The Pastor s Corner Introducing Rev. Minoo W. Kim, Pastor for FUMC Multi-Site Bishop Sharma Lewis has projected the appointment of Rev. Minoo W. Kim to be the pastor for FUMC s Multi-Site project. Minoo is a fourth generation pastor in the Methodist tradition. He is a graduate of McLean High School, received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and completed his Master of Divinity at Duke Divinity School. Currently, Minoo is the Associate Pastor at Church of the Good Shepherd, Dale City. Minoo is also newly married; he and Grace were married in January 2018. Grace currently works in social policy research with education. Minoo will be assembling the launch team and officially be onboard at Fairfax on July 1, 2018. FUMC will have lots of opportunities to meet Minoo and Grace in the months to come. How can you help Minoo and the Multi-Site Mission? Right now, I am assembling a team of Prayer Partners. These Partners covenant to pray for Minoo, Grace and the Multi-Site daily in their own, personal prayer time. Secondly, there will be gatherings for Minoo and Grace to meet with the Prayer Partners to pray as a group. The power of prayer is the greatest asset we can provide Minoo and this mission! Together may we all offer a joyful FUMC welcome to Minoo and Grace! Peace, David Bonney Some of you have asked and we are responding with a modern communication tool to provide texts to your cell phone from Fairfax Church! These brief, simple and effective reminders will be sent to those on our database for which we have cell phone information, beginning in about three weeks. This is another way that FUMC is seeking to reach out to our congregation and the broader community. The open rate for an email is about 20%, but the open rate for a text is 93% with a response rate of 45% within 3 minutes on average; compared with a 6% response rate for emails. If you want to receive these impactful communications, you only need to be sure that we have your cell phone contact. If you prefer not to receive these occasional text messages, please contact the church office (church@ fairfaxumc.org or 703-591-3120) and express your desire. Get ready, we are further preparing to engage and connect! FAIRFAX UMC SUMMER 2018 2

j Congratulations to New Life International United Methodist Church on their successful launch service on April 8. Pictured left to right: Revs. John Obeng, Emmanuel Nkrumah, David Bonney, and Jim Chandler pray a blessing on the NLI Leadership Team. Summer Sunday School Classes for children of all ages begin June 3 at 9:30am. All of our groups are continuing to use the Buzz curriculum. The Preschool and Kindergarten class focus on Triumph, Bible stories about people who wore the armor of God. Kersplash is the theme for Grades 1-3 as the class journeys through the Book of Acts. Grades 4-6 are Outta Here for their study of Exodus! Our youngest children, under the age of two, are in Room 107 with our childcare team supervising as they learn through play. Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk If you would like to be a part of the world singing in perfect harmony, plan to attend the Fairfax Interfaith Friendship Walk on May 6 from 2-5pm. The 3.3 mile walk brings faith communities together to appreciate and experience the mutuality of our faith despite our differences. The Walk visits the site of 10 faith communities in the City of Fairfax. Fairfax Church is the starting point and ending of the Walk. For more information, view http://rumiforum.org/ Fairfax-interfaith-friendship-walk-2018/ or 202-429-1690. Explore your S.H.A.P.E this summer! Did you know that you are uniquely and lovingly created by God to do specific work for God s kingdom? You are! God wants to partner with each and every one of us to accomplish God s work in this world. Everyone is created differently and we must discover our unique S.H.A.P.E. (spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences) for living as true disciples of Christ. Pastor Amy is leading small groups through this six session journey to help you determine your unique S.H.A.P.E. Cost is $11 for S.H.A.P.E.-Finding and Fulfilling Your Unique Purpose for Life by Erik Rees ($11). We will meet every two weeks on Tuesday evenings at 7pm at the parsonage (3572 University Drive) 6/12, 6/26, 7/10, 7/24, 8/7 and 8/21. FAIRFAX UMC SUMMER 2018 3

Staff Celebration and Farewell Fairfax Church celebrates the ministry of Jay Campbell, our Youth Director. At the Virginia Annual Conference in June, he will be commissioned as a Provisional Elder in The United Methodist Church and begins a pastoral appointment on July 1. Jay has served Fairfax Church since August 2015 and we give thanks for his spirit-filled ministry. As Jay begins this new ministry, please hold him in prayer. Confirmation Sunday Be with us to celebrate and welcome our 2018 class of confirmands into the membership of the church on Confirmation Sunday, May 20th, Pentecost, during the 9:30 service. Since January, this group has met together every week to explore the life of the Christian through faith, community, prayer and service. Plan now to be a part of welcoming this incredible group of students and celebrating this important part of their faith journey. Youth Summer Sunday School All 6th-12th graders are invited for youth summer Sunday School beginning June 4th. Each Sunday the group explores a variety of prayer practices and deepens our friendships with one another through games and conversation. A big welcome to students completing 6th grade! Come and bring a friend and meet other young people in our church and community. Youth Summer Mission Trips Throughout the summer, be in prayer for our two youth summer mission trips. Our Junior High students are traveling to the Eastern Shore, VA on June 24-29 to learn about migrant workers and serve diverse populations through children s programming and home repair. The team will be commissioned in worship on Sunday, June 24. Senior High students are serving at the Leech Lake Reservation, MN on July 7-14 to be introduced to the Ojibwe culture through an intentional immersive service experience. Our team will be commissioned on Sunday, July 1 in worship. FAIRFAX UMC SUMMER 2018 4

Light of Hope at FUMC On Sunday, June 3 at 6:00pm, Fairfax Church celebrates the opportunity to support the mission and work of Rising Hope Ministries, an ongoing initiative of the Alexandria and Arlington Districts. The event, sponsored by our Intergenerational Handbell Choir, begins with dinner provided by area restaurants, followed by musical offerings of the Men of Message, Shonna James from Rising Hope, children from the New Life UMC congregation, and our own handbell choir. There is no charge for admission, but reservations may be made throughout the month of May. Check the church website to make your reservations, and mark your calendar now and plan to attend Light of Hope at FUMC on June 3, 2018 at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall Rolling River Rampage! Vacation Bible School 2018 June 25 29 9:00am 12:15pm. Fairfax UMC invites children who have completed a preschool age 3 program through those who have completed 5th grade to experience the ride of a lifetime with God! The adventure includes energizing music, handbells, interactive Bible fun, cool crafts, hands-on mission work, fun games and more. VBS is completely free so register now and invite a friend! You may register online at fairfaxumc.org; the deadline for registration is June 10. Rising 6th grade and older youth and adult helpers are needed. Honduras Mission Team Summer 2018 FUMC is sending a team of 11 people to Honduras in Central America on July 30 through August 4. Our team is in ministry with the Honduras Independent Bilingual School (HIBS). HIBS helps students of poorer families achieve a life of independence in a country known for brutal poverty. Additionally, the FUMC team is taking a group of students and teachers to visit the Mayan Ruins. Please be in prayer for the Honduras Mission Team. Space is available for two more people on this Team. Stay tuned for more Teams in the future as we expand our mission in Honduras. Please contact Rev. Bonney with any questions at dbonney@fairfaumc.org. FAIRFAX UMC SUMMER 2018 5
