Love - 1 Cor 13:4-8a "Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends." (1 Corinthians 13:4 8 NRSV) Love is Patient - Patient = Long suffering (not waiting without complaining) It s like a beam that holds up a building. - The weight of the building is trying to bend the beam and break it into pieces. - The beam remains stedfast. - The beam is not changed by pressure. How is your attitude when you are under pressure? Does your family believe you have multiple personalities? - Is there church Dad, work Dad, Sports Dad. ( your family knows who you really are). How do you behave when you are under pressure? - Work situations (unfair treatment, false accusations, snippy, off standish) - You don t change IF you are walking in love. You stand on God s word. Frustrate your circumstances by responding the same as you would even under pressure. God is your provider, not your job. - The same hope, joy, and trust. - Jesus said He would never let anything happen to you that you couldn t stand up under and bear. - Opportunity When trouble shows up and we retain our joy the devil can t understand how we still have joy. (Joy comes from Jesus words. better read your bible). God will indeed repay those people who afflict you. 2 These 1:6. 1

- You should be praying for their salvation though, not that God would get them. - This is where the world sees Jesus in you. REMEMBER - If you gloat when your enemy stumbles God will be displeased and turn away His wrath from them. Proverbs 24:17-18. - Examples (politics) - LOVE IS NOT Impatient. = It is not bent under pressure. - Love IS Kind. Kind = Merciful - Are you kind to others or are you entitled. Are you kind to others or are you looking for them to be kind to you first? - Are you quick to show forgiveness to others. - Love is NOT envious/jealous Envy = intense negative feelings towards another s success. Love instead REJOICES when others succeed. - Love is content with what God is providing at the moment. - Love is NOT boastful Boastful = To heap praise upon oneself. Love lifts others up instead of self. (It deflects praise). - It defers honor to others. - Love is NOT arrogant Arrogant = To have an exaggerated self-conception (PRIDE). Love remembers how truly desperate they are without Jesus. - Good people. - No chance of beating sin without His help. Don t look down on others. - Love does NOT dishonor others. (RUDE) 2

How do you talk about those around you the most? (Rutland Book pg 37) How do you treat and talk to others? (Rutland Book pg 30) Especially those who treat you wrongly. Does your behavior cause God s name to fall into dishonor? If so, you are breaking the commandment found in Ex 20:7. - Do not lift up/carry the Lord s name in an unworthy manner. - The world is watching. Living under His name wrongly causes it to be dishonored. - Love is NOT self-seeking Love does not strive for personal advantage. - Love sacrifices itself to help others - Lust sacrifices others to help self. Love does not do things for others to receive personal gain. - Jesus said to give expecting nothing in return. - Tell story about Jenny Shelton. Love chooses to be a servant of others. - We are called to be servants. What would happen if you got your mind off yourself and your needs and looked around you? According to Jesus the servant of all will be the greatest in the Kingdom of God. - Are you trying to out serve your spouse? 1 John 3:16-18 - We recognize love by this, that He laid down his own life on our behalf and in our place - and we are obligated on our brother s behalf to lay down our lives. But whoever has the things needed for life in this world, and should see his brother having need, and he shuts up his hear towards him, How does the love of God remain in Him? Little children, let us not love in word, nor with tongue, but in work and faithfulness. - Jesus mentions this behavior as one of the things he will use to measure a persons belief at the judgment. 3

" When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Then he will say to those at his left hand, You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you? Then he will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me. And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. " (Matthew 25:31 46 NRSV) - Love does NOT let itself be provoked to anger/wrath. Have you every tried arguing with someone who walks in this? A soft answer turns away wrath. "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." (Proverbs 15:1 NRSV) - Love is NOT resentful. (keeping a record of wrong) Calculating 4

- does not calculate (add up, keep record of) wrong done to it. - to make someone pay for previous wrongs. Thursday, August 10, 2017 - "Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." (Philippians 4:8 NRSV) - Love does NOT rejoice in sin (evil) Love does not celebrate sin. PERIOD. Love does not call sinful behavior love. That s unbiblical. Love IS obeying God s commandments. - Love DOES rejoice in what is True. - Love Bears all things. Pass over in silence. - Above all, love each other deeply because love covers a multitude of sins 1 Ptr 4:8 - Cover/Conceal faults of another. Don t spread them around. Do you keep reliving past hurts because you are keeping score? Jesus told us to be reconcilers. - Love Believes all things. Trust. Believes the best of every person (and their intentions) If you see people (anyone) as always out to get you you are NOT walking in love. - Love Hopes all things. Love is living in expectancy of what God is doing and is going to do. - Love endures all things. to maintain a belief or course of action in the face of opposition, stand one s ground, hold out, endure 5

Bigot (misused) Thursday, August 10, 2017 - So all this time I thought being called a bigot was an insult...i was wrong. - It is a COMPLIMENT! - According to Oxford English Dictionary a bigot is "A person considered to adhere unreasonably or obstinately to a particular religious belief, practice, etc." After looking it up I actually find the word a compliment. If a bigot is a person who stands up for what they believe in, despite great resistance and persecution (obstinately), and doesn't give into reasonings (unreasonable) that would try to talk it out of their confidence in God, but instead adhere to (actual walk out what they believe) then being a bigot is a good thing, no matter what their faith is. - May we all obstinately stand up for what Jesus taught, refuse to allow the world s reasonings to persuade us with reasonings contrary to scripture and remain steadfast in God s truth. - Love never ends/fails - The FIRST symptom of a church dying is when it s love starts to wain. Love is the first fruit of the spirit. Galatians 5:22 It is the first evidence that you are being led by the spirit of God. It is evidence that you share God s nature. Your Love of God is expressed in your actions of love towards others. You imitate God when you give to others in need and when you bless those who curse you. The greatest commandment is "Jesus answered, The first is, Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. 6

Then the scribe said to him, You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that he is one, and besides him there is no other ; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one s neighbor as oneself, this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. After that no one dared to ask him any question." (Mark 12:29 34 NRSV) To love God means to obey His word. 1 Jn 5:1 "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome," (1 John 5:1 3 NRSV) Believes (draw attention to believes) "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God s wrath." (John 3:36 NRSV) Belief is evidenced by obedience. Faith is evidenced by action. Faith works by love. John 14:21 "They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them. " (John 14:21 NRSV) 7
