Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! JOHN 1:29 4

That s exactly what we hope this Advent guide will help you do during a season normally full of busy-ness. Once a week we want you to slow down, take a deep breath, and choose at least one thing from this guide to use in your time alone or with family and friends to fix your eyes on Jesus. In this book, you will find prayers, suggested scripture reading, questions, and activities to help you engage in the real reason we celebrate Christmas: the birth of the Savior of the whole world. There is even a guide for families with younger children which digs deeper into stories found in the Jesus Storybook Bible. If you choose to utilize this portion and do not have one of the Storybook Bibles, visit our Guest Services desk and let them know. We will do our best to provide one for you. May your Christmas be full of the hope, joy, love, and peace that only Christ can bring. -The Grace Staff 5

HOPE W E E K O N E Isaiah 9:1-7 Isaiah 11:1-10 7

I II READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER (for families with younger children) Isaiah 9:1-7, Isaiah 11:1-10 Who is the passage talking about? What does it say he will do? What is the significance of this passage? Why does it matter? How does it impact your view of Christmas? Read Operation No More Tears p 144 in The Jesus Storybook Bible What is the name of the man in this story? What was his job? What was the name of the plan God showed him? Who was God going to send? What was He going to do for the people? Whose birth are we celebrating this Christmas? What do you think it means to celebrate? And how can our family celebrate this special season? 8

III EXPERIENCE THE WORD TOGETHER In song: Look up the song, O Come, O Come Emmanuel and sing it or read the lyrics together. You can look in a hymnal or online. In prayer: Pray A Present Salvation from The Valley of Vision (pg 10). In your neighborhood: Invite a neighbor to share a meal with you and/or your family one night this week just to get to know them. Ask them what they are hoping for this Christmas. For families with young kids: Involve the whole family in the planning process! You can have your kids make invitations to deliver to the neighbors or design a menu to put at each place setting. In your community: Begin today thinking and praying about the impact you might have in your community, whether through a charity or through volunteering. Write down any ideas and listen to where the Spirit might be leading. 9

A PRESENT SALVATION CREATOR AND REDEEMER GOD, Author of all existence, source of all blessedness, I adore thee for making me capable of knowing thee, for giving me reason and conscience, for leading me to desire thee; I praise thee for the revelation of thyself in The gospel, for thy heart as a dwelling place of pity for thy thoughts of peace towards me, for thy patience and thy graciousness, for the vastness of thy mercy. Thou hast moved my conscience to know how the guilty can be pardoned, the unholy sanctified, the poor enriched, May I be always amongst those who not only hear but know thee, who walk with and rejoice in thee, who take thee at thy word and find life there. Keep me always longing for a present salvation in Holy Spirit comforts and rejoicings, for spiritual graces and blessings, for help to value my duties as well as my privileges. 10

May I cherish simplicity and godly sincerity of character. Help me to be in reality before thee as in appearance I am before men, to be religious before I profess religion, to leave the world before I enter the church, to set my affections on things above, to shun forbidden follies and vanities, to be a dispenser as well as a partaker of grace, to be prepared to bear evil as well as to do good. O God, make me worthy of this calling, that the name of Jesus may be glorified in me and I in him. The Valley of Vision, pg 20 November 2017 Used with permission from The Banner of Truth UK 11

LOVE W E E K T W O Luke 2:1-7 13

I II READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER (for families with younger children) Luke 2:1-7 Who do we read about in this passage? What is happening in the passage? Where is this all happening? What is the significance of this event? Why does it matter? How does it impact your view of Christmas? Read He s Here! p. 176 in The Jesus Storybook Bible Who visits Mary? What does he tell her? How do you think this made her feel? Where did Mary and Joseph have to go? Have you ever been on a really long trip? What happened when they tried to find a place to stay in Bethlehem? Where did they end up sleeping? What do you think it was like with all of those animals? What did it sound like? Smell like? Feel like? The title of this story is, He s Here! Who is here now? 14

III EXPERIENCE THE WORD TOGETHER In song: Look in a hymnal or online for the song, Away in a Manger. Sing or read the song together. In prayer: Pray Love Shed Abroad from The Valley of Vision (pg 16). In your neighborhood: Is there a new family or person in your neighborhood, at your work, or in your school? If there isn t anyone new, is there someone who needs cheering up? Put together a small package to help welcome/encourage them. For families with young kids: You can invite your kids to help make the list of items that you want to put in the package. Have them draw a picture on the front of a card that you drop in the box. In your community: Consider last week s challenge; where are you in narrowing down a way to impact your community? If you can act now, do so give of your time, talent, or money as the Spirit leads you to do. 15

