This past year has been a trying one. We have seen our country divided more deeply than I can remember. Our ancestors are under attack and their symbols demonized. Monuments to the dead and fallen have been desecrated and destroyed. It s easy for the weak to lay guilt and blame upon the dead. They remain silent in their repose. These uneducated bubble gum historians wish to destroy any resemblances of free speech. free will and free thought... My brothers, WE, the sons, are our ancestors only voice and although I m not asking anyone to become a Maryter. I do ask that you renew your commitment to your brave ancestors and to the cause for which they fought. Deo Vindice God will Vindicate it is our call, our montra. Believe in his will brothers and he will see us through. Have faith! This Thanksgiving I will thank the lord for the blessings I have received including a new wife. In whom my faith grows stronger and in whom I have been given the duty to cherish and protect. Be Thankful men to those who wear the uniform today and are far from their homes, missing their families. Give them strength, give us peace and bring them home once and for all. Amen SCV CHARGE To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, We submit the vindication of the cause for which we fought; to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier s good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles he loved and which made him glorious and which you also cherish. News from around the confederacy Maryland Likely to Recall Confederate License Plates Maryland will soon start recalling license plates emblazoned with the Confederate flag after a federal judge lifted an 18-year-old injunction keeping them in circulation. The state joins Virginia, where many owners of the tags are defying the recall, Fox News reports. The effort in both states comes in the wake of the June shooting deaths of nine churchgoers in South Carolina by a self-proclaimed white supremacist who took pictures of himself with guns and the Confederate flag and posted them online before the massacre. According to The Baltimore Sun, Maryland had been rebuffed in previous attempts in the 1990s to yank the Sons of Confederate Veterans plates, bowing to a ruling by a federal District Court that they were protected as free speech. But in June, the Supreme Court ruled license plates were a form of government speech, and could be rejected by states; on Thursday, District Court Judge Marvin Garbis lifted the injunction, the Sun reports. The order goes into effect Nov. 17, but it s unclear when the recall will begin, the Sun reports. I look forward to the day when these plates are no longer on the road, Attorney General Brian Frosh said, the Sun reports. This flag is a painful symbol that divides us, conjuring images of hate and subjugation. It has no place in any contemporary government use. Virginia announced its recall of Confederate plates in August, and as of Oct. 4, it s been illegal to drive with them. But there s been little cooperation. Of 1,600 Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates on the road, only 187 have been returned, TV station WAVY reports. I can t fight on the battlefield like they did, but I can fight however I can in modern times and I will not give them plates up, Kevin Collier, who s commander of the Stonewall Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and whose relatives fought in the Civil War, tells the station. Next thing you know, they re going to say you can t wear blue on Monday, you know, or you can t wear yellow on Thursday. Where s it going to end? 4
1862 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation To the People of the Confederate States: Once more upon the plains of Manassas have our armies been blessed by the Lord of Hosts with a triumph over our enemies. It is my privilege to invite you once more to His footstool, not now in the garb of fasting and sorrow, but with joy and gladness, to render thanks for the great mercies received at His hand. A few months since, and our enemies poured forth their invading legions upon our soil. They laid waste our fields, polluted our altars and violated the sanctity of our homes. Around our capital they gathered their forces, and with boastful threats, claimed it as already their prize. The brave troops which rallied to its defense have extinguished these vain hopes, and, under the guidance of the same almighty hand, have scattered our enemies and driven them back in dismay. Uniting these defeated forces and the various armies which had been ravaging our coasts with the army of invasion in Northern Virginia, our enemies have renewed their attempt to subjugate us at the very place where their first effort was defeated, and the vengeance of retributive justice has overtaken the entire host in a second and complete overthrow. To this signal success accorded to our arms in the East has been graciously added another equally brilliant in the West. On the very day on which our forces were led to victory on the Plains of Manassas, in Virginia, the same Almighty arm assisted us to overcome our enemies at Richmond, in Kentucky. Thus, at one and the same time, have two great hostile armies been stricken down, and the wicked designs of their armies been set at naught. In such circumstances, it is meet and right that, as a people, we should bow down in adoring thankfulness to that gracious God who has been our bulwark and defense, and to offer unto him the tribute of thanksgiving and praise. In his hand is the issue of all events, and to him should we, in an especial manner, ascribe the honor of this great deliverance. Now, therefore, I, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States, do issue this, my proclamation, setting apart Thursday, the 18th day of September inst., as a day of prayer and thanksgiving to Almighty God for the great mercies vouchsafed to our people, and more especially for the triumph of our arms at Richmond and Manassas; and I do hereby invite the people of the Confederate States to meet on that day at their respective places of public worship, and to unite in rendering thanks and praise to God for these great mercies, and to implore Him to conduct our country safely through the perils which surround us, to the final attainment of the blessings of peace and security. Given under my hand and the seal of the Confederate States, at Richmond, this fourth day of September, A.D.1862. JEFFERSON DAVIS 5
Letter from Md Commander 6 Confederate Greetings Gentlemen, Please forward this e-mail to your respective camps. And, if you can not do so, please let me know. While most e-mails have reached everyone, there have been some previous e-mails that were not received by entire camps. This is not good - especially now. I apologize that I ve not responded sooner with specific information about the license plates. At the risk of making excuses, personal matters have consumed the majority of my time and attention for nearly the past two weeks. Therefore, I need your help to ensure that the facts about the plates are promulgated to every compatriot in the division - especially if they have SCV plates. We will discuss the SCV tags and how we wish to proceed from here at the Saturday, November 7th meeting at Riviera Beach Library. Division Adjutant Klima sent a notice about that meeting several weeks ago. Here are some statistics regarding our tags: # of men in the Maryland Division: ~470 # of SCV tags issued since 1995: ~400+ # of SCV current tags on the road now: ~178 2014 Maryland population: 5,976,000 (I don t know if that statistic includes Dreamers/New Americans.) % of Maryland Division compatriots with current tags (assuming 1:1 ratio of compatriots to vehicles): 0.003% The ratio is not totally accurate since some compatriots have more than one vehicle with SCV tags. # of law firms contacted to represent the Maryland Division to keep our tags: 5 # of law firms that agreed to represent the Maryland Division to keep our tags: 0 One of the law firms we contacted was The Rutherford Institute. You may recall that this is the same law firm which successfully represented the Maryland Division in 1997. That paints a painful and unpleasant picture. We all hate bad news. But, it is time to face reality - our tags are going to be recalled - most likely in November. Despite efforts to secure legal representation to contest the lifting of the injunction within the allotted time frame, no law firm was willing to take our case nor can we even begin to afford $500+/hour for a private law firm to pursue such a course of action. The First Amendment, fairness, the obvious pointlessness of a recall, and a host of other reasons for which we should be allowed to keep our tags notwithstanding, the State of Maryland does not care if t they insult and anger 0.003% of the population. The governor, the attorney general, the MVA, and just about every other politician in Maryland do not care. This battle is over with regard to the current SCV Maryland license plates. We can consider another logo and try (in this very politically correct state) to get another tag if we want to pursue that course of action. I would like us in the interim to consider a license plate frame as a way to keep the logo with the tags. We ve already contacted SCVHQ about this option which will be discussed at the meeting. By the way... what you do when you get your letter from the MVA to recall your tags is your business. Is anyone else worried about parking their vehicles on the street because someone might steal their tags? American by Birth & Southern by the Grace of God, Jay
