1 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives Department of Library Special Collections Western Kentucky University Bowling Green, KY 42101-1092 Descriptive Inventory TOLLE Collection 4 boxes. 50 folders. 456 items. 1814-1941. Originals. 1980.121.1; 2009.4.91; SC2015.3.4 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE William Tolle (1785-1854), the son of Roger Tolle and Sally Sims, was a native of Fauquier County, Virginia and a veteran of the War of 1812. He married Polly Turner in 1804 and in 1820 moved his family to Boyds Creek in Barren County, Kentucky. Polly died in 1823, having given birth to 15 children. In 1825, William Tolle married Martha Jane Snoddy (1805-1859) and fathered 12 more children. William Tolle was a farmer, mail carrier, and clock seller. William Daniel Tolle (1834-1927), known as Daniel, was a son of William Tolle and his second wife Martha Snoddy. A bachelor, he spent his entire life in the Boyd s Creek community, where he was a farmer, merchant, sawmill operator, local and family historian, and veteran s pension claim agent. Under the pen name Ellot, he wrote weekly columns on Barren County history for the Glasgow Times from the 1870s to the 1920s. Several members of the Tolle family were veterans, including William Tolle s sons John Turner Tolle (1814-1847), killed in the Mexican War, Patrick Henry Tolle (1820-1861) and James Madison Tolle (1827-1863), both killed in the Civil War, and grandson Peter Bohler Tolle (1839-1861), also killed in the Civil War. Another of William Tolle s sons, Adrastus Minns Tolle (1839-1866), a son-in-law, William M. Mansfield (1836-1912), and grandsons James Powell Tolle (1831-1921), Henry Bascom Tolle (1842-1929) and Joel Lee Tolle (1836-1885) were Civil War veterans. After the war, several of William and Polly Tolle s grandchildren emigrated to Saline and McPherson counties in Kansas. COLLECTION NOTE This collection consists of letters, business and personal papers, and family data of the Tolle family of Barren County, Kentucky. Some letters and family data of the Snoddy, Bransford and associated families are included. Also included is correspondence, affidavits and supporting material relating to several veteran s pension claims in which William Daniel Tolle acted as agent, as well as his lengthy history of Barren County. Some of the materials in this collection are in very poor condition due to fading, deterioration and water damage. An inventory and genealogy are in Box 1, Folder 1; the genealogy is intended to show relationships

2 among the individuals featured most prominently in this collection and should not be construed as comprehensive. Box 1 contains family correspondence and papers, a family historical sketch, and some of William Daniel Tolle s pension claims work. William Daniel Tolle s Biography of the Tolle Family (Folder 2) includes recollections and information about his grandfather, Roger Tolle (1742-1814), and his descendants; also included are clippings and census notes with family data. Genealogical data on the Snoddy, Bransford and associated families (Folder 3) includes correspondence, a family history by Thomas L. Bransford, and an 1874 circular for a school in Cave City, Kentucky operated by members of the Snoddy family. Papers of William Daniel Tolle s sister Elizabeth and her husband William M. Mansfield (Folder 4) include an account rendered to Elizabeth and letters of William written while he was serving in the 21 st Kentucky Infantry during the Civil War. Of interest is his 1864 letter to William Daniel Tolle declaring his refusal to vote for Abraham Lincoln, his support for presidential candidate George B. McClellan and Lincoln critic Frank Wolford, and his fear that he might swing by the neck if his sentiments were known. His April 1865 letter celebrates both the fall of Richmond, Virginia and the intention of his wife s nephew, Joel Tolle, and any other Lincoln men to depart for Kansas before his return home. William Daniel Tolle s correspondence and personal papers (Box 1, Folders 5, 6) includes family letters, his own letter to a nephew referring to his work as a pension agent, and an 1865 letter from a Barren County friend studying medicine in Philadelphia; he asks about the prospects for oil production in the county, complains about the bondage of his medical studies, and urges Tolle to marry. Other family correspondence in Box 1 includes a letter to William Daniel Tolle s sister Nancy from a Kansas cousin, and documentation regarding Nancy s possible pension claim arising out of her brother Adrastus s Civil War service (Folder 7). Adrastus M. Tolle s letters (Folder 8) from Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas and Alabama during his service in the same unit as his brother-in-law William Mansfield (Folder 8) mention camp life, an unnamed sweetheart, and Confederate activity around Nashville, and he asks Nancy to write the President to request his discharge. Correspondence of another sister, Senora Jane Tolle of Glasgow, Kentucky (Folders 9, 10) includes a letter from a cousin after his relocation to Kansas and later letters from friends and relatives, particularly