K-W NAVAL ASSOCIATION JULY AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2015 Well Shipmates, I will go out on a limb and say summer is finally here for us to enjoy, no promises though. First of all I would like to thank the outgoing Ladies and Men s Executives, or what was left, for all their hard work over the past year. A lot of positions pulled double duty and the club appreciates your efforts to keep things running. Welcome to the new Ladies and Men s Executive for this term. It was touch and go to have a Ladies executive this term but a big thank you to the Ladies that stepped up at the June Meeting to fill, or nearly fill the roster. The men have had their difficulties again this year as well but the Secretary Position was filled at the June Meeting, we still need a Treasurer, Sports and House Director. Pete Beutler has been filling in with the help of John Fraser and yours truly balancing the cash and Terri Leigh on payroll. We have a volunteer to learn/train the position to help out, thanks to Michael Bath for stepping up to help out. Dennis Gow has expressed an interest in helping out with the Vice Presidents position, a meeting will be set in the near future with Ron, Dennis and Terri Leigh to get everyone up to date on some changes that have been made to the rental hall procedures. Anyone who has some time and thinks they can help PLEASE see me, we are all volunteers and extra hands makes lighter work for all. 2
Sales have been steady the past couple of months which means our financial position is improving, we are getting our inventory back on track, but we continue to have to monitor it weekly or more often as needed. If we continue to have discrepancies we may resort to end of shift inventories on specific items to cure the problem, many bars do that but again for volunteers it is a lot of extra work! The liquor dispenser has been acting up recently and we are in the process of getting it back up and running, meanwhile the old shot glass will be doing the job. The Installation Of Officers was done by Mel Barrie this year, thank you Mel, it is nice when you ask someone to help out and he says yes without hesitation, that s what members do, thanks again Mel. Welcome to our new bartenders, Barbara and Kim, please introduce yourself to the new girls and make them feel at home, Marilyn Park is also back to fill in as she is able, welcome back Marilyn. Mike Turos, Membership, and I will be sitting down to decide on eligibility for club medals and how to implement the presentations. There will be a number of members who will be eligible but cost factors will determine how many medals will be issued each year. More on that as decisions are made. As most know the Waterloo Legion has been sold and they are renovating their new digs as you are reading this. We welcome the Legion members during the transition to the new building. Our picnic will be held at the club in August, check the calendar for the date as well as September Activities, Sports Day will be a a big one since we do not have a sports director as yet, never the less as the information is received it will be posted and sign ups requested. EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT Hi there everyone I hope this finds all of you doing well and enjoying your summer thus far, I don t have too much to say right now so I will keep it brief.i know there have been several changes surrounding the bar lately, in particular the new staff, and returning ones! I thank you for making Barbara and Kim feel welcomed and I m happy they ve joined our team. We don t really have any rentals over the summer so the hall will be quiet that s not to say that we re not looking for business. If you know of anyone who s looking, please let them know we re available. Same goes for businesses..we d be happy to help them out with business meetings and such. Other than that, please have a safe and happy summer. I will see you when I see you. Pomp and Circumstances The Peacekeepers Parade and Ceremonies will occur on Sunday August 9th at Veterans' Green The Parade form-up will be on the green at 12:30 pm. The ceremonies at the cenotaph will commence at 1:00 pm. The Battle of Britain Parade and Ceremonies will occur on Sunday September 20th at the Waterloo Cenotaph. The Parade form-up will be on the green at 1:15 pm. The ceremonies at the cenotaph will commence at 2:00 pm. MASTER-AT-ARMS JOHN COXON SICK AND VISITING Since the last Log things have picked up a bit as the membership wanted me back at work. A couple of members, Gord Douglas and Gord Moore had problems that I was unaware of but I have seen them at the club and also by phone and things are going OK. Gord Moore was having quite a bit of pain lately but will be having Cortizone shots and in the pool for some therapy that should help a lot. The last time I spoke to Gord Douglas things were going OK. Since my trip to Holland in early May, some members have been having health problems. Larry Goodwin been in K. W. Hospital for about a month now. I visited with him several times. Last time (June 14th). They are having him transferred to an extended care facility for therapy. Not sure where at this point, either Freeport or St. Joe's in Guelph. 5