LOVE SHED ABROAD GRACIOUS GOD, My heart praises thee for the wonder of thy love in Jesus; He is heaven s darling, but is for me the incarnate, despised, rejected, crucified sin-bearer; In him thy grace has almost out-graced itself, In him thy love to rebels has reached its height; O to love thee with a love like this! My heart is stone, melt it with thy love, My heart is locked, let thy love be the master key to open it; O Father, I adore thee for thy great love in the gift of Jesus, O Jesus, I bless thee for resigning thy life for me, O Holy Spirit, I thank thee for revealing to me this mystery; Great God, let thy Son see in me the travail of his soul! Bring me away from my false trusts to rest in him, and him only. Let me not be so callous to his merit as not to love him, so indifferent to his blood as not to desire cleansing. 16

Lord Jesus, Master, Redeemer, Saviour, come and take entire possession of me; this is thy right by purchase. In the arms of love enfold and subdue my willful spirit. Take, sanctify, use my every faculty. I am not ashamed of my hope, nor has my confidence led me into confusion. I trusted thee regarding my innumerable sins, and thou has cast them behind thy back. I trusted in thee when evils encompassed me, and thou broughtest me out into a wealthy place. I trusted in thee in an hour of distress, and thou didst not fail me, though faith trembled. O God of the eternal choice, O God of the restored possession purchased on the tree, O God of the effectual call, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, I adore thy glory, honour, majesty, power, dominion for ever. JOY W E E K T H R E E Luke 2:8-20 21

I II READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER (for families with younger children) Luke 2:8-20 Who do we read about in this passage? What is happening in the passage? Where is this all happening? What is the significance of this event? Why does it matter? How does it impact your view of Christmas? Read The Light of the Whole World p. 184 in The Jesus Storybook Bible Who did God send to sing about the birth of his son? Who heard their singing? What are shepherds like? What do you think they felt when they heard the angels singing? What did they do right after they heard the angels message? Where did they go? Do you ever feel left out? Do you know someone who feels left out? How does it make you feel to know that God sent his special message to a group of guys who were left out a lot? What does this tell you about what God is like? 22

III EXPERIENCE THE WORD TOGETHER In song: Look in a hymnal or online for the song, Joy to the World. Sing or read the song together. In prayer: Pray The Gift of Gifts from The Valley of Vision (pg 24). In your neighborhood: Is there a friend or neighbor who you know is often overlooked, maybe left out? Invite them to coffee or dinner just to get to know them and let them know how valuable they are. For families with young kids: Challenge your kids to write a letter to that person, and drop it in their mailbox with a sweet treat! In your community: If you have not decided what you will do to impact your community this Christmas, now is the time to decide. What organizations are making a difference in your schools? In your children? In the neighborhood? Is there a way you can support them? If you ve already contributed in this way, pray that God would spur the Church to be exceedingly generous in the community this Christmas season so as to demonstrate the love of Christ. 23

THE GIFT OF GIFTS O SOURCE OF ALL GOOD, What shall I render to thee for the gift of gifts, thine own dear Son, begotten, not created, my Redeemer, proxy, surety, substitute, his self-emptying incomprehensible, his infinity of love beyond the heart s grasp. Herein is wonder of wonders: he came below to raise me above, was born like me that I might become like him. Herein is love; when I cannot rise to him he draws near on wings of grace, to raise me to himself. Herein is power; when Deity and humanity were infinitely apart he united them in indissoluble unity, the uncreated and the created. Herein is wisdom; when I was undone, with no will to return to him, and no intellect to devise recovery, he came, God-incarnate, to save me to the uttermost, as man to die my death, to shed satisfying blood on my behalf, to work out a perfect righteousness for me. 24

O God, take me in spirit to the watchful shepherds, and enlarge my mind; let me hear good tidings of great joy, and hearing, believe, rejoice, praise, adore, my conscience bathed in an ocean of repose, my eyes uplifted to a reconciled Father; place me with ox, ass, camel, goat, to look with them upon my Redeemer s face, and in him account myself delivered from sin; let me with Simeon clasp the new-born child to my heart, embrace him with undying faith, exulting that he is mine and I am his. In him thou hast given me so much that heaven can give no more. The Valley of Vision, pg 28 November 2017 Used with permission from The Banner of Truth UK 25

