GOOD FRIDAY Order of Worship April 14, 2017 7:00 pm

WORSHIP SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St Good Friday Service 7:00 PM Nursery 6 months 3 years Good Friday 2017 The righteousness of the saints in this world consists more in the forgiveness of sins than in the perfection of virtues. St. Augustine Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, the seven days of the Church calendar that culminate on Easter Sunday. During Holy Week, the Church reenters the last week of Jesus life. Palm Sunday is fun. We get to wave palm fronds and shout with joy. Palm Sunday is a day that Americans can all get behind. But if we read the gospels closely, we discover that Palm Sunday brings with it a dark battle. On Palm Sunday, Jesus came into Jerusalem with one goal in mind: to suffer and die for people he loves very dearly. Nowhere do we see his suffering so acutely as on Good Friday. On Good Friday, we commemorate the day that Jesus was betrayed and abandoned by his friends, was tortured and beaten by the Roman authorities, and was crucified on a cross, having his pleas for mercy fall on the Father s deaf ears. Good Friday is stark and ruthless. To catch a small glimpse of that, each year our Good Friday service ends in darkness and silence. At the same time, Good Friday, is also a profound and gracious gift from God to us. For, if we let the biblical story shape our imaginations, we will know that he died for us. In other words, he died with us in mind. Because this is true, Good Friday is a sobering event. It is, however, full of God s mercy and hope. Let us worship! Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. WELCOME PREPARATION PRELUDE Were You There? Lyrics are provided for reflection. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Spiritual INVITATION Psalm 32:12 Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. Standing Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. Let us pray. Jesus, Son of God and Son of Man, I praise you, worship you, and love you. On the cross you shouldered the weight of God's just anger against my sin and restored for me righteousness and life, setting me completely free and making me right with God. There are not enough words to thank you, my Savior. Amen. THE FIRST READING JESUS PRAYS ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES Luke 22:3946 Seated And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, Pray that you may not enter into temptation. And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, and he said to them, Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation. THE SECOND READING THE BETRAYAL AND ARREST Luke 22:4753 Seated While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss? And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, Lord, shall we strike with the sword? And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, No more of this! And he touched his ear and healed him. Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness. INTERLUDE What Wondrous Love Is this? Alexander Means American Trad. ca. 1835 Arr. Adam Behringer 2011 THE THIRD READING PETER DENIES JESUS Luke 22:5462 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, and Peter was following at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, This man also was with him. But he denied it, saying, Woman, I do not know him. And a little later someone else saw him and said, You also are one of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean. But Peter said, Man, I do not know what you are talking about. And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly. 3

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from A New Zealand Prayer Book Almighty and merciful God, we have sinned against you, in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with all our heart. We have not loved others as you have loved us. We are truly sorry. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be. That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, through Jesus Christ our Savior. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) 4

THE FOURTH READING THE FOURTH READING JESUS BEFORE PILATE JESUS BEFORE PILATE Luke 23:15, 1325 Seated Then the whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king. And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answered him, You have said so. Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find no guilt in this man. But they were urgent, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place. Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them, You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. I will therefore punish and release him. But they all cried out together, Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder. Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, but they kept shouting, Crucify, crucify him! A third time he said to them, Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him. But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will. HOMILY Were You There Rev. John Haralson 6

INTERLUDE Were You There? Lyrics are provided for reflection. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Spiritual Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced him in the side? THE FIFTH READING THE CRUCIFIXION Luke 23:3243 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And they cast lots to divide his garments. And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One! The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself! There was also an inscription over him, This is the King of the Jews. One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us! But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong. And he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And he said to him, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. 7

Musical Offering: Satisfied In You (Psalm 42) Lyrics are provided for reflection. I have lost my appetite And a flood is welling up behind my eyes So I eat the tears I cry And if that were not enough They know just the words to cut and tear and prod When they ask me Whereʼs your God? Brian Eichelberger, 2012 Why are you downcast, oh my soul? Why so disturbed within me? I can remember when you showed your face to me Chorus As a deer pants for water, so my soul thirsts for you And when I behold Your glory, You so faithfully renew Like a bed of rest for my fainting flesh I am satisfied in you When Iʼm staring at the ground Itʼs an inbred feedback loop that brings me down So itʼs time to lift my brow And remember better days When I loved to worship you and all your ways With the sweetest songs of praise Why are you downcast, oh my soul? Why so disturbed within me? I can remember when you showed your grace to me Chorus Let my sighs give way to songs that sing about your faithfulness Let my pain reveal your glory as my only real rest Let my losses show me all I truly have is you, cause all I truly have is you So when Iʼm drowning out at sea And your breakers and your waves crash down on me Iʼll recall your safety scheme Youʼre the one who made the waves And your Son went out to suffer in my place And to show me that Iʼm safe So why am I down? Why so disturbed? I am satisfied in you 9

THE SIXTH READING THE DEATH OF JESUS Luke 23:4447 It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun's light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit! And having said this he breathed his last. Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, Certainly this man was innocent! PSALM 22 Seated My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him! Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother's breasts. On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother's womb you have been my God. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast; my strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you lay me in the dust of death. Continued on the next page 11

For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet I can count all my bones they stare and gloat over me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. But you, O Lord, do not be far off! O you my help, come quickly to my aid! Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog! Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen! I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord! May your hearts live forever! All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. 12

Good Friday is a day to meditate especially on the Cross, where Jesus Christ gave his life for his people. It is the day in Holy Week set aside for sober reflection on our sins which cost him his life. In keeping with the sober theme of this event, the service will conclude in darkness and silence. Please observe complete silence in the sanctuary, narthex, and parking lot as you leave. 13
