Welcome to Saint David s United Church
Luke 22:39-46 (Jesus prays in the garden)
Hymn: VU 133 Go to Dark Gethsemane
Go to Dark Gethsemane Go to dark Gethsemane, You that feel the tempter s power, Your Redeemer s conflict see, Watch with him one bitter hour; Turn not from his grief away: Learn from him to watch and pray.
See him at the judgment hall, Beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned; See him meekly bearing all; Love to all his soul sustained. Shun not suffering, shame, or loss: Learn from Christ to bear the cross.
Calvary s mournful mountain view; There, the Lord of glory see, Made a sacrifice for you, Dying on the accursed tree. It is finished, hear his cry: Trust in Christ and learn to die.
A Call to Walk Voice 1: It is hard to walk with Jesus today. Voice 2: It is frightening to see our friend and teacher arrested.
Voice 1: It is confusing to see Jesus bound and beaten. People: It is overwhelming to see the hatred and anger that people have for this man we love and trust.
Voice 2: It is time for us to trust that God is at work within this devastating situation. People: Jesus, we are walking with You today.
All: We walk toward the cross today, not knowing, O God, why we are here, not even wanting to be here. Yet we move, step by step, toward the cross trusting in Your love that is greater than anything we can imagine, trusting that You are working in Jesus life even as we watch his life end, trusting that life is not ended by death, trusting that in the sorrow and tragedies of our lives, You are walking with us and working within us.
We walk with Jesus toward the cross today, knowing that You, O God, are walking with us. Amen.
Luke 22:47-54 (Jesus is arrested)
Hymn: VU 278 In the Quiet Curve of Evening
In the Quiet Curve of Evening In the quiet curve of evening, In the sinking of the days, In the silky void of darkness, you are there.
In the lapses of my breathing, In the space between my ways, In the crater carved by sadness, you are there. You are there, you are there, you are there.
In the rests between my phrases, In the cracks between the stars, In the gaps between the meaning, you are there.
In the melting down of endings, In the cooling of the sun, In the solstice of the winter, you are there. You are there, you are there, you are there.
In the mystery of my hungers, In the silence of my rooms, In the cloud of my unknowing, you are there.
In the empty cave of grieving, In the desert of my dreams, In the tunnel of my sorrow, you are there. You are there, you are there, you are there.
Luke 22:55-62 (Peter denies knowing Jesus)
Hymn: VU 132 Bitter Was the Night
Bitter Was the Night Bitter was the night, Thought the cock would crow for ever. Bitter was the night Before the break of day.
Saw you passing by, Told them all I didn t know you. Bitter was the night Before the break of day.
Told them all a lie, And I told it three times over. Bitter was the night Before the break of day.
Bitter was the night, Thought there d never be a morning. Bitter was the night Before the break of day.
Bitter was the night, Thought the cock would crow for ever. Bitter was the night Before the break of day.
Luke 23:1-5, 13-25 (Jesus before Pilate)
Hymn: VU 149 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God: All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.
See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down: Did e er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Luke 23:26-27, 32-43 (Jesus is placed on the cross)
Hymn: VU144 Were You There?
Were You There? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, Tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, Tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, Tremble, tremble. Were you there when the sun refused to shine?
Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, Tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

A Time of Silence
O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown: How pale Thou art with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish which once was bright as morn!
