Almost 300 Ngobe Indians and Panamanian nationals visited the clinic in four days. See inside on page 2 for more details. PANAMA MISSION

Panama mission SUNDAY, MAY 4 2014 8:30, 9:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary FULL COMMUNION The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM. SERMON Dr. Andrew Wolfe MUSIC 8:45 AM - Cross & Flame Youth Choir, Anna Underwood, Colby Myer, Theresa Mckibben 11:00 AM - Sanctuary Choir, Anna Underwood, Colby Myer, Theresa Mckibben MINISTER ON CALL Nathan Carden, 863-0765 My husband Mike and I, along with Steve Parris, recently had the privilege of representing Trinity on a medical mission to Panama. We went with a group of Christians from several area Methodist churches and two others from Florida. We were guided by Rhett Thompson who is the local missionary to Panama. It was an awesome trip. As with most experiences which are outside our comfort zones, we were nervous about what we would do, how we would interact with the local Ngobe Indians, and being in a country whose language we did not speak well. We did not need to worry. Rhett greeted us at the airport and all had been arranged. The Ngobe people had waited for months to be served by our medical teams. We had three doctors, two pharmacists, two nurses and lay people. Mike quickly found his role as a pill giver and smile giver. We melded into a team and fell into a gentle rhythm in the clinic. The patients walked for miles to see us and waited patiently for their turn. Almost 300 Ngobe Indians and Panamanian nationals visited the clinic in four days. Steve cared for a set of triplets and even made a house call to see two brothers with cerebral palsy. A mission team, arriving after us, was to build an indoor bathroom for the brothers. We were also able to visit a home built for $3,500 that was built by past mission teams and funded by the Methodist outreach programs. What a blessing it was to see how proud the family was of their new home! As is usual when you serve in God s name, you get much more in return. We are grateful for our week in Panama. We encourage everyone to consider serving in the ministry as Trinity helps to fulfill God s call to minister to all people. Ruth Atkinson Lee We invite you to be a part of our covenant with Panama. A few spots are open! Two trips are planned for this summer: June 21-June 29 and July 19-27. Cost of the trip is approx. $1,300. Groups will be working with missionary, Rhett Thompson, on projects including unskilled construction work. For more information, contact Brittany Arias at barias@trinitybirmingham.com, 879-1737. 8:45 & 11:00 AM WESLEY HALL, Rev. EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING May 10 & 17 Residents of North Alabama are no strangers to natural disasters, having weathered severe damage from tornadoes in recent years. When natural disasters strike, United Methodists jump into action. Trinity maintains a trailer with materials and tools so that we may participate in these efforts. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) orchestrates response efforts and provides training for volunteers. To enter a disaster area, volunteers are required to have a current certification with Early Response Team training. If you are willing to be contacted as an early responder when natural disasters strike, please plan to attend the following training in May: - For first time certification: Saturday, May 10 and Saturday, May 17 from 8 AM -12 Noon each week. - For those needing the re-certification course (certification must be renewed every 4 years): Saturday, May 17 from 8 AM -12 Noon. Location: Riverchase United Methodist Church Cost: $11 (to cover background check cost) Register: Bob Thompson, bobthompson.rumc.drm@gmail.com or Nathan Carden, ncarden@trinitybirmingham.com PANAMA MISSION TRIPS, JUNE & JULY 2014 A few spots are open for the June & July trips.