Visited Len Zettler at K. W. and also at Freeport after he had a mini stroke about May 12. Talked to him a while ago and he's visiting his sister in Port Elgin. He's feeling OK and hopes to get to the club in the near future. He will be facing Vascular surgery in the near future. He misses playing Johnny Love on the shuffleboard. I heard that Gord Campbell was having a problem with his medication since he came back from Florida. I spoke to him last week and he says things are getting a bit better but he's having quite a bit of pain. Gord thanks the membership for the Get Well card. He was very pleased with the card and he will keep in touch with the gang from New Hamburg. Another member was having hip replacement surgery at the time that I was leaving for Holland, Germain Fitzgerald. I have heard that everything went well with the operation. I have been unable to contact him to say Hello. I got mixed up when I went to see him as I thought his street was under repair. I drove by his apartment and didn't realize it was on the corner. I sent his Get Well card by mail. I've left messages and waiting for a call back. I called on Jan Miller at the same time that I visited Len at Freeport. She says she's doing OK and taking longer than she thought. I've also called on Bob Jordan, Brian Miller and Vic Straus on a couple of occasions since I came back. Not much change with them although Vic has now been moved to Mississauga. I spoke to his wife and she will be moving there as well in August as they have family there. Brian Miller has been in St. Mary's he though for about a year. I guess they do not have the equipment at Freeport which everyone seems to have though they might. Hope I haven't missed anyone as this looks like another epstle to the Romans, however. So be it. Oh, and by the way, it's good to see Bob Miller again as he was at our June meeting Hope membership has a good and safe summer and keep in mind our shipmates who are on the sick list. SERVICE OFFICER We had a busy few months attending the Poppy Fund meeting and elections at the Army, Navy, Air Force club. I will carry on as Poppy Fund Liaison. I attended our own Executive meeting an indicated that our colour party for the Battle of the Atlantic consisted of Kelly Hoffman and Donna Hertel. Our many thanks to these two young ladies. President Mike Edwards, John Coxon, Kelly Hoffman and I attended the Warspite Sea Cadet annual review at the Waterloo Memorial Complex. The cadets put on a great review with the band doing some tricky maneuvering and the cadets doing a marching drill with no commands. John Coxon presented them with a cheque from the K-W N. A. I also attended the Decoration Day service with Mike and John to lay wreaths. The R. C. L. Branch 50 cadets did a good job of marking the Vets' graves with Canadian flags. Unfortunately it rained through the whole service and took us a while to dry out at Branch. 50 SERVICE OFFICER JACK GOUGH SOCIAL, WAYS AND MEANS Ahoy, shipmates! Welcome to my first Way's and Means report. On behalf of the Ways and Means committee, Karin Beutler, Laurie Weare, Dale Appleton and myself, I would like to thank everyone who comes out on a Saturday afternoon (3:00 pm to 5:00 pm) for increasing our intake. LADIES AUXILIARY PRESIDENT S REPORT Hi Ladies. Please accept my apology for not submitting a report in the last log. No excuses. Thank you to Jim Meyer and Judy Dennis (RCL 530) for their help on Nomination and Election night. Greatly appreciated. The year-end dinner was superb as always. Mel Barrie and crew never disappoint. Thank you from all the ladies. Numbers were down a bit from previous year but good to see some faces that aren't always able to make our general meetings. It was wonderful to have Mary Hebert (Past President) join us at the dinner. As I step down from my position as your President, please know that it has been an honour and a privilege to represent the ladies of the KW Naval Association. Thank you to everyone for all of your support over the years. There have been many challenges but, through dedication and perseverance, we pulled everything together, as a team, the way we always do. Be proud of all the accomplishments this auxiliary has made past, present and future. A complete list of the 2015-2016 Ladies Auxiliary Executive is posted in this log. Please give your support to the new Board of Directors. They will need everyone s help in order to move forward. Congratulations to the Men and Ladies taking posts on the board. There are some new faces and some returning faces on both sides. KWNA picnic is on Sunday August 23. Tickets can be purchased at the bar. See posters for detailed information. If you are in town come on in and see us as we are still open for business. We are still looking for volunteers in the galley for Saturday breakfasts. If you can help out once in a while, please let Eunice know and we can schedule you. Spaghetti nights will not run during July and August, but will resume on Wednesday September 16, 2015. Catering events have been few and far between this term. The functions that we did cater were very well received. This is only possible with the many volunteers that have helped out. Many thanks to Mel Barrie for all his help and support this past term. Always a pleasure to work with you Mel. Thank you, also, to the ladies and men that worked with me as well. Johnny and I may also through in a few numbers to fill in once in a while. With the success of the first two jams there has been a few requests that food be made available so, Ronnie Heibert has volunteered himself to BBQ up some 'burgs and sausages.
