Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Leigh Clark Minister of Music & Youth Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Dear church family and friends, People sometimes ask, Why? when bad things happen. Doubt and anger in the moment can cloud whether or Who God is. Leslie Weatherhead, a British chaplain during World War II, had a very different idea. He said when good things happen, do we also say Why? In other words, do we remember to give thanks to God? Deep below our impulse to give thanks and be grateful lies a spiritual current. The events for which we are thankful point beyond to a deeper cause. The Bible is explicit about the One to Whom our thanks and praise should be directed. The Psalms, the worship book of the Old Testament is loaded with thanksgivings to God. Psalm 9:1 says I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. As we celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday, remember the One Who has given us so much, not withholding His own Son. Notice the impulse to give thanks each day and direct it to our faithful and loving God. Giving thanks to God for each of you with love, Pastor Mike How to Join Wise Baptist Church: Express one of the following to the Pastor during the closing hymn: Transfer of Letter Transfer membership to Wise Baptist Church Baptism Desire to express faith in Christ through baptism Statement of Faith Baptized believer not on a membership roll Watch Care Desire to be connected to our Church family without official membership Welcome! From Leigh November 22 Rick Collie Thank you, Sanctuary choir for the marvelous new anthem on Sunday. We were especially blessed with our guest musician, Matthew Rhoten from Union HS on tenor sax. Can t Carry These Burdens Alone is a wonderful reminder of our need for God and His provision of friendship and fellowship especially through the church. We are all going through something. No matter how perfect someone s life may look on the outside, there are deep needs, hurts and struggles and maybe even loneliness, grief or physical pain. We truly aren t meant to bear these things alone. (Can I get an Amen?) I encourage you to take time/make time to reach out to each other this holiday season a call, hug, card goes a long way! I read a blog by Ann Voscamp this week that really resonated with me. She said that Thanksgiving is Thanksliving. Think about that for a moment. We should show our thanks by living in a way that reflects God s blessings in our lives. How different would our lives be if we choose to live it in thanks rather than bitterness? If we choose love over hate; if we choose to rise to the challenges and struggles rather than wallow in self-pity? What if we celebrate who God made us rather than live a life of comparison with others? Change begins with me. Change begins with you. I am so thankful for Wise Baptist Church and the many years that we have served together. I am thankful for your love and for the friendships. I am thankful for ALL of the moments we have shared. I look forward to seeing all of you on the next Lord s Day! Happy Thanksgiving! I am praying for you this week; pray for each other, too. The Jubilation Ringers will rehearse on Nov. 27 at 7:45 pm to prepare for The Inn on Friday, December 2 and the Cantata. Oh my! We had a wonderful time at the pre-thanksgiving FLOCK-IN! There were 21 of us in all! Special thanks to all of the parents who provided nourishment for our event! We played games (killer, trainwreck, gaga ball, capture the candy, jungle pong, butt volleyball, wall ball, sardines), went FLOCKING, and had an exciting alphabet scavenger hunt (the Walmart employees weren t exactly sure what we were up to showing up after midnight!). We also spent time sharing the many things that we are thankful for which led to our time of devotion on God s greatest gift to us His only Son! Once we accept that gift, we must share it. I challenged the youth to pray about people they can share God s gift with during the Advent season. They received an Advent devotional book, Hark and several copies of the Life Book that they are encouraged to give away! Pray for our kids. We are very blessed! We will have youth on Sunday, November 27 at 6 pm. LIGHT will practice during that time for their upcoming performance at the Cantata.

Reception You Are Cordially Invited to a Reception Honoring Leigh & Mark Clark Saturday, December 17 3:0o pm Wise Baptist Fellowship Hall HANDBELLS The Jubilation Ringers will ring at The Inn on Friday, December 2 at 7:00 pm. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Wise Baptist Church collected 149 boxes. Our relay center collected 2,878. And our Southwest VA team collected 10,237 boxes! What an amazing ministry! These boxes will bring joy and great NEWS to children around the world! Special thanks to Rebecca Osborne for her leadership with the Relay center and to Jim Collie for organizing the WBC effort. And, to all of you for your gifts of time, money and prayers!

Children-in-Action is our Wednesday program for our children. Each week they learn about God and His incredible love for each of us! They also learn ways to put that love into ACTION! Our leaders challenged the children to earn money for their own Operation Christmas Child boxes! They accepted that challenge and earned over $115! Our Children-in-Action are great shoppers! They were able to fill 8 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child!
