March 22, 2009 Ordination to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament Jocelyn C. Cadwallader
Service of Worship and Ordination The beginning of the prelude is a call to silent, personal preparation for the worship of God. Gather in God s Name Prelude Meditation on the First Prelude of J. S. Bach Charles Gounod Finale from Sonata in F George Frideric Handel Welcome John W. Vest Opening Sentences Laurie Empen Leader: Holy One, open us to the movement of your Spirit: People: free our dreams; open our eyes, ears, minds, and hearts to the glory of life. Leader: Holy One, open us to the movement of your Spirit: People: open our hearts in rebirth of wonder; open our defenses, and delight us in our diversities! Leader: Holy One, open us to the movement of your Spirit: open our futures and deepen our faith; free us from fear, and bring us into community in your Spirit. People: We gather, expecting the winds of love to blow through us, the fire of passion to burn in us! Leader: Holy One, open us to the movement of your Spirit as we worship in this place. *Hymn The Summons Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in you and you in me? 2 *Stand as you are able.
Will you love the you you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you ve found to reshape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I ll move and live and grow in you and you in me. Affirmation of Faith Gordon Zerkel In life and in death, we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of people long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives. Amen. (A Brief Statement of Faith, PCUSA) Offering and Prayer of Dedication Gordon Zerkel Offertory Anthem God So Loved the World John Goss God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world though him might be saved. Amen. *Doxology (The Hymnal, 592) The service of ordination to the ministry of word and sacrament Constitutional Questions of the Ordinand Joy Douglas Strome Constitutional Questions of the Congregation Calum MacLeod Prayer of Ordination Joy Douglas Strome Declaration of Ordination and Welcome Joy Douglas Strome Anointing of the Ordinand Deborah Mullen 4

Tonight s Prayer of Confession comes from Companion to the Revised Common Lectionary: Volume 2: All Age Worship Year A by Julie M. Hume. The unfolding flower growing out of a crown of thorns, shown on this week s bulletin cover, provides an apt metaphor for the new life arising from Christ s death and resurrection. It is carved into the underside of the octagonal sounding board over the Fourth Church pulpit. Welcome to Fourth Church Inquirers Class explores Presbyterian history and beliefs.
