Sacred Heart Council Bulletin September 2017 General Information Council meetings Knights: 1st Tuesday of the Month, 7 p.m. in Council Chambers A Message from our Worthy Grand Knight Brother Knights: Ladies Auxiliary: 1st Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m. in the K of C Hall Corporate Communion Second Sunday of the month, at the 9 a.m. Mass at IHM I remember when I first joined the Knights and when I first met with a membership committee. They asked me why I wanted to join. I answered that God has blessed my life and that I wanted to give back to others. They accepted that answer, I joined, and immediately started helping with activities. The council I joined had Bingo and many a weekend my family and I worked the concession kitchen (my daughter got community credits). At the end of the night I worn out, but I asked myself, did I See more on Page 2 Sacred Heart Council No. 3137 Don Larsen Assembly No. 688 401 Trinity Drive Los Alamos, NM 87544 (505) 662.2070
A Message From Our Worthy Grand Knight... do something for somebody else tonight? With the money we raised to give to charities, the answer was yes! In other activities, such as bending over a table assembling sandwiches for the homeless shelter, or here in Los Alamos making enchiladas for the parish, I was tired and complained, oh, my aching back! Yet I still asked myself, did I do something today for somebody else? Again, here in Los Alamos, working weekends with Habitat for Humanity building a house for a needy family, I was exhausted by the end of the day. Again I asked myself, did I do something for somebody else today? Our council has many activities during the year and we are coming up with more ideas that will either help someone in need directly or allow us to donate money to a charitable cause. If you have a cause that you would like your brother Knights to participate in, please let us know. We would love to help you. My leadership style on activities is to let you who have a passion for a cause to run it, to let you ensure it is done the way you think it should be done. Others and I will be there to give a helping hand. Come to our next business or social committee meeting and give us your activity suggestions. Additionally, make a promise this month of September to yourself, to tell yourself and your family lets go do something for somebody else! Golf tournament Brother Knights: Coming up on September 15 th is our annual Golf Tournament. This event and the subsequent ability for our council to award scholarships to high school seniors are both very worthy activities for us knights to provide to our parish and community. Both are highly visible activities that we offer Los Alamos. In fact, I bet that if you ask anyone in our community, what the Knights are known for, most likely they will answer either the Golf Tournament, or Scholarships, or both. Especially since all the proceeds after expenses go directly to well deserving and needy students, who may not otherwise be able to attend college. Now I mentioned expenses, some of See more on Page 4 Program Directors Auxiliary Officers Program Director: Martin Aguilera Church Director: Deacon Don Lucero Community Director: Steve Ciddio Council Director: David Jolley Culture of Life Director: Kenneth Lee Family Director: Bob Devine Membership Director: Michael Weiss People With Intellectual Disabilities Director: Tim Zimmerly Youth Director: Vacant President: Nancy Kossar Vice President: Annie Trujillo-Garcia Secretary: Melissa Weiss Treasurer: Gloria Lopez Hospitality: Jo McCarthy
Golf tournament... which are items with our logo offered at the tournament, such as coffee cups and ball caps, etc. These are necessary items to generate interest in the golfers of our town to register and play. This is also good advertising of who we are, and a reminder of what we do for others. Remnants of these items from last year s tournament were stored upstairs in the hall attic for the next time. Recently, when the Golf Committee went to retrieve them the ball caps were missing, about $900 in inventory. To the person(s) responsible: SHAME on you! To take those hats without permission for whatever reason is NOT becoming of a Knight of our order! Golf tournament... up with bad jokes, ugly comments, and even insults, both verbally and emails, about our council and us. A couple of examples are we are just a group of good ol boys sitting around drinking beer, or one time at Corporate Communion I was simply greeting you at the door and handing out badges, when a lady told me I see the Knights are here begging for money. More recently are the emails I received concerning the Gun Show rental by the Colombian Club. The worst actually come from fellow Knights. Yet each and every occurrence I have forgiven the offender, and I will continue to do so. My point to you the responsible person(s) for the missing ball caps, I FORGIVE YOU, TOO! Yet, there is a consequence. The Golf Committee had to reorder 84 new hats at $15 apiece, which will have to be subtracted from the proceeds of the tournament. The consequence meaning is that is $1,260 that will NOT be going to a deserving student or students in financial need as a scholarship! After reading this, if there is a change of heart, and the ball caps mysteriously reappear at the hall, no questions will be asked, but you will have our council s appreciation.
