Holy Week March 29, 2018 Vol. 120, No. 14 Maundy Thursday Maundy Thursday A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 13.34 Gathering of the Community This is the day that Christ the Lamb of God gave himself into the hands of those who would slay him. This is the day that Christ gathered with his disciples in the upper room. This is the day that Christ took a towel and washed the disciples feet, giving us an example that we should do to others as he has done to us. This is the day that Christ our God gave us this holy feast, that we who eat this bread and drink this cup may here proclaim his Holy Sacrifice and be partakers of his resurrection, and at the last day may reign with him in heaven. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word The First Reading.Linda S. Ex 12:1 4 A reading from the book of Exodus: The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. 11 14 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the Passover of the Lord. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance. Reader Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. (Rev 2:7) Thanks be to God. The Psalm 116: 1, 10 17 I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, * because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him. Peter Barkway Charlie Osborne, Karen Davison Wood Gradual Hymn: 50 Now, My Tongue, the Mystery Telling The Gospel Reading (Mark 14 12-26) The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover? And He sent two of His disciples and said to them, Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him; and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, The Teacher says, Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples? And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; prepare for us there. The disciples went out and came to the city, and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. When it was evening He came with the twelve. As they were reclining at the table and eating, 3
Maundy Thursday Vol. 120, No. 14 March 29, 2018 Holy Week Jesus said, Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me one who is eating with Me. They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, Surely not I? And He said to them, It is one of the twelve, one who dips with Me in the bowl. For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born. While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, Take it; this is My body. And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
