. That s not fair. Somebody didn t do their assignment... Philip spoke up, That s mine. Philip, you don t ever do things right! the student responded. There s nothing there! I did so do it, Philip insisted. I did do it. It s empty. the tomb was empty! Silence followed. From then on Philip was accepted as a full member of the class. Leadership magazine reported that Philip died not long afterwards from an infection most children would have shrugged off. At the funeral this class of eight-year-olds marched up to the altar not with flowers, but with their Sunday school teacher, each of them layed on it an empty pantyhose L egg. Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! (Luke 24:5-6) 3

Easter Means Forgiveness It was Easter Sunday on April 22, 1973, in the African country of Uganda - a nation which, at the time, was under the absolute rule of dictator Idi Amin. Kefa Sempangi was a pastor in that tortured land. Under the growing shadow of Amin, Uganda was becoming a land of terror. Still fresh in Sempangi s memory was a face burned beyond recognition, the sight of soldiers cruelly beating a man, and the horrible sound of boots crushing bones. Sempangi was exhausted and wondered what difference his sermon could make that Easter morning. He prayed for wisdom and strength and then delivered his sermon to 7,000 people. Afterwards, he made his way to the vestry, tired but joyful. Five men followed him into the small building and closed the door behind them. Sempangi turned around to find five rifles pointed at his face. He had never seen any of them before, but immediately recognized them as the secret police of the State Research Bureau - Idi Amin s assassins. Their faces were full of pure hate and rage. We are going to kill you, said the leader. If you have something to say, say it now. Sempangi stood there feeling himself lose control. He thought of his wife and child and began to shake. Somehow he managed to speak. I do not need to plead my own cause, he said. I am a dead man already. My life is dead and hidden in Christ. So if I die, I ll be alive. It is your lives that are in danger; you are dead in your sins. I will pray to God that after you have killed me, He will spare you from eternal destruction. The leader looked at him with curiosity. Then he lowered his gun and ordered the others to do the same. Will you pray for us now? the leader of the assassins asked. Though fearing it was a trick, Sempangi asked them all to bow their heads and close their eyes. Father in heaven, he prayed, You who have forgiven men in the past, forgive these men also. Do not let...continued on page 5.

...from page 4 Easter Means Forgiveness them perish in their sins but bring them unto yourself. He lifted his head, waiting for the men to pull the triggers. But then he noticed their faces. The hate and rage that had been there earlier had disappeared, and when the leader spoke again, it was without any contempt. You have helped us, he said, and we will help you. We will speak to the rest of our company and they will leave you alone. Do not fear for your life. It is in our hands and you will be protected. Jesus Christ did not come into this world to make bad people good; He came into this world to make dead people live. - Lee Strobel Sempangi s heart praised God. God s love had given him the strength to say a simple prayer - one that changed the lives of those five men forever. As Jesus hung on the cross, He said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Luke 23:34

Hush Child - God Aint Dead Clare Boothe Luce, a former US ambassador to Italy, once said, There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them. We often find ourselves faced with situations that seem hopeless. I remember reading about a painting that had a strong message to it. It was a picture of an old burned-out mountain shack. All that remained was the chimney the charred debris of what had been that family s sole possession. In front of this destroyed home stood an old grandfatherlylooking man dressed only in his underclothes with a small boy clutching a pair of patched overalls. It was evident that the child was crying. Beneath the picture were the words which the artist felt the old man was saying to the boy. They were simple words, yet they presented a profound theology and philosophy of life. Those words were, Hush child, God ain t dead! Maybe you have grown hopeless about your situation, thinking that there is nowhere to turn. But God specialises in hopeless situations. Jesus said, Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). When Jesus rose from the dead, he defeated sin and death. In the same way, when we put our trust in Jesus Christ, He gives us victory over those things in our live that would cause us to feel defeated.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Helen Hayworth Lemmel had been born and raised in a wealthy family in England, and was well-known as a Christian songwriter. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Lemmel probably wrote seventy or eighty Christian hymns and gospel songs that were popular in the 1920s through the early 1950s. Helen Lemmel had married into nobility, and her husband was a Lord. But she was stricken with blindness as a young woman, and her husband divorced her because he didn t want to be married to a blind woman. She ended up emigrating to the United States, but over the years things did not work out well and Helen ended up destitute, and living in Seattle, Washington, as a ward of King County. She lived in a tiny room in a home where the rent was paid by the county. A pastor in Seattle would visit her occasionally, and would take his children along with him. Every time we would visit her, said the pastor s son, or she would come to our home, we would ask her how she was doing, and she would always say, I am fine in all the things that matter. 9...from page 8 Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus In her room she had a little plastic organ on the table. It was like a child s chord organ. She had a vision of getting to heaven and having a mighty, thundering pipe organ. She didn t see the little plastic organ as a disadvantage. It was just a foretaste of the glory to come. Many of you probably know the most famous song that Helen Lemmel wrote. It is the testimony of a lady who saw Jesus in the middle of her darkest trials, even though she was blind: Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. Jesus said, In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world John 16:33. Helen Lemmel lived as an overcomer because she had got her eyes off her problems and turned them on Jesus her Saviour. 10 Steps to Peace with God God s Purpose: Peace and Life God is the Master Artist. He created the universe and everything in it, and made us so we could have fellowship with Him. God loves us and wants us to experience His peace and life - abundant life in this world and eternity with God. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16 The Problem: Separation from God God created us in His own image to have everlasting life. When we choose to disobey God, going our own way and not His, this is sin, and separates us from God. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. - Romans 3:23 God s Bridge to Himself: The Cross of Jesus Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose from the grave. He paid the penalty for our sin and bridged the gap between God and people. Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except through me. - John 14:6 Our Response: Receiving Jesus Christ as Saviour We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour and invite Him into our life. When we do, He comes into us through His Holy Spirit. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and fellowship with him, and he with me. - Rev. 3:20 How You Can Know Jesus Today Admit your need for Him. Be willing to turn from your sins. Believe that Jesus died for you on the cross and rose from the grave. Invite Jesus to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit. How to Pray: Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and need Your forgiveness. I believe that You died for my sins. I want to turn from my sins. I now invite You to come into my heart and life. I want to trust and follow You as Lord and Saviour. In Jesus name, Amen. If you prayed that prayer, give me a call - I would like to give you some materials to help you come to know Jesus better.
