READING Luke 23 vv. 33 41 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one! The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself! There was also an inscription over him, This is the King of the Jews.
One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us! But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? READING John 19 vv. 28 34 After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfil the scripture), I am thirsty. A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, It is finished. Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.

His dying crimson like a robe, Spreads o er his body on the Tree; Then am I dead to all the globe, And all the globe is dead to me. 5. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. 3. READING John 20 vv. 1 10 Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John. Glory to you, O Lord. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Lord Jesus, by your dying you have destroyed death. By your rising you have restored us to eternal life.
HYMN Thine be the glory, risen, conqu ring Son, Endless is the vict ry thou o'er death hast won; Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, Kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom; Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, For her Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting. No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; Life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife. Make us more than conqu rors, through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Words Edmond Budry Tune MACCABAEUS (1854 1932) George Frideric Handel Tr. Richard Hoyle (1685 1759) (1875 1939) PRAYER The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said peace be with you the peace of the risen Christ be with you all. And also with you.