great-nieces in California and Alabama, who provide family news and discuss the estate settlement of Senora s nephew Henry Bascom Tolle ( Uncle B ). Letters to Senora s sister Judith and her husband Cooper Garner of Glasgow, Kentucky (Folder 11) come mostly from nieces in California and Kansas. Joel Tolle writes to his uncle William Daniel Tolle from Kansas describing his new home (Folder 12); another nephew, James P. Tolle, writes from Georgia during his Civil War service and describes his farming in Allen County, Kentucky and later in Kansas (Folder 13). James s brother William also writes from Kansas of his farm and family (Folder 14). Letters to William Daniel Tolle s great-nephew Leonard Tolle of Glasgow, Kentucky (Folder 15) concern his efforts to take a Railroad Course by correspondence during the Depression, and letters to Leonard s brother William A. Willie Tolle in Argenta, Illinois (Folder 16) come from his parents, Patrick Henry Tolle and Martha Eva Tolle, and his sister Etta. A member of the Hammer family (the maiden name of Patrick Henry Tolle s mother) also writes from California (Folder 17). Letters to unidentifiable recipients (Folder 18) relate mainly to commercial matters, but include a letter from a cousin who is serving in France during World War I. Miscellaneous business and family papers in Box 1 include a solicitation from the socialist newspaper Appeal to Reason (Folder 19); contracts and accounts (Folder 20); unused

3 pages from a tobacco accounts ledger (Folder 21); reports of activity in the Glasgow circuit of the Methodist Church (Folder 22); receipt booklets for subscriptions to the Glasgow Times (Folder 23); and oversized items, including a broadside relating to President Grover Cleveland s 1887 visit to Nashville, Tennessee (Folder 30). The remainder of Box 1 contains correspondence, affidavits and other materials relating to pension applications by veterans and their survivors in which William Daniel Tolle acted as agent. Included are materials filed on behalf of a Glasgow veteran of the U.S. Colored Infantry (Folder 24). Box 2 contains a 556-page manuscript detailing the history of Barren County early settlers, families, schools, churches, Civil War veterans, and social and commercial life. The cover page bears the title The Tolle Papers, by Daniel B. Tolle, but the likely author is William Daniel Tolle, as the text resembles his published articles on Barren County history in the Glasgow Times. Box 3 contains a ledger recording sales of groceries and general merchandise from 1874-1875, apparently the property of William Daniel Tolle and his cousin Samuel Rogers Tolle. Box 4 contains a subsequent addition to the collection consisting primarily of Tolle family letters and some business papers of William Daniel Tolle. Papers of William Daniel Tolle s father William (Folders 1, 2) consist of a letter written to him during his War of 1812 service, his letter to his wife during a trip in 1828, and an account book. Letters to William Daniel Tolle (Folders 3-7) are mostly from his many nieces, nephews and cousins in Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma and California. Letters to him from 1865-1899 (Folder 3) concern family matters as well as the settlement of the estate of Tolle s half-sister, Martha Jane Snoddy. Letters from 1900-1905 (Folder 4) include news from George Neagle, a nephew who knew him when a boy and who writes from Texas of his life sixteen years later. Letters from 1906-1910 (Folder 5) include Kansas nephew James P. Tolle s transcription of data from family Bibles. Letters from 1911-1918 (Folder 6) include a request for assistance from Josephine Tolle, the widow of a deceased nephew and Civil War veteran, John J. Tolle, in obtaining proof of their marriage in order to apply for a pension. Letters from 1921-1924 (Folder 7) include 90 th birthday greetings. Letters written jointly to William Daniel Tolle and his sisters Senora, Nancy and Judith (Folders 8, 9) are from nieces, nephews and cousins as well as from another sister, Virginia (Tolle) King, who describes a destructive 1904 flood at Kansas City, Missouri. John and Josephine Tolle write of the death of their son Philip, and Anna (Tolle) Collingwood provides family data as she describes a photograph, although the photograph is not included. Letters to Senora J. Tolle (Folders 10, 11) are mostly from nieces and nephews; they include several from members of her sister Virginia s family, who write from Texas and Missouri. Miscellaneous letters (Folder 12) are by correspondents whose relationship to the Tolle family is unclear. Several are between members of the Sharp family of Kentucky. One 1939 letter, written from California, may be from a member of the Hammer family. The remainder of Box 4 contains various documents relating to veterans pension claims, including those of African Americans, for which William Daniel Tolle acted as agent (Folder 13); accounts and circulars relating to William Daniel Tolle s tobacco sales (Folder 14) and miscellaneous circulars and receipts (Folder 15), including promotional material for a medical book titled Perfect Manhood and the Way to Attain It.
