AN IMPORTANT INVITATION, PARTICIPATING IN ONE OF OUR SMALL CHURCH COM- MUNITIES: While we are still a few weeks away from the beginning of Lent, please think about joining a Small Church Community here at St. Cletus during this upcoming Lenten Season. In next weekend s bulletin, you will find a sign-up sheet inviting you to join one of our parish s Small Church Communities during this upcoming Lenten Season. Our parish began this process over ten years ago, and it has been very successful for those who have participated. Please note the Q & A format below, and consider participating: What is a small church community? It is eight to ten parishioners gathering once a week for an hour and a half in someone s home to pray an opening prayer, to read and reflect on the following Sunday s Scripture readings, and to discuss how these readings relate to our everyday lives. What is the goal of such small church communities? Participating in such a group will help you be better prepared for the next Sunday's Mass, will give you a greater sense of parish community, and will help you to grow spiritually and develop a deeper appreciation of the Eucharist. What greater Lenten activity is there than becoming a part of a small church community? When will these sessions begin? Running the six weeks of Lent, they will begin the week of February 26 and will end the week of April 2, the week before Holy Week. How might I sign up? In next weekend s bulletin, you will find a list of the leaders and the days and times that they will be hosting a small church community in their homes. If you are interested in being part of a small church community during the season of Lent, please complete the enclosed form and either drop in the container in the vestibule of the church or mail it to the Parish Office as soon as possible. You will also be able to sign up after the Masses in our Gathering Space through Feb. 26, the deadline for signing up for a group. Again, I am convinced that your life will be greatly enriched in many ways by participating in one of these groups. Any questions? Please contact Sam Bryne at 636-925-2294 or sjohnbryne@aol.com. CELEBRATING DEACON KEN POTZMAN S 40 YEARS AS A DEACON: I hope that you had a chance to read the feature article in the January 20th issue of the St. Louis Review marking the fortieth anniversary of the first class of permanent deacons ordained for our Archdiocese. If you missed it, it can be read online at: http://stlouisreview.com/article/2017-01-19/deacons-meet-christ Deacon Ken and his wife, Barb, are parishioners here at St. Cletus so, on behalf of our whole parish, I want to congratulate him as well. Below are the words of an article that appeared recently in Mercy Hospital s newsletter about this great milestone for Deacon Ken, his family, and for our whole Archdiocese: In two days, Ken Potzman, Mercy Hospital St. Louis director of Pastoral Services, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his ordination as a deacon of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Ken was one of 12 members of the very first class of men ordained by Cardinal John Carberry on January 29, 1977 the first permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He is one of two living members of that first class. A January 19 article in the St. Louis Review, Deacons meet Christ in the face of those suffering, details the events that led Ken to sell his construction business and into a health care ministry with years of devoted service to those in need. In part, the article says, Forty years later, Deacon Potzman remains the youngest man ever ordained to the permanent diaconate in St. Louis at 35 years, 11 days old. At 75, he remains in full-time ministry as the director of Mercy Hospital St. Louis's pastoral services, still meeting patients as chaplain for oncology/palliative care six hours of his 11-hour days. SPEAKING OF THE PERMANENT DIACONATE, the Archdiocese s Office of the Permanent Diaconate is inviting men, who are interested in exploring a vocation to Permanent Diaconate, to attend one of several informational meetings to hear more about the life, role, and formation of Permanent Deacons in the Archdiocese of St Louis. The two closest sessions to St. Cletus would be Thursday, March 9, 7:00-8:30 pm at Assumption Parish in O Fallon and Thursday, April 6, 7:00-8:30 pm at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury. The focus of these meetings is to provide information and material to men interested in exploring a vocation to the Permanent Diaconate and in applying to enter the five (5) year Formation Program in September 2017. During the meeting, time will be provided for questions and answers and Deacons will be available after the meeting for additional conversations. Spouses of interested men are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting with their husbands. For consideration to join the class of 2022 men must be between the ages of 30 (by May 1, 2017) and 55 (age 60 if in good health or over age 60 by appeal), a permanent resident in the Archdiocese of St. Louis for at least 3 years, be in a valid marriage of at least 5 years (if married), active and in good standing with the Church and their parish, be in good health and be free of any canonical impediments. The educational courses are taught at the college level, but iit is not necessary for a candidate to have a college degree. More detailed information on the specific admission requirements will be presented during the informational meetings, but, if you cannot attend but are interested, you may contact Deacon Dale Follen at (314) 792-7433.

St. Cletus will conduct Small Church sessions during the upcoming Lenten season beginning Feb 26 thru Apr 7. Sign-up sheets will be included in the bulletin during the weekend of Feb 18/19 for those that would like to join a group or form their own group. Participants that are returning to their former group will NOT be required to sign up for their group again. We are encouraging parishioners to seriously consider devoting an hour to an hour and a half each week during Lent praying together, sharing their faith and discussing scripture in preparation for the upcoming Sunday's Mass. If you have any questions please call Sam Bryne At 636-925-2294 or email at sjohnbryne@aol.com. That Man is You! successively considers men in their relationship to God, to their spouse and to their children. The program content harmonizes current social and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive. It is particularly indebted to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council and Pope John Paul II. That Man is You! is successful at attracting large numbers of men, including younger men still actively parenting, and then transforming their spiritual lives. Please come and enjoy breakfast and fellowship with fellow men of our great Parish. Please call Pat Lepski at 314.406.8755 with any questions.
