BIKE RAFFLE REPORT As we stand we have only 58 books of 150 left to sign out and that is a great thing and we really appreciate everybody getting involved a little earlier in the year compared to last. We just showed the bike at the Hog Bike Show in the Civic Center this weekend and everything went very well. Clay, Kim, Geoff, Phil, and Tina showed up for set up and tear down and quickly helped us get up and running and home at the end. That was very much appreciated especially since Mary and I had personally entered a bike we're rebuilding for our pal Red from Louisiana. Thank you to all the people who signed up to sell tickets and for your professionalism and being on time. The weekend final tally for ticket sales was just over 40. We also signed up 3 new members that I know of. I was a bit disappointed that the show was moved into the big arena, I don't think that room offered the class of years past and as you looked around the bikes and all the chrome just died and disappeared into the concrete floors and walls and just didn't look good. Our vendor space was cramped compared to years past and very dark which we can fix that in the future if it's held there again. Once again you can contact us at 393-1221 to check out and return books. Thanks B.A. & Mary Vice President s Report NO REPORT AT TIME OF PUBLICATION THE NAKED WINERY Hill City, SD 1200 E. CHAPLAIN S CORNER As motorcyclists, we understand that choosing the way is very important when planning a ride. Do we want to "slab it" and get to our destination as fast as possible; or, do we want a leisurely ride through the countryside during which we can unwind, feel the wind, smell the roses (and the skunks) and relax? The choice of the way is ours. The reality about choosing the way is that we, as bikers, must plan fuel stops, rest stops and ride observantly, defensively and safely. We need all our senses on high alert in order to have a safe, enjoyable ride and return home to our loved ones. But, there is another way - God's way. Prov.16:25 "There is a way that seems right to a man, but it's end is the way of death." Matt. 7: 13-14 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." We often hear people explain away God's wishes for their behavior, the way He would have them go, because their way is better than His. The truth is motorcycling is a large part of our lives. It gives us a sense of freedom, peace and joy! We have fellowship with each other, understanding, and a sense of being family. But, there is another truth - God's truth. John 8:32 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."col. 1:5 "because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel." 2 Tim. 2:96 "if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth." 1 John 3:19 "And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him." The life is what we, as motorcyclists/ bikers, live for - freedom of the road, wind in our hair, smells, sounds of our bikes running smoothly, etc. Work, chores and obligations are just "things" we have to do in order to do what we love to do. We love to share the life with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts. Good weather, a great way (road), and friends make the life. But, there is a life which is from God. SIDEHACK SALOON Lazelle Street, Sturgis SD Live bands every night during the rally! Valley Sports Bar 1865 S. Valley Drive, Rapid City Luke 12:23 "Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing." John 6:63 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." James 4:14 "whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow, for what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away." 1 John 5:11 "And this is the testimony; that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son." So, here we have both the "Bikers" way, truth and life; and, we have God's way, truth, and life. Put your trust in God's plan first - John 14:6 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Follow God's plan in all things - not just in motorcycling- and your way, your truth, and your life will work much more smoothly. Try it - forever! In His Service. Sunshine & Auggie

CAPUTA GENERAL STORE E. Hwy 44, Caputa SD 393-2660 DAKTECH 1141 Rand Rd. Rapid City SD 721-6865 ROAD CAPTAIN S REPORT NO REPORT AT THE TIME OF PUBLICATION

HEARTLAND S.T.E.A.M. REPORT On March 23-25 I went to Heartland Steam in Omaha, NE. I will submit some reports on the various "break-out" sessions I attended. Two of these reports are fairly short so I will combine them in one report. General Session on Sat. am : There is an Industry Council and MRF is helping to give them a voice in D.C. Right now they are focused on ethanol issues. HR 904 addresses the check point issue - they are not wanted in SD. Sen. Thune has already signed on as a sponsor but we are asked to call Rep. Noem and ask her to sign on as soon as possible. Speaking of our Sen. Thune and Rep. Noem, they are considered "Steam State Superstars" (supporters) and we should all contact them by letter, phone or e-mail to thank them for all the support they give MRF and motorcycling issues in Congress! Highway Bill - The House has a five year bill costing $260M to be paid for inn 10 years. It is going nowhere. The Senate has a 2 year bill for $160M but it will be stopped due to an election year. Neither bill includes a helmet law provision. There is no 2010 money but check points (in states that have them) are still funded. NHTSA is unfettered now and can do whatever they want with their funds. HR 3199 - The ethanol bill is on hold for more studies with MRF blessings. NTSB has changed it's position from one of mandatory helmets to one of education, awareness and voluntary helmet use! This is a BIG attitude change! Only 15% of riders come from the "Steam" states and MRF can always count on them for financial support. For special projects, requiring money over and above the usual support, our states have been known to give 30% that MRF knows they can count on and have been known to give as much as 55% financial support on some occasions. Way to go! We may not be large in population but we are generous! It is important for us all to get more members in our ABATE chapters and get our members to join MRF if we want to continue to ride free - or even ride at all! JOIN NOW! Leadership "break-out" Session Sat pm: This was timely since many ABATE chapters and our state BOD are preparing for elections. The moderator recommended that a person know what they are getting into when desirous of running for office. It is recommended that written job descriptions be available for all offices in the organization. it is also advised that a person know State and Federal laws pertaining to the position and know your organizations by-laws and/or any other manuals. While holding an office, be looking for your replacement. Have goals, be positive, be enthusiastic! A leader needs to have fire and passion for the organization and it's goals. It is important to ask members for input so that they feel involved. Give reports that people understand - keep them as brief as possible. Know Robert's Rules of Order, or at least have a copy on hand if a question arises - it is the bottom line. Prepare, prepare, prepare! Have a goal and use a timeline. Have a project and delegate some duties (getting others involved) and observe how they handle the responsibility. There are some topics available : How to Lead Leadership principles How to Think Like a Leader The Lessons or Secrets of Attila These may be requested from the presenter: Jim "Legs" Korte He also recommends another one titled: What Successful People Do. This paper is by Slider Gilmore and Legs didn't know if he had permission to give it out to others. He may know by the time he hears from you and he highly recommends this paper.
