Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 10:45 AM Worship September 30, 2018 Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost Now the Feast and Celebration Someone is casting out demons in Jesus name who isn t part of Jesus own circle, and the disciples want him stopped. They appeal to Jesus, as Joshua did to Moses about the elders who prophesied without official authorization. Like Moses, Jesus refuses to see this as a threat. Jesus welcomes good being done in his name, even when it is not under his control. The circle we form around Jesus word must be able to value good being done in ways we wouldn t do it, by people we can t keep tabs on.

Welcome members and guests to our worship service today. If you are visiting, we encourage you to sign the guest register located in the narthex. Please include your home address, email address and phone number. In each pew, there is a card that you can fill out if you wish to have a consult with the pastor and/or leave us more information about you. A nursery is available for children up to five years of age during the service. The nursery is located off the hallway on the Huntington Avenue side of the church building. There are also quiet bags available for older children to enjoy during the service. Please ask an usher about borrowing one. Parents are invited to bring children from the nursery for Holy Communion to receive a blessing. If children become restless or noisy during worship, parents are encouraged to take them in to and out of the sanctuary as necessary. Trinity offers an induction loop for the benefit of hearing impaired worshippers. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. If you are unsure if your hearing aid is compatible, please contact your audiologist. Enlarged print sermon copies are available for the benefit of sight or hearing impaired worshippers. They can be found in the bulletin rack just outside the sacristy kitchen, closest to the wheelchair ramp exit door. Welcome/Announcements Responsive Thanksgiving for Baptism Quiet preparation is encouraged at this time. Gathering Assembly stands. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. One: Praise and thanksgiving be to you, O God of plenteous grace, All: for the waters you provide for the earth: for snow and dew, for oceans and wells, for the rain that nourishes plants and trees, for the streams that enliven the animals, great and small. One: We praise you, O God, for water. All: We praise you, O God, for water. One: Blessing and glory be to you, O God of abundant mercy, All: for your word that flows with life-giving waters: for the story of the fountain that gushed from the rock, for the memory of the Jordan that immersed your Son in our sorrows, for the living rivers that flow from the cross, for the reconciling waters of baptism around which we gather. One: We bless you, O God, for water and the word. All: We bless you, O God, for water and the word. One: At this font we pray: All: Pour upon us yet again the Spirit of our baptism. Our roots are dry: shower us with divine blessing. Our fruits need moisture: renew us for vibrant growth. Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us. One: We beg you, O God, for water and the Spirit. All: We beg you, O God, for water and the Spirit. One: You, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are the Water we crave; All: you, O God, are Rain and River and Fountain, life for us all, now and forever. Amen. Hymn & Remembrance of Baptism During the singing of the song, please come forward and make the sign of the cross on your forehead as a symbol of the remembrance of your baptism. I Will Call Upon the Lord I will call upon the Lord, Who is worthy to be praised, So shall I be saved from my enemies. The Lord liveth and blessed be the rock And may the God of my salvation be exalted. The Lord liveth and blessed be the rock And may the God of my salvation be exalted. Prayer of the Day Generous God, your Son gave his life that we might come to peace with you. Give us a share of your Spirit, and in all we do empower us to bear the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Gospel Acclamation Thy Word Chorus Word The assembly stands. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path Verse 1 When I feel afraid, think I ve lost my way Still you re there right beside me. Nothing will I fear as long as you are near, Please be near me to the end. Chorus Verse 2 I will not forget your love for me and yet My heart forever is wandering. Jesus be my guide and hold me to your side And I will love you to the end. Chorus Gospel Lesson: 9:38-50 On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus teaches his disciples about ministry that involves service and sacrifice. His disciples are slow to realize that these words apply to them as well as to others. The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the 9th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. John said to Jesus, Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us. But Jesus said, Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward. If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.

For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day Shout to the Lord The assembly is seated. Pastor Tina My Jesus, my savior, Lord, there is none like you. All of my days, I want to praise the wonders of your mighty love. My comfort, my shelter, tower of refuge and strength, Let every breath, all that I am, never cease to worship you. Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing, Majesty, power, and praise to the king. Mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of your name. I sing for joy at the work of your hand, Forever I ll love you, forever I ll stand Nothing compares to the promise I have in you. Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Sharing of the Peace The peace, which enables people to live in unity and in the spirit of mutual forgiveness, comes from Christ whose word has been proclaimed. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. Receiving of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord The assembly is seated.
