Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Leigh Clark Minister of Music & Youth Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Dear church family and friends, II Chronicles 7:14 is often quoted to prescribe how to fix what is wrong with our country. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. This is often interpreted to lay blame on unbelievers and let Christians off the hook. To whom is this Bible verse addressed? My people, called by my name refers to believers. Our land being healed begins with the believers, the church. There are four conditions: Be humble, pray, seek God s face, and turn from our wicked ways (repent). After these conditions are met: then we will hear from heaven, our sins will be forgiven and God will heal our land. God is saying that when Christians get their own houses in order, He will heal our land. Let start with the first condition. Be humble. What does that look like? Be positive. Consistent negative talk about politicians creates a negative atmosphere which is self-defeating. Pray for our public servants. Contact them, especially our local ones. Instead of complaining, thank them for their service and ask if there is anything you can do to support their work. Consider serving in a local public office. Roll up your sleeves and get involved to make our community a better place. Be a part of the solution. All of this is to say that we can shape our political environment. Let s be the church. Love, Pastor Mike How to Join Wise Baptist Church: Express one of the following to the Pastor during the closing hymn: Transfer of Letter Transfer membership to Wise Baptist Church Baptism Desire to express faith in Christ through baptism Statement of Faith Baptized believer not on a membership roll Watch Care Desire to be connected to our Church family without November 15, 2016 Important Dates OCC Relay Center Nov. 14-21 Kindred Spirits November 15 OCC Shoebox Dedication FLOCK Lock-In Community Thanksgiving Service First Sunday of Advent November 27 Jubilation Ringers @ The Inn December 2 Parents Night Out December 3 Christmas Cantata December 4 Christmas Dinner December 21 Christmas Eve Candlelight Service December 24 Inside Announcements Page 2-3 From Leigh Page 4 BDays/Anniv. Adult II Sunday School Class... Almost eighteen years ago, a new Sunday School class was born at Wise Baptist church. What was then known as Bill Sutherland s Class now called Wise Men and Women had become so large that no room in the old church building could accommodate it. So, a number of couples, most of us with young children, decided to form a new class. We wanted to emulate the warm fellowship of Bill s class and, at the same time, to study scripture in a way that we could apply especially to the challenges of raising young families. We also wanted a place to serve. Carl Curtis, now gone to be with the Lord, convinced me to lead the class with the promise that he would serve as co-teacher. But Carl soon made it clear that he did not feel comfortable teaching and preferred for me to take on that responsibility. I reluctantly agreed, with the provision that I would facilitate discussion rather than proclaim truth from the teacher s chair. I believed then, and I believe now, that none of us has a corner on God s will, and I wanted to allow all of the collective spiritual wisdom of this group to guide us as we grew spiritually. It is an arrangement that has worked, and continues to work, well. The class membership has changed over the years. Only John Ponish, our long-standing social chair, and I remain from the original group, and we are no longer parents of young children. Indeed, John and Karen recently celebrated the marriage of their youngest daughter! What has remained consistent throughout all of those years is the deepseated desire to grow spiritually, together, as well as a strong sense of fellowship. What has grown even stronger is the commitment of the class to Christian service and ministry. Our current class members are among the most active servants at Wise Baptist Church. You will find them participating in virtually every ministry opportunity at the church: the deacon ministry, the music ministry, Operation Christmas Child, and, of course, mission trips, to name only a few. It has been my privilege to minister with this group. If you are seeking a place to study, to serve, to have fellowship, I invite you to join our Sunday School class. ~ Mark Clark Wednesday Night Activities Join us on Wed. nights for a time of fellowship and spiritual renewal! From Leigh November 15 Donnie Bradley What a blessing to call Ron and Vickie Swindall my friends. Not only are they outstanding musicians, they are wonderful people loving, caring, funny, and fun loving who love the Lord. I so enjoyed the opportunity on Sunday morning to sing and play with them for our worship service. I love being a mother and a mom (if you re a woman with children you understand what I mean!). I love being a mom to all young people that s why I do what I do! But, I don t like being a mom from 600+ miles away. The call came in late Thursday night Anna was on her way to the ER. It was excruciating to wait for news. Finally, in the wee hours of the morning, she was released to go home. I didn t know if I needed to start driving or just wait. I fervently prayed for her and her caregivers. Thankfully, everything is ok except for some lingering headaches. Hopefully those will subside quickly. But, the quickening of my heart when my child is hurting doesn t go away as easily. The anxiety and stress build until there is some resolution and even then My prayers are most certainly with John and Kathy Kennedy as they go through this anxious time with their son, Wesley. And with so many others whose children are hurting, injured, sick, or have lost their way. The needs are real and they are great which is why we need a Heavenly Father to love us and to comfort us. We also need our church family for support and encouragement. Please take time to pray for one another; share a hug; make a phone call; send a card. You may be the exact medicine that someone needs today. Please remember to mark your calendar for Sunday, December 4 at 7 pm Let There Be Christmas will be presented by the Sanctuary choir and orchestra. The Jubilation Ringers will perform at The Inn again this year on Friday, December 2. Stay tuned for more details. I am praying for you this week; pray for each other, too.