PEACE W E E K F O U R Matthew 2:1-12 27

I II READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER (for families with younger children) Matthew 2:1-12 Who do we read about in this passage? What is happening in the passage? Where is this all happening? What is the significance of this event? Why does it matter? How does it impact your view of Christmas? Read The King of All Kings p. 192 in The Jesus Storybook Bible Who are the three men in this story? What did they see in the sky? How did they react when they saw the sign in the sky? Where did they go? How long do you think it took them to get there? Why was it surprising to them to find Jesus in a stable? What do you think about where Jesus, the King of all Kings, was born? 28

III EXPERIENCE THE WORD TOGETHER In song: Look online for the song, Peace Has Come by Hillsong. Listen to and/or sing the song together. In prayer: Pray Repose from The Valley of Vision (pg 30). In your neighborhood: Bake cookies with friends or family and take them to your neighbors or to a neighborhood police/fire department. For families with young kids: Have them decorate brown paper bags with crayons, markers, ribbon, glitter...whatever you can think of to have them make a festive Christmas cookie package. In your community: How is God calling you to engage on a more regular basis in your community, not just around Christmas time? Is there a passion he is stirring in you to serve others? Write it down, pray, and then commit to obey! Write the next steps out. 29

REPOSE HEAVENLY FATHER, My faith is in thee, My expectation is from thee, My love goes out toward thee, I believe thee, accept thy Word, acquiesce in thy will, rely on thy promises, trust thy providence. I bless thee that the court of conscience proves me to be thine. I do not need signs and wonders to believe, for thy Word is sure truth. I have cast my anchor in the port of peace, knowing that present and future are in nail-pierced hands. Thou art so good, wise, just holy, that no mistake is possible to thee. Thou art fountain and source of all law; what thou commandest is mine to obey. I yield to thy sovereignty all that I am and have; do thou with me as thou wilt. Thou hast given me silence in my heart in place of murmurings and complaints. 30

Keep my wishes from growing into willings, my willings from becoming fault-finding with thy providences, and have mercy on me. If I sin and am rebellious, help me to repent; then take away my mourning and give me music; remove my sackcloth and adorn me with beauty; take away my sighs and fill my mouth with songs; and when I am restored and rest in thee give me summer weather in my heart. CHRIST C H R I S T M A S D A Y John 1:1-34 35

I II READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER READ AND DISCUSS THE WORD TOGETHER (for families with younger children) John 1:1-34 Who do we read about in this passage? What is happening in the passage? Where is this all happening? What is the significance of this event? Why does it matter? How does it impact your view of Christmas? Read Heaven Breaks Through p 200 in The Jesus Storybook Bible Who was the other baby born about the same time as Jesus? What was his name? What was he like? What did John tell the people? What does it mean to be baptized? What does the story say that it showed? Who came to John to be baptized? What did the voice from heaven say when Jesus was baptized? 36

III EXPERIENCE THE WORD TOGETHER In song: Look in a hymnal or online for the song, O Holy Night. Sing or read the song together. In prayer: Pray Christ the Word from The Valley of Vision (pg 38). In your neighborhood: Is there someone who has no place to go for Christmas? Invite them to spend the day or share a Christmas meal with your family. For families with young kids: Have the kids use sidewalk chalk to decorate the walkway or driveway that leads to your house. This can be a sweet welcome for your guest! If you don t have a sidewalk, have them make a poster or welcome sign for your door. In your community: Make a plan. How are you going to engage in your community this year? Write out the steps you will need to take. 37

CHRIST THE WORD MY FATHER, In a world of created changeable things, Christ and his Word alone remain unshaken. O to forsake all creatures, to rest as a stone on him the foundation, to abide in him, be borne up by him! For all my mercies come through Christ, who has designed, purchased, promised, effected them. How sweet it is to be near him, the Lamb, filled with holy affections! When I sin against thee I cross thy will, love, life, and have no comforter, no creature, to go to. My sin is not so much this or that particular evil, but my continual separation, disunion, distance from thee, and having a loose spirit towards thee. But thou hast given me a present, Jesus thy Son, as Mediator between thyself and my soul, as middle-man who in a pit holds both him below and him above, for only he can span the chasm breached by sin, and satisfy divine justice. May I always lay hold upon this Mediator, as a realized object of faith, and alone worthy by his love to bridge the gulf. 38

Let me know that he is dear to me by his Word; I am one with him by the Word on his part, and by faith on mine; If I oppose the Word I oppose my Lord when he is most near; If I receive the Word I receive my Lord wherein he is nigh. O thou who hast the hearts of all men in thine hand, form my heart according to the Word, according to the image of thy Son, So shall Christ the Word, and his Word, be my strength and comfort.
