SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME July 23, 2017 FRUIT OF THE WORD The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. Dear brothers and sisters, As we enter the second half of the year, we look back with gratitude to God and with the expectation of making things even better. Some of you may have traveled and visited your family and friends and renewed and strengthened relationships. Your children may be getting ready to go back to school, all geared up for the new school year and refreshed in mind and body. Let us pray that they are able to achieve their great goals with the help of the teachers and staff. Our parish has been active even in the early summer months. It seems our activities never slow down. As usual we were blessed with a lot of visitors at all the Masses on these Sundays. In the last six months, we sent 19 of our parishioners to eternity and baptized 20 children. That is a good sign. Twenty seven children received First Communion and thirty one children received the Sacrament of Confirmation. We had 12 weddings celebrated at our church so far this year, including some from out of town. Some families have moved away from the parish and almost an equal number of families newly came in. Therefore the number of families stays almost the same, more or less 1650. We had some new parishioners joining various ministries and organizations, making our parish more vibrant. Our social and spiritual outreach ministries have more volunteers now visiting the homebound and the sick. We have a few volunteers visiting the hospital and nursing homes as good disciples of Jesus, bringing peace and joy to the sick and the afflicted. Parish social ministry has been able to offer financial assistance to several of the needy people of the parish in a more substantial way than mere handouts. Thank you for your wonderful generosity in using the social ministry envelopes that help this ministry. We also are entering the new financial year. Our parishioners are generous in giving their time talents and treasures in service of God and others. We closed the year well enough, considering the tasks we had in front of us. Our income for the year was $1,355,871.14. Our expenses for the year totaled $1,029,995.38. Our surplus amount was $325,875.76 of which $300,000.00 was applied to our debt repayment. I thank all the parishioners for your good will in supporting our church. Your sacrifices made it possible for the parish to meet our financial goals and to pay back some of the debt we owe to the diocese. I hope and pray that we may be able to continue to be generous in the upcoming year too. May God bless all of you and your families. 2

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Sharbel Makhlūf Tuesday: St. James Wednesday: Ss. Joachim and Anne Saturday: St. Martha FAITH & TRADITION THE MERCY, POWER, AND LOVE OF GOD The first reading today, from the book of Wisdom, makes its point over and over, at least five times in five verses! God is mighty, but lenient to all. God s power is shown in kindness and clemency, not in harshness and condemnation, and those who govern God s people must govern in the same way, with kindness. This loving kindness and gentleness is not contrary to God s might, but is a direct result of God s primacy over all. Who are we, then, to judge what is in the hearts of our fellow Christians and all people, when God commands justice with love and clemency? Likewise, the Holy Spirit makes up for our ignorance of what we need, speaking in a language we do not yet understand. But God knows our needs before we do, understands the intercessions of the Spirit, and helps us in our weakness. This is our hope: God s mercy, power, and love. TODAY S READINGS First Reading You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind (Wisdom 12:13, 16-19). Psalm Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86). Second Reading The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27). Gospel Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ex 14:5-18; Ex 15:1bc-6; Mt 12:38-42 Tuesday: 2 Cor 4:7-15; Ps 126:1bc-6; Mt 20:20-28 Wednesday: Ex 16:1-5, 9-15; Ps 78:18-19, 23-28; Jn 20:1-2, 11-18 Thursday: Ex 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20b; Dn 3:52-56; Mt 13:10-17 Friday: Ex 20:1-17; Ps 19:8-11; Mt 13:18-2 3 Saturday: Ex 24:3-8; Ps 34:2-11; Jn 11:19-27 or Lk 10:38-42 Sunday: 1 Kgs 3:5, 7-12; Ps 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-130; Rom 8:28-30; Mt 13:44-52 [44-46] 3
