St. Andrew UMC 3455 Canton Road Marietta, Georgia 30066 770-926-3488 www.thepumpkinchurch.org Preschool office: 770-592-7250 Church Fax line: 770-516-3827 Our Mission Statement St. Andrew United Methodist Church strives to be a family of caring, nurturing followers of Jesus Christ welcoming all those seeking to know and grow in God s service. October 2018 Nine Steps To Prayer Dr. E. Stanley Jones was one of the great leaders in Methodism, and as far as I know, the only person ever elected Bishop in the United Methodist Church to decline the office. Dr. Jones wrote much about prayer and the influential role it plays in the life of the Christian. In one of his books he suggests nine important steps we must take if we are to grow and pray effectively: 1. Decide what you want from prayer. 2. Ask yourself if this object you desire is a Christian object. 3. Write what you want from prayer. 4. Put your mind in a quiet and receptive mood. 5. Talk with God about your need. 6. Promise God how you will work with Him to make this prayer come true. 7. Do everything loving which comes to your mind about it. 8. Thank God for answering the prayer in His way. 9. Release the prayer from the center of your thoughts, committing it to His care. Dr. Jones writes, Prayer is not so much an act as an attitude. Prayer is opening the channels from our emptiness to God s fullness, from our defeat to His victory. In Christ, Mack

From the Sr. Associate Pastor s Desk North to Alaska We made this trip Aug. 17-27th. Wish you could have gone with us! On Day one we embarked from Vancouver; a picturesque city nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the snowcapped peaks of the Coast Mountain range. We were on board the Celebrity Millennium. Day 2 we cruised the Inside Passage sailing trough the most beautiful parts of Alaska. Day 3 we stopped at Ketchikan known as the "Gateway to Alaska." We got to worship at the First United Meth. Church of Ketchikan. The new minister had only been there five weeks. Day 4 we visited Icy Strait Point located near the city of Hoonah, the largest native Tlingit Indian settlement in Alaska and not far from Glacier Bay National Park. Home to a historic cannery, the port's connection to the sea is strong. Day 5 we stopped at Juneau founded during a gold rush in 1880 and it has maintained its rugged and pioneering style while developing a cosmopolitan style. It is also the State Capital and also has the Alaska State Museum with its collection of Russian Orthodox and Gold Rush relics. Day 6 we docked at Skagway. During the 1898 Gold Rush to the Yukon, thousands of gold seekers disembarked ships at Skagway to begin the 600-mile trip to the goldfields. Day 7 we saw the Hubbard Glacier; the longest river of ice in North America. It is also one of the most active glaciers of its kind in Alaska. We got close enough to hear the ice breaking. Day 8 we disembarked from the Celebrity Millennium at Seward and boarded a deluxe motorcoach and enjoyed a scenic trip to Anchorage to meet our Adventure Specialist and went to the beautiful destination of Denali where we had a relaxing night. Day 9 we departed on the Denali Natural History Tour (the expanded one) where we discovered the beauty of taiga forests and gazed at miles of rolling tundra while seeing wildlife in the shadow of Mount McKinley. In the afternoon we boarded the glass-domed train cars on the Wilderness Express for a luxurious ride to Fairbanks where we stayed overnight. Day 10 we enjoyed a fun-filled day in Fairbanks with a Fairbanks City Tour and a tour of the Gold Dredge where we panned for gold and found some! Day 11 we were transferred to the Fairbanks airport for our flight home. Terry and Mary Welcome New Member Brad Bosworth by transfer from another UMC Konrad & Katy Ahlin (Konrad by Reaffirmation of Faith and Katy by a Profession of Faith)

From the Associate Pastor s Desk Holy Courage Courage does not always roar, sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow. My mother shared this quote with me some weeks ago and it stuck with me as I thought about the ways in each of our lives when God calls us and the Holy Spirit nudges us along. The life of faith is one in which God continues to call us out of our comfort zones. We are challenged to forgive ourselves and others in hard and holy ways. We are filled with the Holy Spirit to go into uncharted territory in our lives, and in ministry in the church. And sometimes, we may not experience an outcome or results that make sense to us. We may sense a call from God in one direction, begin on that route, and discern that then another path must be taken. God is ever faithful! If there is anything I believe, it is that the Holy Spirit empowers us to have courage. Sometimes that is in seemingly small ways. Sometimes courage to continue following God and seeking after God means saying with quiet determination, God is faithful and so with God s help, I will be, too. I find great comfort in the writings of the apostle Paul to the Philippians as he reminds them (and us), I am sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus. (Phil 1:6) Whatever you are facing, God is with you. Sometimes putting one foot in front of the other is the best we can do. God is continually working on us and within us. And God will give us the power to try again tomorrow! In Christ, Beth
