Volume 21, Issue 10 2018 * Stuff from the staff : Charlie * Texts and Sermons: October 07 Mark 10:13-16 To Receive The Kingdom October 14 Mark 10:17-27 What Is That One Thing? October 21 Mark 10:35-45 The End Of The Line October 28 John 6:1-15 One More Open Letter to the Church World Communion Sunday: On October 07, we will observe World Communion Sunday and receive the Peace & Global Witness Offering. On this day we join with Christians around the world to celebrate the unity we find at the Table of the Lord. We receive the Offering to support the efforts of our congregation and denomination to spread the peace of Christ. Our congregation will use 25% of the Offering for local activities. The other 75% will help our partners in Mission Presbytery, Synod of the Sun, and the General Assembly as they work on behalf of God s peacemaking throughout the world. Meeting of Mission Presbytery: Mission Presbytery will meet at First Presbyterian Church, Mission, October 26 and 27. Wednesday Night Supper and Study: We will resume Wednesday Night gatherings beginning November 7th

* Stuff from the staff : More from Charlie * Reformation Sunday: Traditionally celebrated on October 31 st, Reformation Day commemorates the movement started by Martin Luther in the 16th century. On Halloween of 1517, Luther, a German monk, nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Church, expressing his concerns over corruption found in the Catholic Church. One of the primary concerns of this open letter to the church was the selling of indulgences in order to release people from having to serve penance for their sins, which he considered trying to buy their way into heaven. His act opened up a debate with religious scholars of the time that eventually lead to the Protestant Reformation. Presbyterians celebrate the tradition that grounds their faith on Reformation Sunday, always the last Sunday in October. It is an important day, for it allows us to reflect on and celebrate our history, and to honor the core belief system of Presbyterianism. As some of you may remember, it has been my custom on many Reformation Sundays to stand with my long-ago colleague and offer an open letter of my own to the church I love, not to be nailed anywhere, but to examine and reflect upon what it means to be the Church here and now. On Sunday, October 28, my last as Pastor of this Church, I will offer One More Open Letter to the Church. A very special Thank You from the Worship Committee for your participation. September Happenings: Sunday, September 9 - Harper & Kensington, the twin baby girls of Jere and Tiffany McNeeley were baptized. Both parents grew up in our church and were married here as well. It was a special day. The little girls are the granddaughters of Kelly and Scott McNeeley, long-time members of First Presbyterian Church of Rockport. Sunday, September 23 - After 28 years at 1 st Pres., Pastor Charlie seems to know the sermons we need to hear and seemed to be making each one better than the week before. In addition, our choir delivered a beautiful version of Here I Am, Lord. When they finished, you could have heard a pin drop. It was moving and beautifully performed. 3

Stuff More From the Worship Committee USHERS ARE: Janet Gaskamp and Pati Vincent Communion is October 2, which is World Communion Sunday. Flower sponsorships: The 7th and 21st in October are unassigned. Sponsorships do not require a dedication or reason. The sign up calendar is on the bulletin board outside the Mission Room. New Items: Pastor Charlie announced his retirement from First Presbyterian effective Oct. 31, 2018. This means we will be moving into the Thanksgiving/Christmas season with ministers with whom we recruit to do single services during this period until an interim minister is named by the Session. Adelaide Marlatt & Mary Hime volunteered to represent the Worship Committee in recruiting ministers to conduct services for November and December, 2018. At this release, all of the dates in November and December have been filled with ministers, recruited because they were either requested by our members or recommended by Mission Presbytery. They include the Chaplin of Mo Ranch, the Chaplin for Hospice of San Antonio, and several others who were selected because we felt they would be truly inspiring and would have a good message for this time at First Presbyterian as we begin this new journey. Ministering to Women News for Presbyterian Women The PW women resumed their regular monthly meetings on September 4th, the first Tuesday of the month. It was great to be back together doing the planning and hearing the reports on the many, great projects PW carries out during the year. Reports were given about the operations and donations of Castaways, the Neet Feet (a program which PW set up whereby they work with Counselors in ACISD to allow counselor-identified students to purchase shoes at Walmart when they need them) and the Good Samaritans program which we support. The reminder was made that both Castaways and Good Samaritans are needing workers (even for a few hours). I hear the people you meet there are great, and love to have a good time while serving our community and doing God s work. Scholarships programs for ABC School and the college student currently in our BEAS program were discussed and information was shared about the upcoming semester program. NEW BUSINESS: The dates for Presbyterian Women s Spring Gathering at Mo Ranch, Hunt, Texas, will be March 22-24, 2019. The theme is The Gift of Friendship, it will be hosted by Covenant Presbyterian, Austin, Texas. Twenty+/- women attended this wonderful event in Spring, 2018. Plan now to attend this upcoming spring. The deadline to register will be reported soon. Bible Study 2018-19 The date of the first Bible Study was September 25th at 11:45. This deals with the promises God gives to us. In this study, we explore the many scriptures in the Bible where God gives the assurance of his presence in our lives. Come, join with others who want to draw closer to God s word during our group bible study. Our 1st lesson theme God is not only a Promise Maker, but also a Promise Keeper should be very assuring for our lives. Come be reminded and strengthened by this study. Sunday School Happenings: Parkie Luce reported she will be using the Jesse Tree with her students in Sunday School this year and asked for help in doing the Prep work to get all of the pieces cut and prepared for this project. If you have time and a sharp pair of scissors, call the church 729-6251 and let them know. Save the Date SATURDAY OCTOBER 6TH IS THE DATE OF THIS YEARS HOLIDAY SALE! Veronika Camehl and Pati Vincent are coordinating the event which will feature the sale of gently used Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorating items. We need the help of anyone who can assist with pricing and sale preparation. Call Veronika (361-500-6675) to find out where you are most needed, then come to the Sale on the 6th. 7
