MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE Neland Avenue Christian Reformed Church April 13, 2017 On this Maundy Thursday evening, we gather as sisters and brothers in Christ around the table of our Lord to sing and pray, to remember and believe. We feel the weight of our deadly sin on Jesus, as we hear and reflect on his seven last words from the cross. Prelude Song: Ah, Holy Jesus 172:1,2 Ah, holy Jesus, how have you offended, that mortal judgment has on you descended? By foes derided, by you own rejected, O most afflicted. Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon you? It was my treason, Lord, that has undone you. Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied you; I crucified you. Opening of Confession Bringing Our Sins to the Cross: Beautiful Scandalous Night Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. Reading from Luke 23:33-34 Song: Meekness and Majesty 157 Today you will be with me in Paradise Reading from Luke 23:35-43 Song: Jesus, Remember Me 169 Dear woman, here is your son. Reading from John 19:29 Choir: Go to Dark Gethsemane (James Montgomery/Dale Grotenhuis) Go to dark Gethsemane, all who feel the tempter s power; your Redeemer s conflict see. Watch with him one bitter hour. Turn not from his griefs away; teach us, Lord, how we should pray. Follow to the judgment hall. View the Lord of life arraigned. Oh, the wormwood and the gall! Oh, the pangs his soul sustained! Shun not suff ring, shame, or loss help us, Lord, to bear our cross. Calvary s mournful mountain climb: there, adoring at his feet, mark the miracle of time, God s own sacrifice complete: It is finished! hear him cry. Reading from John 19:30 Song: How Deep the Father s Love for Us + How deep the Father's love for us, How vast beyond all measure That he should give his only Son To make a wretch his treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns his face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon his shoulders. Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that left him there Until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom. But I will boast in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom. Choir: Remember Me (R. Kevin Boesiger) Remember me, remember me. When you come to this table remember me. Remember me, remember me. This bread and this cup are the promise of life, remember me. The Lord s Supper In a world of broken promises, remember what Christ did. The work he did on Calvary would make us whole again. The promise that he made goes beyond our earthly days. His life and death have made our way for all eternity. Break now the bread of life, dear Lord, to me, as once you broke the loaves beside the sea.
