University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship August 7, 2016 9:00am 12th Sunday After Pentecost <<INVITED>> Instrumental Prelude: Allemande, Menuet, Polonaise, Bourree from French Suite No. 6 (BWV 817) J. S. Bach Hannah Byun, Principal Organist Call to Worship: Revelation 7:9-10 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! *Opening Hymn #328: God s Holy Ways are Just and True God s holy ways are just and true, his promises are ever new, O praise him, alleluia! Let every heart with praises sing and make this house with voices ring: O praise him, O praise him! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Bring back to mind his grace and love, our needs provided from above; O praise him, alleluia! He kept his word and Jesus came to make a people for his name; O praise him, O praise him! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Tell once again his deeds of old, The story of our mighty God, O praise him, alleluia! For all his glorious works and ways we shall rejoice through endless days; O praise him, O praise him! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Welcome Scripture Reading Psalm 13 (p. 429) 1 How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long must I bear pain in my soul, and have sorrow in my heart all day long? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? 3 Consider and answer me, O Lord my God! Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep the sleep of death, 4 and my enemy will say, "I have prevailed"; my foes will rejoice because I am shaken. 5 But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. 6 I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon
*Hymn #429: Let Your Heart Be Broken Let your heart be broken for a world in need Feed the mouths that hunger, soothe the wounds that bleed; Give the cup of water and the loaf of bread Be the hands of Jesus, serving in his stead. Here on earth applying principles of love Visible expression God still rules above, Living illustration of the Living Word To the minds of all who ve never seen and heard. Blest to be a blessing, privileged to care, Challenged by the need apparent everywhere, Where the world is wanting fill the vacant place, Be the means through which the Lord reveals his grace. Add to your believing deeds that prove it true Knowing Christ as Savior, make him Master too; Follow in his footsteps, go where he has trod, In the world s great trouble risk yourself for God. Let your heart be tender and your vision clear Rouse yourself to action, serve God far and near. Let your heart be broken by another s pain, Share your rich resources give and give again. Text: Lamentations 1 (p. 666) 1 How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. 3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 5 Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. 6 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. 7 Jerusalem remembers, in the days of her affliction and wandering, all the precious things that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the foe, and there was no one to help her, the foe looked on mocking over her downfall. 8 Jerusalem sinned grievously, so she has become a mockery; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans, and turns her face away. 9 Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. "O Lord, look at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!" 10 Enemies have stretched out their hands over all her precious things; she has even seen the nations invade her sanctuary, those whom you forbade to enter your congregation. 11 All her people groan as they search for bread; they trade their treasures for food to revive their strength. Look, O Lord, and see how worthless I have become. 12 Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which was brought upon me, which the Lord inflicted on the day of his fierce anger. 13 From on high he sent fire; it went deep into my bones; he spread a net for my feet; he turned me back; he has left me stunned, faint all day long. 14 My transgressions were bound into a yoke; by his hand they were fastened together; they weigh on my neck, sapping my strength; the Lord handed me over to those whom I cannot withstand. 15 The Lord has rejected all my warriors in the midst of me; he proclaimed a time against me to crush my young men; the Lord has trodden as in a wine press the virgin daughter Judah. 16 For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears; for a comforter is far from me, one to revive my courage; my children are desolate, for the enemy has prevailed. 17 Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her; the Lord has commanded against Jacob that his neighbors should become his foes; Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them. 18 The Lord is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and behold my suffering; my young women and young men have gone into captivity. 19 I called to my lovers but they deceived me; my priests and elders perished in the city while seeking food to revive their strength. 20 See, O Lord, how distressed I am; my stomach churns, my heart is wrung within me, because I have been very rebellious. In the street the sword bereaves; in the house it is like death. 21 They heard how I was groaning, with no one to comfort me. All my enemies heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. Bring on the day you have announced, and let them be as I am. 22 Let all their evil doing come before you; and deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions; for my groans are many and my heart is faint.
*Hymn of Response #226: Hallelujah! What a Savior Man of Sorrows, what a name For the Son of God who came Ruined sinners to reclaim! Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned he stood; Sealed my pardon with his blood; Guilty, vile, and helpless, we, Spotless Lamb of God was he; Full redemption can it be? Lifted up was he to die, It is finished! was his cry; Now in heaven exalted high; When he comes, our glorious King, To his kingdom us to bring, Then anew this song we ll sing <<SENT>> Prayers of the People & the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. *Closing Hymn #552: My Faith Looks Up To Thee My faith looks up to thee, thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine! Now hear me while I pray, take all my guilt away; O let me from this day be wholly thine! May thy rich grace impart strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire; As thou hast died for me, O may my love to thee Pure, warm and changeless be, a living fire! While life s dark maze I tread, and griefs around me spread,
Be thou my guide; Bid darkness turn to day, wipe sorrow s tears away, Nor let me ever stray from thee aside. When ends life s transient dream, when death s cold, sullen stream Shall o er me roll; Blest Savior, then, in love, fear and distrust remove; O bear me safe above, a ransomed soul! *Benediction Instrumental Postlude: Praludium in C (Bux WV137) D. CURRENT SERMON SERIES MANY VOICES: A Borderless Gospel Borders and boundaries provide a sense of place, distinctiveness, definition, and sometimes a healthy sense of security. But they can also define spaces of complacency and comfort or become barriers that divide, separate, and create obstacles to the full life into which Jesus invites us. This summer, special guests from diverse places around the country and the world will serve as our preachers. We ve given them a great question to frame their messages: From where you are in the Kingdom, what do you sense the Spirit saying to the Church for this time? It is a challenging question that will engage a gospel that transcends boundaries and invites us to follow Jesus into the great adventure of Kingdom life.
Families with young children are always welcome to worship together in the Sanctuary. The service is also played on closed-circuit TV in Knox Parlor, just outside the Sanctuary, which is available for parents and children, if desired.
