Saint Michael the Archangel Parish Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2016 Rev. Fr. Dale A. Branson TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy it; you may even find yourselves fighting against God. Chrisans followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family seng. Bishops wanted people to be good cizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government's role in marriage. In general, they expected Chrisans to know that marriage was good, that marriage to other Chrisans was best, and to take it easy on the wild wedding pares. They agreed that marriage was a divine instuon, that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Sll, even when Chrisanity became the official religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family maer. On wedding days people gathered in the bride's house, where the father would "give her hand" to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride's new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely oponal, but had a "photo-op" feel to it that was widely emulated. Before long, at least in the East, it looked as if the priest were joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Due to conflict in the Middle East, the tourism has been cut off. In order to survive, they have turned to Chrisan communies in the United States to purchase their arcles. These beauful religious arcles are hand carved from wood of the sacred Olive tree. This workmanship has been tradional for these families for hundreds of years. It is hoped that through the efforts of Mr. Khair that these families will receive income and will be able to stay living in the Holy Land. Amazingly enough, the Chrisan populaon dropped from 22 % to less than 2% in the last 30 years. Thank you in advance for your support. The Great Hymn to Love It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to write what we now know as the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians, knew that he was penning what was to become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this brief passage, he set down ideals about love that have held fast through the centuries. Sometimes we may think that because these are ideals to which we aspire, we are excused from them in our daily living. But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends, providing them with some sound advice about what it meant--and still means--to live in love, day by day, as a follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God and neighbor. Today we hear what this love must look like in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our relationships with others. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Boundless Mercy Received, Now Given Our beloved Pope Francis has declared this the Year of Mercy. Mercy is at the heart of his ministry. Issue 1 He reminds us that as we have received God s boundless mercy, we now have a responsibility to show that mercy, care and concern to others. Mercy means having eyes that see where love is needed, ears that hear the cry of others and a heart that responds to those in need. By sharing mercy through your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal, you feed the hungry, clothe the needy, strengthen parishes throughout our diocese, provide funding for Catholic Community Services, support social outreach programs, and bring the presence of Christ to hospitals, colleges and prisons, while providing for retired priests and educating and training future priests. You also provide grant assistance for Catholic charities, ministries, religious and education programs within our diocese. May the virtue of mercy open the way as you consider being an essential part of the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. Thank you. RECEIVED, NOW GIVEN. MERCY MERCY BOUNDLESS For additional information about the Annual Catholic Appeal, visit the Catholic Foundation website at: www.cathfnd.org/annualcatholicappeal 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Tucson 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal
Gracias. RECIBIDA Y AHORA COMPARTIDA.
