Pastures of Learning in FDSCI 205 Genetic Identity: Chromosomes. DNA Structure. DNA Replication. Forensics. Deepen Learning: I use a scripture from the Pearl of Great Price to lead our discussion on Forensics of ancient mummies to the restoration of the gospel. Personal Genetics.
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings (Egypt), became famous for the wealth of treasure it contained. The genetic relationships between King Tut and the other mummies that were discovered is real history. In addition to the science, there is also a story about faith. After my mission I discovered a book by the master of ancient scripture and long time BYU Professor Dr. Hugh Nibley, The Message of the Joseph Smith Papyri: An Egyptian Endowment.
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning In the Pearl of Great Price (Abraham 1:26) we are told that: Pharaoh, being a righteous man, established his kingdom and judged his people wisely and justly all his days, seeking earnestly to imitate that order established by the fathers in the first generations (meaning the Priesthood), but because of his lineage (Noah had three sons: Ham, Japheth and Shem. Pharaoh was a descendant of Ham, but the covenant and right to the Priesthood went to Abraham through Shem) he was cursed (not able to obtain the Priesthood).
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning From the facsimiles in the Book of Abraham we learn that Abraham was revered by Pharaoh and was taught by him. How much Abraham was inspired to teach Pharaoh we don t know, but it is remarkable to study the ancient records and realize that the Lord was preparing for the Restoration of the Gospel thousands of years before it occurred. Abraham sitting upon Pharaoh s throne, by the politeness of the king, with a crown upon his head, representing the Priesthood, as emblematical of the grand Presidency in Heaven; with the scepter of justice and judgment in his hand.

Pastures of Learning in FDSCI 205 Genetic Inheritance: Deeper Learning: Mendelian inheritance. Polygenetic inheritance. and genetic disorders. Pedigree analysis and genetic testing. I use a website from the University of Utah and an article from the Liahona to show the connection between the genealogy and genetics.
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning A connection between the LDS Church and Genetics: "More human disease genes have been discovered in Utah than in any other place in the world" due to the collaboration between members of the Church, their work in genealogy, and genetic scientists at the University of Utah. For more information about the role of genealogy (Family History) in the discovery of genes involved in human diseases visit the following website: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/science/utah/

Pastures of Learning in FDSCI 205 Genetic Inheritance: Deeper Learning: Mendelian inheritance. Polygenetic inheritance and genetic disorders. Pedigree analysis and genetic testing. With the advent of genetic testing, we are faced with many new questions about the role that genetics plays in behavior. The article Am I my genes? explores some of those questions.
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning The article Am I my genes? in the journal Genetics in Medicine explores many questions raised by genetics concerning personal identities that have not been fully investigated. Individuals may interpret genetic information in widely differing ways, relying on their preexisting personal and/or cultural narratives to incorporate this information into their identities. Given the relative newness of genetic tests, many physicians still have limited experience or comfort with genetic testing. Physicians, media, commercial marketers of genetic tests, and others often view genetic markers as straightforward, with clear unequivocal meanings (that is not always the case). Pastures of Learning in FDSCI 205 Cancer: Cancer Causes and Variety. Cancer Staging and Treatment. Deeper Learning: I use a description of the Mormons from a classic text in biology to show the connection between the Word of Wisdom and a decrease in cancer.
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning The classic text Molecular Biology of the Cell in the section on cancer, suggests that there are both environmental and genetic risk factors for developing cancer. Of note is the statement that the incidence of cancer among Mormons in Utah is only about half that among Americans in general. Our abstinent way of life, meaning our adherence to the Word of Wisdom, reduces our chance of developing certain types cancer. This gives additional meaning to the verse in Doctrine and Covenants, Section 89 that states: "18. And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;"

Include the statement by the First Presidency in our discussion on Stem Cells.
Greener Pastures Deeper Learning Statement from the First Presidency (July : 6, 2001): "While the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have not taken a position at this time on the newly emerging field of stem cell research, it merits cautious scrutiny. The proclaimed potential to provide cures or treatments for many serious diseases needs careful and continuing study by conscientious, qualified investigators. As with any emerging new technology, there are concerns that must be addressed. Scientific and religious viewpoints both demand that strict moral and ethical guidelines be followed. Do we have a role in the debate about stem cell research, and if so, what should it be?
Pastures of Learning in FDSCI 205: Where Science Meets Faith Goal has been to identify and create Pastures of Learning to deepen the learning experience and increase faith. However, time constraints do not always allow full development of a complete Pasture. Touchpoints can be used to identify additional connections with the course material for deeper thought, or can serve as the Gate to a Greener Pasture.
